Weve been going to the Fort Worth Nature Center & Refuge for over 30 years. We decided to join as members two years ago and since then we try to walk the trails at least three days a week. At least once a week we will see something new or different. Being in our 60s we arent really up to the more strenuous trails but have several favorites. Each trail seems to differ in several ways. Our favorite trail has more wildlife than others. We consistently see about ten white tailed deer on the trail. Recently we watched as four waded across the Trinity River for the first time. The river is the headwaters to Lake Worth. This fall weve enjoyed the colors of the leaves and were suprised that a State Park an hours drive away had less colorful leaves and didnt see any deer or other animals other than a few birds.Covid-19 has restricted the guided activities and the educational center has been closed but it is still a wonder place to spend time enjoying nature.
This is a very large outdoor facility. Why are you limiting admission??? Stop it. I swear there is no common sense involved in the COVID restrictions. My family sure was wanting to get outside and do some hiking and see the animals today, but I guess we’ll just have to go do something indoors instead. Morons.
Absolutely worth the hour+ drive to get away from Mesquite to hike and explore the peaceful beauty of this wonderful park on a beautiful day! I got there a little after 2pm and had a good 2 and-a-half hours to explore. So I first started off with the legendary Greer Island; it felt like entering a haunted house after seeing an account of the Lake Worth monster on the news a year ago - which was how I first learned about this park overall. As I continued on through the island, I kept my eyes open and kept looking over my shoulder - but hey, fact or fiction, it was worth the thrill. It has excellent trails to walk through and nice areas to view the scenery of the lake. Then I moved up a little northwest to where before the lake merges into the westfork trinity river and hung out on the riverbank and saw some deer. But however, I Love this place! Still there is more to see and I will definitely return!
I spent some time on the parts of the Margaret Parker Memorial Trail that were accessible. I also went more than 1.25 miles into the Canyon Ridge trail from the parking lot entrance at the end of Shoreline Dr. I would like to return many times and am hoping that waters will significantly recede this summer, so that the closed trails can end and others can be passed through completely. If youre interested in the Canyon Ridge trail, prepare for many changes in elevation. This trail is excellent for exercise whether you are walking or running it. There are wooden bridges in the trail, but the creeks were dry. Id be interested in walking the Canyon Ridge trail at its best.
Prepayment Required! Arrived to be turned away... Required each individual to do an online Registration and Pre Payment: Create an account, each person, with the city of forth worth website, await account activation emails, pick day you want to go, it defaults to the next hour, paid, Called to have admission altered to not wait till the next hour. This entire process Took 30 minutes... After driving all the way there they will Not take payment at the gate...wish this had been at the Top of their website which I pulled up the hours before leaving the house. The park is LOVELY as always, been coming for almost 40 years, and now that we know entrance process we will Be Prepared when we return to enjoy the beauty that is nature.
This was such a nice place to get out side. Great, flat hikes easy for kids. Bathrooms were clean, picnic tables for lunch. It was a great day.
Great place to get away from it all and unwind. Walk the trails and enjoy nature. Busy but still quite for a stroll at the weekend. But for me best time is in the week alot quieter. If your quite youll find deer everywhere. Good amount of birds and waterfowl to in the winter. So glad i found this place.
First time going there for a hike with my bf, im pretty out of shape but wouldnt say its a very hard trail. The views you can get are amazing. Would definitely recommend.
Great natural area on the outskirts of Fort Worth. Be very aware near the water lines as we saw 3 alligators. 1 huge, 1 about 6 feet long, and one younger gator about 2-3 feet long. We saw deer, armadillo, snakes, and tons of spiders. Trails are very well marked and maintained. There are miles and miles of trails for all skill levels and ages. Go during the week if you want to enjoy the silence of nature and want to take your time enjoying all the sights. Also, during the weekdays you are more likely to see wildlife. Be careful in the grassland areas as the recent rains have created thick tall grass and you will not see the snakes until you are directly on them.
Nice trials lots of wildlife and forest trees...
Awesome spot! Had no idea it was there. A friend took me hiking out there and its great. Off of lake worth. Lots of wild life!
