It was extremely pleasant to be in that historical building. The expanse of heavy old wood that has been richly cared for in the main sanctuary was breathtaking. The event I was there for didnt afford the opportunity to tour the entire building but I truly enjoyed the sanctuary & the reception area. The acoustics in the sanctuary were excellent as well.

Hayti Heritage Center was the original St. Joseph AME Church. This location has beautiful stained glass windows and beautiful acoustic. Its the location of many Durham community events and therefore has a warm & friendly atmosphere.

Very lil security and the wrong color too of police supoort if you ask me. Look like intimidation not protection. Black Wall street they use to call the city of Durham. Well thats all changing now and they are doing like always. Let it fall apart to come back and take it over and run us out with over priced development.

The Campbell Brothers played here several years ago and they were unforgettable. This is a must see if you visit Durham. Ive attended several events here: concerts, and poetry readings, and its historical and beautiful.Recently I attended a wedding here and the experience was marred by a woman, from the staff I assume, who yelled at me for parking behind another car at this very crowded event. There was only one, ONE, accessible parking space even tho there was a large sign pointing to accessible parking. This person continued to berate me as I went to the entrance of the church, threatening to have my car towed, a very unpleasent experience.Thats why I came down from my usual 5 star rating for this review. There should have been a professional directing the situation, preferably on the ground, rather than from on high on the upper level.

Not very friendly or helpful on each visit. The man behind the glass. Mr Markus offered just enough information so he didnt have to get up and show anyone around. Asking for room rental rates I was asked to call back several times over three months. Mr. Markus didnt know Mrs. Polly in the back when she was available didnt know and the director was not available. After being told Tuesdays and Thursdays were available. It was suddenly booked by a yoga class and the room was not available any longer. I have the destinct feeling I didnt know the secret handshake Or grease the right palm. Good to see the old boys network alive and well in impoverished areas of Durham.
