Thurston trail is at the end of a sleepy little road with decent parking. Unassuming trail that starts off easy then quickly gets rocky and arduous pretty quickly. Get ready to sweat quickly before you get to a higher lever plateau. Roughly 1-2 hour hike to Annapolis rocks depending on if you’re breaking or not. Beautiful right now.
Love this hike. The first part is beautiful, and flat. The climb is very steep with lots of loose rocks. But once you get to the top, its a nice hike to the views at black rock or Annapolis Rock.
Great hike. There are a lot of trails that intersect so make sure you have a picture of the map. Its quite uphill for awhile there, just keep going! Its beautiful & 100% worth the struggle. You have to cross the creek 3-4 times keep that in mind while picking shoes. I loved my time here, Il be coming back.
Really cool hike up the mountain. Its a bit rocky and a little steep in places. My kids loved it (youngest 7).You may have some difficulty if youre not used to hiking. The only restroom is an old dilapidated outhouse, so ladies go before you head up. The view at the top is amazing, if it a clear day. Still good if not.
Uphill climb, most the way. (At least 900 elevation) but once up top, the view over the plains, is amazing and beathtaking!! About an intermediate trail, so have your legs ready!
Good hike-follow workout with around 50 minutes of decent climbing-but pretty views await!
Good hike with a fair bit of elevation change.
Difficult trail, but worth the view at the end. Take the time to continue on to Annapolis Rock. Its a flat mile walk.
Great trail, very rocky but fun. Has a great outlook at the end. Just dont go when its foggy like we did.
Absolutely loved this hike. Only made 2 miles..out of shape, but going again. So worth the rocks and steep climb! Loved the beauty, serenity sounds of the water, birds chirping, saw an Eagle, deer, squirrels. Epic place to hike.
Great back way to get to blackrock. A bit steep in some spots, until you get to the AT trail. Less people than the trail from 40. So, I probably shouldnt tell the world...
Love this section of our local heaven.
Easy hike with an awesome view
Our Pathfinder group hiked up to black rock. It would be nice if there was a sign telling you the distance at the beginning of the trail. It took a good while to get there and come back. It is a very challenging trail. Lots of rocks and tree limbs to go over snd around. Watch your step. A few of us older folks werent as fast as the younger ones.We had a great time.
Very peaceful place
A short cut to Black Rock and Annapolis Rock I believe, it seemed to me anyway, A nice spring on it I known in fall you will have great views!
Great hike. Its rough in some spots but worth it when you get to the top!
A great workout trail. 900 elevation gain up to Black Rock. Pass POGO campground on AT. Trailhead off Crystal Falls Rd at White oak Rd. You will cross two creeks.
Saw this little fella on the way to the shelter great hike even with the rain!
Favorite place for a hike
GORGEOUS HIKING TRAIL! deff for seasoned hikers only, its very rocky and steep.
Easy walk. Ready access. Great viewer from lookout
Love the view...plenty of space to free roam through woods and trails
Absolutely gorgeous!
Great trail to go hiking. Not too difficult, but will be a challenge for some.
The trail head isnt clearly defined, and you also have to cross a lot of creeks. Overall it is a decent home, but it could use better labeling. I would also advise anyway to wear water proof shoes, and maybe boots as this is a very Rocky trail.
Wasnt too crowded when I went, it was a good moderate level hike with some cool views at the top.
This is a great hiking trail. Lots of fun. Lots of rocks, you will need to go over logs and rocks to cross a stream a couple of times.
Its quiet, no trash and nice hiking area
Great access trail to the AT/Pogo primitive campsite. You have .9 mile to the AT and campsite. Another .5 mile to Black Rock( a fabulouse overlook. And another 1 mile will give you the views of Annopolis rock.
Great trail! Beautiful views with a creek running near the trail. Big elevation climb.
My favorite local trail. I go at least once a month.
Great hike with the reward of a beautiful view of the valley. We took our two kids (8 and 10) and they loved it! Several stream crossings, challenging rocky trails kept them wondering what was around the next corner.
Definitely will be back in the fall. Its a tough hike with snow and ice even with microspikes.
Gorgeous hike, but pretty steep. About a mile to the Appalachian trail
Love this trail been several times! My kids love it! Beautiful, peaceful view!
Pretty intense (with a full pack) walk up to the AT in Maryland. I got my heartbeat right up there in that mile.
Nice scenic trail, can be muddy, wear boots!
I absolutely love this hike. Its beautiful.
First real hike of my life. Was very beautiful. The view at the top was amazing.
Saw two rattle snakes! Be careful
Great work out leading to the AT.
This trail is 3.4 miles out and back, and leads to the Black Rock Cliff. Spectacular view of the countryside. A couple of streams are in this trail. Mostly inclines in this trail but worth it. Ive hiked this trail twice, and I would love to hike it again.
It was a beautiful hike. A decent climb most of the way up about a mile to intersect with the Appalachian Trail. The view from Black Rock over Washington county is a great reward.
Nice trail .. up to the Appalachian trail
View is worth the rocky, uphill climb to Black Rock along a stream through the forest.
Very enjoyable trail but you need good boots when it has rained alot as it is quite wet.
Nice hike thats nearby
Tough trail due to incline, however it is beautiful.
I saw a dead millipede
Beautiful trail. My wife and I took our dogs as well and they loved it. Stunning overlook after a moderate to advanced hike.
Beautiful and peaceful trail. Fairly Rocky and uneven, and can be we at the spring crossings. Just wear adequate footwear, and dont let the terrain deter you. It is a gem.
Great trail but the back window of our jeep was smashed when we were hiking and a lot of stuff was stolen. Be safe
This trail connects to Appalachian trail. Amazing views. It is free and can be a fun way to enjoy the natural resources. My favorite hiking trail
Good trail, mostly an uphill climb
Beautiful
Awesome trail, pretty rocky and steep in some places so perhaps not ideal for small children or those with joint problems
This is a great easy to access spot on the Appellation Trail. It is a medium level trail with a mild incline to start out.
Great lookout at the black Rock. Moderate difficulty and only a few miles, I recommend it to anyone.
Beautiful trail that intersects with the Appalachian trail and leads to a gorgeous overlook of the valley. A steep hike and very rocky, but doable if the weather is dry.
A connector trail to the Appalachian trail.
I love this trail! Moderate difficulty, great scenery
Beautiful trail. Loved the area!
So beautiful
Beautiful hike
Amazing trail
Awesome trail,,,
Fun hike
Good ascent and workout up to the AT
Intense initial vertical gain
Really nice!!
My favorite trail in the area!

Great up hike.
