September 2020— Enchanted Rock advises me to go here when my reservation wasn’t found. If you are not in the area and aren’t going that way, you may not find it worth your whole. It does not compare to enchanted rock trails. There is one short trail. Beautiful views but it’s not going to be a day in nature. More like an hour or two. There is a beautiful trail and view. They have tours but not when I was there. I also think pets may not be permitted but I’m unsure.

It was a nice little drive through the countryside. The staff were very courteous and informative. They put safety first, including asking if we were comfortable with the guide having his mask off outside while standing several feet away.Of course seeing the bats leaving the tunnel was the best part. They put on a beautiful show.

Small park with a short hike and an interesting local history. Great for spending an hour or so outside after breakfast, lunch or before dinner. Kid friendly hike as long as they are steady on their feet. Would recommend for a short outing. Unfortunately werent here at the right time of year to see the bats exiting the tunnel.

Hidden gem. The state park is free and is very well maintained. They have information on the history and nature of the place. Its a short trail, you can go through it relatively quickly. There were many bats you could see inside the tunnel and they have bat watching events later on the day when they come out.Beautiful view.

Even though we couldnt get reservations for the bat viewing (severely limited due to Covid), it was a lovely way to spend a few hours during the afternoon. Its a tiny park and unstaffed, but has some nice shaded trails. Looking through the tunnel we could see some bats flying around, evening in the middle of the day.

We went during the day to check out the tunnel. It was a bit on the stinky side, but pretty neat to look at. The overlook was pretty even for winter time. The stairs are on the steep wide side, but it was still a nice walk and another way to enjoy the outdoors.

Got to see the Mexican bats fly out. The state park ranger told us that they usually fly away from where we were, but a gust of wind came in right before they started flying out, and they were flying really close to us. It was a great time spent.

Trails to walk down along the railroad. Pretty steep descent. Once at the bottom, there is a bridge where you can look through the 923 foot tunnel from about 50 yards away and see a few bats flitting between the tunnel walls. Trail closes at 5 pm, after which you must have an online reservation to be in the viewing area for the evening emergence of the bats.

A good, free state park if you are passing through or staying close by. As of June 2020 there is some construction going on in the parking lot but everything is still accessible. It is a great place to get out, walk around, and get some fresh air. They have a wonderful nature trail down a hill with some information on local plants and birds to look for. It is not a hard walk at all. But make sure you have water in the summer. There is also a garden and some picnic benches at the entrance. There are multiple areas where bar watching is available for a fee. We did not come for the bat emergence as we came during the day time. If you call the number for the park you will get an automated message with information on bar emergence time and cost.

Went for a discovery drive down 290 wonderin a bit about this bat cave. Already knew tickets for the whole weekend were sold out, but wanted to see what the area had in store. Found a beautiful hike along the trails in the park. Free to do that and oh, how beautiful it is! Got quite the workout as it turns out and how we needed it. Not crowded at all and the few people who were there were indeed glad to see other people. Will definitely come back to view the bats at night in the near future.More to follow...

Went with my family to watch the bats emerge from the old train tunnel. It did not disappoint! The bats were coming out early because the juveniles were ready to fly which was increasing competition for bugs. They started around 7:45.If you go, make sure you pre-register. They have no means of registration at the state park.

Great tiny State park. If you go before 5 pm you can walk down the trail past the old railroad tunnel. Pay the $5 per person, cash, exact change and treat yourself to the lower viewing area where a park ranger gives a fascinating talk about the Mexican Freetail Bats. (No small children under 3 allowed in lower viewing area) Viewing times change call the park to free number for updates. Bats in residence approximately late April through October.Take your own water, wear sneakers or hiking boots. We saw 3 million bats last night!

Our family had a great time at Old Tunnel State Park! The volunteer at the upper viewing entrance was a little stiff, but efficient. The volunteer at the lower viewing area was friendly, animated, and knowledgeable! It was a nice cool breezy evening and the bat emergence was spectacular! A few bats flew in our direction adding to the excitement! We arrived closer to dark. It would be worthwhile to arrive earlier and explore the park a bit. It’s a bit of a country drive from San Antonio. Take your time and plan accordingly especially when driving home in the dark! Bring water and snacks, as amenities are limited, if available at all. We didn’t encounter any mosquitos, but it would wise to bring repellant with you just in case. The only bathrooms were portable toilets. We enjoyed our visit and plan to return again!

This is a really cool place to go check out. The drive there is neat in itself because youre driving on roads that wind up in the hills. We saw wild deer all over the place just grazing near the roads. The actual park is beautiful. Great view of everything. Its 5 bucks to go down near the tunnel, to see the bats. We didnt get to see them come out but it was okay, the views and trails were worth the drive anyway.

The trail was a little hard to find, and I know it wasnt just me because I explained where it was to several people after I found it (if youre looking out at the scenery over the seating, its to your right). It’s really good for such a small park. I must say, that the cave is really awesome, but the tour guide just makes it so much better. There are a lot of state parks in Texas, though, and I wouldn’t say that this one is worth to go out if your way for (if you’re a local you usually goes to state parks, however, this is a good choice).