This is a must see attraction if you are in FT. Worth TX.Wildlife abounds. Awesome real WILD bison. Alligators if you look close. Flora is everywhere and some of the loudest bugs I have ever heard.I am UPDATING this... the name of the gate attendant that day was Darlene Moulton. She was a very nice woman and extremely knowledgeable about the park. Took the time to explain certain aspects that were worth checking out further...like the architecture...old stone pillared culvertss that drained under the access roads...very cool!Admission is $5 a car with up to 4 people.Watch out for speeding cars on the many roads...seems to be an issue as I talked to most. All in all it is a great time!
Great place for hiking trails. Lots of elevation changes. I love that place.
Great place to enjoy the great outdoors.
The Nature Center needs to update their reservation system. Should be able to use 1 reservation for multiple people. We made a reservation for 8oclock but when we had to make a second account for the 2nd person there were no more available at that time.
Great place for family weekend. Well maintained trails and parking lot. We stayed there for the whole afternoon and everybody enjoy it.
Looked this place up multiple times, said no need for reservations Monday thru Friday and its Friday....after driving 45 minutes get their only to find out you have to leave the property to make an account to put money on just for 8 dollars....which takes another 30 minutes... ridiculous wont be coming back....you can hand me papers but not take my cash.......
One of my favorite places to hike and take people to visit. Never know what animal youll catch sight of, still hoping to see a bobcat (: Lots of trails to hike, kayaking, and events hosted by the center throughout the year. Have yet to have a bad experience with staff who has been super friendly.
Wow, I can not believe I have not been out here before. We feed the bison and took a trail. I really enjoyed it because you feel like you are out of the city surrounded by nature, and you are. 5 dollar admission at the gate. Really great place to hike. We only took a smaller hike. Their looked to be a lot more to explore.
Great park not far from down town fort worth. A lot of trails suitable for kids, kayaks ramp, bison seen. Deers running around while you hike
Great hiking trails and lots of wildlife. Greer Island and the scenic overlook behind the visitors center are a must-see! Cant wait to come explore some more! Hiking across a 180M year old clam bed was pretty awesome too! There could have been more watering stations but not a big issue.
Pretty place. Didnt see bison but I like the trails
I came here to seek refuge but they said no. I confused because I am giraffe who need refuge. So i eat them
Not just a great place to get in touch with nature but to get in touch with local myth. In the late 60s & early 70s it was the haunt of a Big Foot like creature known as THE LAKE WORTH Monster
Beautiful walls and so very clean! A trash can would be helpful, anywhere :) We had many great trails to walk and explore and even were able to see 2 Bison, though at a distance.
I love this park! Such gorgeous hiking trails with lots of trees and “nature stairs”. One of my favorite places in dfw! They are very strict on closing time though, we timed our walk back poorly and got locked in. Had to get the PD to come open the gates.
Absolutely Beautiful scenery, well marked and very very clean. I never saw any trash. My dog and I had a great time!
So many different trails for all different levels of ability. You cannot go wrong here. Volunteers keep the trails in great condition, yet its always a big wild adventure! Worth the entry fee.
We had the best time. Beautiful trails ... birds and experiencing nature.
Beautiful place. Lots of wildlife. People please slow down, speed limit is 20 mph. People, kids and dogs on road and of course deer, armadillos, possum and other animals crossing. 3 stars only because of drivers not obeying speed limit. Tired of close calls nearly every time I walk the road. Nice clean-up!
Great place to hike and see some wildlife as well, there is a fee to get in 5 dollars per person
We got locked in at 5:05pm. Nobody said a word to us after paying our $15 to get in that they closed at 5 and that they lock the gate. 5 minutes later another car drove up behind us. So now 2 cars at 5:10. Had to call the police. As if they did not have anything better to do! Message to the person who did not even bother to drive to see if he was locking people in. Can you please spend 5 minutes looking inside? NEVER EVER COMING BACK! #HACKSAW never leave home without it.
Great location nice short hikes. Cant wait to visit when everything has bloomed.
Trails are well marked and the woods are beautiful. Picnic tables, canoeing, hiking and beautiful vista from the 12o million year old Caprock. The staff was very helpful and knowledgeable. I will go back again.
Very dead, I wanted to see the Buffalo but instead only got to see their poop... Waited around going up and down the area hiking and nothing spent about 2 hours there. We saw about 5 deer which made it somewhat worth it though. Also the prairie dogs have all died off and no one tells you unless you ask, the map tells you they are still there. Not recommended.
Love this place. Thinking about volunteering because of a conversation I had with a staff member. Didnt catch his name but he had passion in his work and motivated me. Im gonna hike here regardless but he mentioned cleaning trails and thought thats right up my alley.
