Greatest experience of my life learning about the people of color in the mid west. I am so humble and grateful I had time in my life to learn about history that belong to me.
If you want to get a sense of the African-American experience in Denver as well as the wild west, this museum is a must-see. Do not underestimate its size, as it contains so many important national and local historical gems. Including a video about an all-black settlement in Colorado that is now a ghost town. As for the odd operating hours, that is mainly because it is volunteer run, but if you’re able to work it, into your schedule you will not regret it.
Had an amazing time. There are many historical pieces and pictures on display coupled with information for you to read and look at. The tour guides at this museum were kind and helpful to me. Get ready to spend at least 1.5-2 hours there. There are also items for sale such as dvds about the western American history, books, shirts. I recommend visiting this museum. It was time well spent. I will be back again to visit in the future.
This place is a gem unveiling the “hidden figures” of the American West. Learn more about those who had a major impact on the gold rush, cattle ranching, rodeos, medicine, wartime, and innovation but don’t get the recognition they deserve. The staff is very knowledgable and engaging. Highly recommend!
It is filled with so much history and it is worth the trip. It makes your think about the history that you know.
What an amazing collection of history that no one living in this area should miss. It is filled with little known facts and history of black people who changed the world. Don’t miss the video downstairs. The curators are knowledgeable, professional and have first hand experiences to share. This is a rare opportunity to learn what isn’t taught in school.
Quick tour but immensely educational, Im glad I made time to visit this historical site on my trip to Denver. Left feeling inspired, impressed at how much effort goes into establishing and maintaining a place like this, and with new names to research and pay further respect to. Essential visiting for anyone who enjoys learning about the old wild west and quasi-mythological landscape of frontier times.
Loved it! I plan to visit again and take more people with me! I think it is fantastic that the home of Colorados Medical Pioneer, Dr. Justina Ford, is being used to tell the story of many black pioneers, cowboys, ranchers, etc.
Great museum for Black Americans accomplishments, innovations, and inventions; staff are knowledgeable, and it is in the home of Dr. Ford who delivered over a thousand babies of all ethnicities!!!
Great experience. Very knowledgeable. Enjoyed my visit. Will recommend
This is a hidden gem! Ive lived here all my life, finally experienced the wonders of this museum
I helped the curator before it was founded. Paul Stewart was a fascinating man with the exhuberance of a 10-year-old about Black people in the old West. Now Black American West is a monument of our history, cram-full of fascinating objects with endless stories. From its beginnings focusing on Black cowboys, miners, Buffalo Soldiers, and rodeo riders, it now showcases Black people of any profession, who figure in Western history. It is also ideal for small gatherings, lectures, filmings, even a bit of craftmaking for children.Be careful, you may very well find something about your own family here.Group tours are available by appointment at other times.
Its worth seeing. It had good vibes. The people were friendly knew a lot of information.
Great history lesson and inspiring stories. A must see when you are in Denver!
Glad we found this on Google. Woman who welcomed us was super nice and knowledgeable. Both the standing exhibits and films were informative.
Super cool museum. The area is gentrifying at an alarming rate and this museum shows us why we need to slow that way way down and preserve the rich culture and history of this historical area.Save Five Points!
Awesome historical site plenty to learn here. The staff are very friendly and knowledgeable. It is small and can be done in a short period of time. It is located in the neighborhood so parking is on the street.
Im so glad that I stumbled across this museum. The entrance hostess was very informative and entertaining of black and latino history for the area. I wil have to order a few of the books they have displayed from their gift shop.
Vital information to our community!
Great history, articles, and memorabilia that confirms the heritage of African American cowboys. The tour guide is very knowledgeable. White, black, Asian, or Hispanic check this place out on Friday or Saturday the place is steeped in Denver history. Do it, Do it NOW!
Amazing rich history and very educational. I strongly recommend a visit if in the area.
Good introduction to the history of African Americans who moved out west to have a good life
Great place to visit full of history.
Colorado Black history at its best I saw a film of Dr Justina Ford and also a documentary on Oscar Brown Jr. jr. Very nice
I loved going through the museum and Learning about the Black American cowboys. Very educational!
