First stop on a wine tour of the area, by far was the best experience of all. Owner took the time to teach me how to smell and taste the wine for the best experience. They had a large array of wines for all different palates. The owner was fantastic and the wines were very good as well. The property is BEAUTIFUL.
Amazing winery! BEST wines from any mid west winery I have ever been to. The owner is so cool and is generous with his friendship and knowledge.
Going back next weekend! Great wine, views, and hospitality! Karen and John were so welcoming! Going to bring a picnic lunch this time and hope the fall colors will be there to greet us.
Im giving 5 stars because of my experience, and the wines I tried were delicious. I dont think Ill be getting my fiance back wine tasting with me any time soon though. Of two wines he asked to try, he tried neither of them. I understand that there is usually an order to tastings but he just wanted to try what sounded good to him and was talked out of both, with no definitive structure given. Its entirely likely we would have purchased more, but well never know because he ended up feeling embarrassed about his lack of wine knowledge. I dont feel like this was intentional, I just wish he could have had a better experience.
A really cool hidden gem of a winery. I was taught how to drink a glass of wine.
The owners were extremely friendly and kind. The wine was phenomenal and you absolutely cannot beat the views. I would highly recommend.
A hidden gem. Unpretentious. A very nice experience. We have returned a few times. Good Iowa wines from a knowledgable and caring owner.
Very friendly and knowledgeable staff and great wine
Amazing experience here, the gentleman who was behind the counter when we arrived was very personable, knowledgable, and had lots of great stories about the history around the vineyard, you can even walk through the grapes. Weve been to quite a few wineries and this was by far my favorite one yet! 100%
Very relaxing, host is very friendly.
Very knowledgeable owners and overall great experience!
Had a great time here on the 4th of July. Even though they were setting up for big family party they showed us all the necessary attention. John is great at sharing his knowledge and the wines are exceptional!! We will be back again!!
A great place to check out if you like dry wines, especially reds. Its a short drive from Dubuque and has a nice outdoor area to relax in. Plus the owner is both knowledgeable and entertaining!
John and Karen are great hosts and very knowledgable about their craft. We drove 3 hours to visit the winery and as before were not disappointed!
John and Karen are extremely nice and love sharing their knowledge of wine drinking. Theyve created a fun environment to relax and enjoy wine. They have a wide variety of delicious wines. We will definitely be back again to learn more and try more wine.
We stopped Saturday 10-05-19 with a somewhat large group. Our overall experience was somewhat both negative & positive. Being educated on all the dos and donts of wines was ok.......However, several in our group felt the gentleman behind the bar giving out his knowledge didnt need to curse, and he was rude & condescending .I dont think any of us would ever come back.Thank you for your hospitality.
My husband and I stopped here on our way back home to Mount Vernon. Johns wine, champagne, and hospitality were top notch, and I learned some things I never knew about wine tasting. We highly recommend this winery and will definitely visit again. Thanks John!! Jo & Randy
I have been to many wineries in Iowa and quite a few across the U.S. This was by far one of the best experiences I have ever had. John is delightful and very knowledgeable. The dry wine is phenomenal. This is one of the few places I have actually liked more than one dry red. His wines are top rated, even internationally. Highly recommend stopping here if you are in the area.
We had a wonderful experience at this winery! The owners are fantastic and are so very knowledgeable about all off the wines. We learned so much. Best wines we have tried so far in Iowa! Definitely worth the stop!
BEST experience! Better than our Napa trip last year. Owner very knowledgeable and willing to teach. Bring your Iowa pork chops ... can use their grill and will teach you how to pair your wine with your food.
Me and my wife stopped in here after being very disappointed in the wineries we had stopped at thus far to encounter totally awesome wines with John not only educating but also enteriaining us the whole time. Brought a bunch of great wines home and plan on stopping in the next time we are in the area. Will also bring John some of my own wines and meads to share with him and his wife. This is a must stop for anyone. So glad we found it.
Best wine i have so far. Drive 3 hours to get there. Knowledgeable staff.
No place like this east of napa valley. Its what I look for in a winery. Just a surprise to find in Iowa. Will definitely be back. Note: try the Legy Lisa terrific!
Very nice people. Wines are great. Brianna a favorite. Worth the drive from East Moline.
Had a great time tasting some pretty good wines.
John was great. If you are wanting a true local dry wine, youll love it here.
The owner is very friendly and knowledgeable. All the wines were excellent. I personally like dry reds he has some of the best around
Best experience ever, John taught us so much. Love his story, love his wine.
Absolutely love this winery! Great wine and owners are amazing!
Love this place. Some of the best wine in the area. A hidden gem
Easily the best wine Ive had in the Midwest.
Liked it
Great wine, great conversation. Worth the trip!
Great place, great people, excellent wine.
Needle in the hayfield! Stumbled across a listing for Barrel Head winery in a publication we found staying in Dubuque. This is an amazing private winery on the vineyard near the airport. Very knowledgeable winemaker and staff and some of the best estate wines we have found in the Midwest. While they have a couple of the typical fruit wines common in the area, their jewel is the amazing variety of common red and whites at a quality we have not found elsewhere in the region. Stop in for a sample, and like us this will become a staple to our Galena/Dubuque trips. Grills are even available if you want to bring food and have a picnic to enjoy your first bottle!
Owner is extremely knowledgeable, so not only was I able to taste award-winning wines and champagnes -- but also gain a greater understanding of the process of making the libations!
Great wines, band we always stop when we come out to eastern Iowa. We love John and he makes great dry wines!
Great place to go !!! Dont miss it!!