Love this beautiful and peaceful park! If the weeds by the picnic tables were removed or cut short more frequently, I would have given 5 stars.
Who knew you would have to make an RSVP to hike a trail? Im all for keeping people safe from COVID, but limiting attendance via an online reservation system to a big outdoor park seems extreme and burdensome. This does not appear to be a well-thought-out decision by our local leaders that balances the potential risk vs. the needs of the community.
Five dollars to hike around this area. Bison and prairie dog areas but none were out when we went. Great easy trails. Pretty level. Not much elevation at all, decent shade.
Pretty and well preserved. Beware, the trails are longer than you think! Bring a ton of water. We got to help feed the buffaloes!!
If you need to lose yourself and recharge this is the place to be. Great staff and great programs form kids to adults.
I love how many trails there are, the variety in landscape, and that they allow pups! If you want a more challenging hike, Canyon Ridge definitely the best. Cross Timbers and Riverbottom are good for a more level but still shaded hike. Its only $5 a person to get in, which is worth it. If you plan on going a lot, look into getting their year membership.
Excellent place to view and lightly hike/walk around in nature.*Despite what their brochure and info says, none of the trails are stroller friendly. Be prepared to either carry your toddler/young child if they cannot walk for lengthy time periods.*take your own water and extra water. Pack a picnic.Very informative visitors center with nice and simple displays of live snakes, fish, turtles. Excellent views when out on the trail. Our favorite was the boardwalk/pier overlooking the marsh.
I love the nature preserve. It is calm, clean, and full of wildlife.
I love this nature center, but there is room for improvement. Many trails we went down were poorly marked, and we ended up running into dead-ends. Parking can get extremely cramped on the popular trailheads.Besides that, the nature center is great for viewing wildlife and getting out to nature. Its just a shame that the other visitors can ruin a good day outside. Slow families completely block trails to take selfies and there are the occasional visitors blaring their music over Bluetooth speaker. Some people just walk out on the roads. It just kind of ruins the whole experience when you cant get away from others or their noise. If there was some presence by the park authorities to enforce rules, this would be one of the better places to go for a nature walk. Until then, Im unsure if the entry fee is worth it.
Love the trails !
Great for hiking and enjoying nature.
I love visiting in the winter its always so pretty. Cant wait for spring so that I can walk all the trails.
You can really find peace here great little hikes and beautiful views
Beautiful and serene. Great place to view wildlife.
Loved hiking here. Easy, beautiful trails and few people.
Visiting is a lot of fun and hiking the trails is both beautiful and peaceful. However, the lack of trail markers is kind of bizarre and a real surprise. It makes countries like Peru and Rwanda feel highly developed with their trail systems being very sophisticated in comparison.
I definitely recommend this area for anyone interested in wildlife photography or just a nice hike. The trails are well worn in and easy to follow with plenty of sights to see along the way. There is everything from pelicans to alligators and theyre easily viewed depending on season.
Great place to hike, drive spend time with family or just getting out into nature so close to the city - you feel like you are in the country. Very relaxing. See deer often in the later afternoon. We have purchased season passes for many years now...
So much fun going here in the early hours and hiking with friends. Enjoying nature and the trails, much needed for a time away from technology and the busy life to enjoy simple walking.
Plenty of trails to choose from. Each one with a different scenic view.
I am definitely going back to explore more of the trails. Make sure you wear good shoes, as there may be water or steep areas that even regular athletic shoes are not good preparation for (those areas are very small and avoidable if you want). USE THE MAP! And it will be awesome. The Center also has plenty of information about the programs, animals (some living there for observation) and plenty of parking.
Been here twice now and I love it! You can connect with nature. Love the boardwalk and the scenic views.
This was the second time for us to kayak here. Loved the trip up the river.
Well maintained, clean. Good facilities.
Beautiful! It is best to get there early as you can take a few hours hiking depending on what trail you take.
Lost of fossils here. Actually 1.5 million year old oyster fossils! Also if you look around you can find Jasper
Friendly folks work here. Great nature preserve right out side Ft. Worth. Bison are out starting again this spring.
Very relaxing, peaceful, and nature filled experience.I am not sure why there is a change to go in, but otherwise it’s lovely.Paying that price everytime is not something I would do, but once a lifetime it’s worth it.
