It’s a bridge and you cross it. No no times are 6 am and 2:30 to 7 pm. toll is $6 from Hayward to San Mateo and nothing going back to Hayward. It’s also spooky sometimes.

I hate this bridge it is the scariest bridge ever. It goes really really high up and it’s very scary when there is Highlands also there is a lower part that extends a lot of miles and I’m sure cars have flipped over and went into the ocean I just dislike this bridge there’s always traffic!

As far as bridges go, this one isnt as pretty or famous as the Golden Gate; but serves us well by providing the necessary connection from the Peninsula to Hayward (among many other cities) the self proclaimed Heart of the Bay (more like an armpit to me)... I like the causeway portion of the bridge. No, I like my car radio, yeah, I get to listen to my 80s tunes on the straightaway. Oh, also, if theres an accident and a lane or twos blocked, that really sucks. Bring a book to read.

Yesterday, April 30, shortly before 8:00 pm, it is time to no longer go out, my car broke down on the San Mateo bridge and I could no longer pick it up and today in the morning I went to get it up but the highway patrolman was already towing it now I call to grab it and they want to steal $ 500 ... now I understand the angry and vandalizing people deserve it I hope they end all the bad officials

If you hate this bridge and the costs of it. Vote conservative. Dont write a review. CA/SF is an one party state and needs fiscal responsibility. Anyway, Im looking for reviews on cop traffic stops here...Great bridge btw, it stands up.

Nice bridge in scenic point of view. This is on my daily commute route and this bridge is a bottle neck. With any kind of actual accident expect delays, sometimes by long stretch of time hence the 3 star rating.

The toll price was $5. I have the worker a $20 bill and he gave me $10 in return. They need someone to supervise what’s going on. It’s not the first time it’s happened.

Review №44

There’s nothing remarkable about this bridge. But to be fair that’s because it’s overshadowed by the Golden Gate Bridge and the Bay Bridge—can’t really shine with that company. This bridge is long enough that it will give you some time to admire the views of the bay.

I enjoy driving over the San Mateo bridge. I like to see the water, maybe see a seal, lots of birds. Use it mostly to go to SFO.

Er
Review №46

As I climbed slowly up the menacing dark road leading to my ultimate fate on the bridge, I stared into the abiss. To my left I saw a glimpse the city and to my right..the spider that was stuck on my passenger seat. It took all of my will power to not steer the car off the bridge into the murky water bellow. Over all the bridge was fine.

Functional but not beautiful as the Golden Gate Bridge. I post two pictures here of the remains of the bridge it replaced, located on the West side. The old bridge is not accessible to the public. There is the bay trail (paved) that goes under the newer bridge where you can hear the rumble of the passing cars and see the underside of the old bridge and its replacement.

Getting around the San Francisco Bay requires us to use one or more bridges periodically. All bridges crossing the bay have an intrinsic beauty but the San Mateo–Hayward Bridge allows drivers to see a lot of the bay from various directions because of its bend and length.

Its a bridge. You drive over water on it. It works. Sometimes there is a lot of traffic. Most of the way you are not very high above the water but there is a high rise section so that boats can go under. The views are ok. It feels more like a freeway than a bridge.

As humans, we tend to go where other humans have ventured, and as tourists, thats no exception. The Golden Gate and the new Bay Bridge has drawn a lot of attention over the years. The Golden Gate, because of its iconic symbol to the Bay Area. The bridge also the dubious distinction of being one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World. The Guinness World Records has crowned the new East Span the widest bridge, with a total deck width of 258.33 feet, including 10 lanes of roadway, a 15.5-ft-wide bike path and a gap where the central tower supports the two bridge deck sections. Now with that being said and with all the tourists flocking to see these bridges, another not so well known bridge is the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge which goes unnoticed. This bridge served as a lifeline during the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake when the old Bay Bridge went down for months because of structural repairs. This bridge is a lifeline for many commuters who travel into Silicone Cone Valley of Santa Clara. Ive commuted over this bridge thousands of time over the years and the views are spectacular on any day. Traveling up and over the 135 foot span also gives you a great bird eye view of the entire Bay Area. Although this bridge has remained in the shadows, the past is rich.* Did you know, that the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge is the longest bridge in the San Francisco Bay Area and the 25th longest in the world by length!?Early 1920s, the idea for a bridge between Hayward and Little Coyote Point in San Mateo began formulating. Three Cities, San Mateo, Hillsborough, and Burlingame campaigned for a transportation link from the Dublin Valley. In 1927, construction began with more than 12 tons of structural and reinforcing steel much of it forged at the old United States Steel plant in South San Francisco. The cement came from Redwood City, mixed with remnants of ancient oyster shells provided the foundation for the roadway.Only one person lost his life during construction of the bridge: J.R. Janson, a field engineer, who fell 57ft onto a concrete pile.In 1929, on opening day, the bridge was originally known as the San Francisco Bay Toll Bridge. A huge celebration commenced in San Mateo with dignitaries from both sides of the bay.Initial bridge tolls ranged from twenty cents for a motorcycle, to fifty cents for a seven-passenger automobile. The new San Francisco Bay Toll Bridge quickly gained acclaim as a rousing engineering success.* Publicized as the largest bridge in the world, it cut travel time from the Central Valley to San Francisco considerably, lowering prices for agricultural products on the Peninsula, while helping to stimulate local development. However, because of the Great Depression, the Bridge Company lost more than $230,000 the first year as ridership decreased. In turn, they dropped the toll costs to lure motorists. The central draw section of the bridge soon proved impractical for the heavy commuter population. Although the center section took only four minutes to rise, mechanical and nautical delays could easily stop traffic for more than an hour.In 1961, construction of a new San Mateo-Hayward Bridge began and would be a seven-mile steel roadway deck as part of the structure, without the need of a separate concrete deck.* The high-rise portion would include a 750-foot steel girder span, which would become the longest girder span in United States. The high-rise would tower 135 feet above the bay, allowing ships to easily pass below in a dredged channel. The new bridge would have four traffic lanes on the eastern trestle portion and six on the high-rise section. In 1967, the new bridge opened and was sleek with a majestic structure which won accolades from critics, including the American Society of Engineers and American Institute of Steel Construction. So there you have it... Take a ride over this great bridge and enjoy the view!
