What a truly wonderful place! A hidden treasure that unless you knew you were looking for it you would miss it! I had heard the stories about the Streets of Detroit downstairs in the museum, and how cool it was and how realistic it was. But until we got there and started walking around I wasnt sure what to expect. The first part is separate and very cool all by itself but once you enter the Old Wooden Streets section and see all of the historical sets you are awestruck by just how authentic and amazing it all is!! I could have spent days down there, it was really cool. A really neat atmosphere and so well presented. I recommend this place to anyone who has even a passing interest in history, Detroit, the early 1900s or just seeing new and interesting things.

This museum is FANTASTIC....Approached from the Detroit River going up Woodward Avenue...one of the longest roads in America, you will be amazed by the transformation down town. I remember coming to the Historical Museum in the 1950s as a child and bring my kids here in the 1980s...Yesterday I spent the day there with my grandkids! It is such a treat to see this museum in all its glorious restoration. The exhibits and educational and surprisingly well laid out. There is something for everyone. History of the Native American tribes in the region...early settlers to Michigan...industry and the war effort and of course the 197 riots. Entrance is FREE. Parking in Museum gated lot is $9. You can also donate at the door. Well worth the 3.5 hours it will take to see all

Had a really good time at the museum. We started off in the basement which was a reconstructed old town which was very cool but not a lot of items where labeled. After that it got way better. Everything from the first sports bar, music, cars, Underground Railroad, civil unrest and riots, interesting Detroiters, it was all there and laid out for smooth transition from one space to the other. We really had a good time. Plus, it’s free. Do leave a donation to keep this museum operating.

Im so glad the Detroit Historical Museum stood the test of time and made it through the years. I remember them struggling during the 80s. I find the Detroit Historical Museum an interesting and important place to visit. They have a wide variety of items pertaining to the Detroit in particular, Michigan in general and related to the United States overall. It is easy to get to. Usually there is reasonably priced parking on the street. For a small fee you can park in the convenient parking located behind the museum. Before entering or before you leave be sure to visit the attraction they have at the front of the building facing Woodward. It is a nice plaza with references to historical characters and the State and City. The displays in the museum are tasteful and informative. They are a bit heavy on auto manufacturing, though this is the ‘Motor City’. I say this because there are many other things that have been manufactured in Detroit – not just cars. Many things have been invented in the city and developed here as well but they get short shrift, if at all.Nevertheless this is a great place to visit. Lots to learn. It is a wonderful place to bring children, a date, your family or to visit on your own for reverie or research. There are often events here so take advantage of them when you can. If you are seeking a pleasant and interesting venue for your own large even then I suggest you talk to the management and staff about it.

This place is awesome. It features some really cool exhibits on Detroits history, everything from a real-life recreation of a street long ago, to a functioning automobile body drop from the old Clark Street Cadillac plant. There is also an interactive model train display in the basement. On some weekends, they also screen documentary films about the citys history. And best of all, admission is free!