I love this place! But please take your noisy kids elsewhere!! People come here to see nature and calm... Not hear banshee-children screaming, scaring away everything wild and us! BABY BUFFALO pics
Very peaceful...wonderful canoe area...
Fun easy hike with dogs. A small portion of the trail had a steep ascent, trekking poles will definitely help but since its a short distance youll be fine without them. My boyfriend and I walked from Greer Pavilion to Crosstimbers and back in 7 hours. We had 3L of water for the both of us and our dogs had their own water in their backpacks. 2 extra liters would have been great because we ran out of water with 4 miles to go. Definitely going back and taking more water
Fantastic trail along the Trinity River. Very shaded so even in the summer it is nice. Time to launch some canoes!
Lots of awesome hiking. My dogs love it!
This is a real jewel of natural beauty not far from downtown Fort Worth. Plenty of opportunities to see and experience nature. Enjoyed our hike, seeing the bison herd was super!
Ive walked here a few times now and walked most of the trails. Such a nice place. Most of the trails are tree covered so you have shade if walking in the heat. It has guides on the trail to show you which trail you are on when looking at a map. Definitely worth the $5 a person to get in.
What a beautiful place! The visitor center has a lot of fun info and even the tiny gift shop had a solid amount of things to buy. I had a long chat with one of the great staff who took it upon herself to start the convo of info after seeing me take a interest in the snakes. She even helped me get mor comfortable by taking 1 out and letting me touch it! What a brilliant way to encourage interest! Theres also all kind of events going on, basically the type of place youd want to be a member of. Lots of walking and discovery!
Awesome time hiking with friends, both human and furry (dog). Was like discovering a hidden gem! So quiet, peaceful and naturally beautiful!
It only took one time to fall in love with this place! If you enjoy nature and animals, you should check this place out and then get a membership!
We all had such an amazing time yesterday. The festival was great and the hike was completely amazing. Thank you so much Patsy for all your knowledge. Are two young men just absolutely loved it thank you so much
This place is really interesting. It has so many different landscapes and scenery. It’ll take multiple trips to fully explore the whole area. It’s a must see!
Good hiking trails. Its worth the five dollars. They give you a good map at the entrance. There is a dock where you can launch a kayak and it connects all the way to Lake Worth if you want to paddle that far. I havent seen an alligator, but Ive seen the bison and lots of deer. There used to be prairie dogs but I dont think they have them any more. There are also some CCC ruins which are kind of cool.
Has a handicap accessible bathroom it by the park trail.Overall very nice set of trails. Some are kept up better than others but overall very nice place to visit to get away from the city.Bison exhibit seems to be hit it miss.
Its a good escape from the city
I was just introduced to this place. Its amazing. Lots of trails and wildlife. The trails are clean and everyone I met was friendly. There is an area with Buffalo. I didnt expect that. The river is beautiful and there are a lot marshy swampy areas that are full of fish and wildlife.
Great time on trails
Awesome fun for the entire family
Beautiful nature center located in northern Fort Worth, definitely a hidden gem. Wonderful trails that snake along the river, perfect for day hike with the pups.
Not much to say about this place except for it is wonderful . Lots of deer.
It is not worth the money. While I enjoyed walking the trails, I know there are other places in the metroplex that have nice trails and are free. For example, River Legacy in Arlington and Cedar Ridge Preserve in South Dallas.
The fall festival was very fun, our daughter loved it!
This place is magical! The trails cover several different ecosystems (river bottom, prairies, etc.), and if youre lucky you can see buffalo. Great place to bring kids or just to enjoy native North Texas plants and animals.
I love this place. Many diverse areas to hike. Many different animals to see and amazing views. A very good, cheap option for great hiking!
Great place to bring your family! Pet friendly too. Beware though there arent many places to sit down sling the trail.
A wonderful oasis for a rather easy hike. Multiple trails and lots of native plants and animals. I saw 2 deer and a variety of birds. A good place for bird watching, especially egrets, ducks, etc, is a trail along the river.I will return again for sure. They close at dusk and if your left, you have to call fwpd to come get you. Also bring your best lens for bird photos. The walk is never too far.
I love this place. Its safe and clean. We live Kayaking here. Its easy for newbies like us to load and unload. We have seen some cute alligators on the banks. They do not seem to mind the kayakers.
Loved the hiking trails and buffalo gang. One of my favorite parts of our Fort Worth trip.
Its a must go if you love getting out and enjoying the out doors