Has potential They really need to work on the collection there is a lot of African American Western pieces around the country it would be great if they work with those museums to either acquire or get lent some artifacts
This was a wonderful museum of the rich history of the often ignored and forgotten contributions that Black Americans have made Colorado what it is today. The Black Cowboys of our history should be honored as much as anyone else who made this state, my home and of whom I am a native of and they should be acknowledged throughout our history. I am so appreciative of this museum carrying on this knowledge for everyone to learn about.
I thoroughly enjoyed this place.
Very helpful and knowledgeable ladys. Thank You
Although I do not share African American heritage, I was very surprised at how welcomed I was. I learned a wealth of knowledge in a short time and was very pleased with our reception. One of the things I found most interesting was the old home itself. Very real feel of authentic history here.. Highly recommend this as a day stop!
Modest museum chock full of artifacts, photos and information about Black frontiers people, cowpeople, and the Buffalo soldiers. They have a section dedicated to modern day Black cowboys. And the tour guide is like a griot, very knowledgeable about Black history overall. When you think of Colorado you don’t initially think of Black people. But we were here, and played a vital role in settling the West. I didn’t know. And now that I do, I feel so proud!
What a wonderful place to learn more about the history and legacy of blacks in the country.
This is a very small museum that tells a big story. Friendly staff, a good collection of artifacts and a lot of history. I personally prefer smaller museums that I can see in an hour or two and this fits that bill
Good place to learn REAL history
Wonderful experience, so friendly and informing. Great artifacts
Best place in Denver
WHO KNEW?????The history of African Americans in the west, is a hidden treasure waiting to discovered. Our guide, Mrs. Gentry is a descendant of many of the individuals featured in the museum. Listening to her passionate stories of those who built cities and contributed heavily to Colorado, was like sitting at the foot an ancient African griot.Get your wife, get your parents, and most importantly get your children, and head to this museum, so they can witness and build on a glorious past, to make an even better future!
The role of African Americans in the Colorado is explored here with many unknown facts on display.
Lots of lost information. Find out about The Real McCoy.
Took my summer group to see a side of history that they didnt know existed - we had a good day. There is a fee, this is not a free museum.
This is a life changing place. Staff was extremely knowledgeable.
Learned a great deal about the history of the African American people in Denver and the Five Points neighborhood
Wonderful place with a wealth of historical information. Knowledgeable and welcoming staff. I will return!
Wonderful Place of Learning History at Its Best
I went into this museum with a desire to learn something and did I ever. The staff without a doubt are knowledgeable about the subject and are more than willing to help you with any questions that you may have. I will return and spend more time here.
Amazing photos and a real sense of history on that house. Friendly and helpful staff.
Lots of stuff. Could be organized!
Black History, kept hidden not fake news
In a word - EXCELLENT!!!
I was so happy to stumble across this with my wife and kids. I plan on taking my kids to this Museum regularly so they can learn very important history about Black American West.
Located in the former home of Dr. Justina Ford, the first Black woman doctor in Denver. Celebrate Black History by checking out noteworthy African American contributions.#24 on The Best of Denver. The best places and must see venues in the Denver, Colorado Metro area.
Good history on African American who settled in Colorado
I have taken students from other countries to the Black American West Museum numerous times and am always delighted to hear the wonderful narrative that we receive from our generous tour guides there. It is important for every person to know the contributions that African Americans have made to Denver.........and to the West. It is well worth the trip!
This was a really cool place it was unfortunately closed on the weekday that we were there so I got to take a lot of pictures of the outside of it Ill see if I can find so.
It costs $10 to get in. There are no photography allowed but I learned things about Black Americans related to Colorado that I did not know occurred. I learned about Black Cowboys. I learned about some soldiers. This museum was full of photos and items as well as information about them.
It was an interesting visit and had very nice collection of items in the military and cowboy museum.
Your presence in the community is more important now than ever! Thank you
They dont let you take pictures, but it was still nice and informative
Great museum. Lots of black history
Great place to take the children
If you are into western history, or the history of Black America please see this place. You never know, how much you dont know, until you seek out History.
This place is a hallmark of history, ingenuity and perseverance. The late Mr. Paul Stewarts realization of African American contributions to the building of The West. Everyone can and should celebrate this museum!
I would encourage the residence of Denver, young and old to visit this unique Museum. You will not find anything like it in Denver!
A great place to visit
Thank You, for your commitment to the cause.
This is the only one of its kind in bordering states
