The trail is uphill, but was gorgeous. We saw bunnies, birds, squirrels and even a snake on the trail. Definitely go in the early morning as there is little shade and it heats up quick. We will absolutely go back for a fall hike.
Quiet sanctuary. No dogs permitted. Roads need a bit of work, otherwise well kept and respected by the public (or so it seems).
Really pretty to see it but worth it! Esp if I could have gone out to see the sunset and rise!
A great place to view birds and take a little hike.
This fine place is great for viewing many types of birds and other wildlife. Nutrea are common in the water, as well as many ducks, herons, geese, etc not to mention the land birds living among the oak trees. A good place with opportunities to sit and view from a car, or go for a short walk over the hill. Highly recommended for getting to know the local Flora and fauna.
Not the best park for kids, no play structures, And most of the time its, well, its a Slough. 5 stars for its beauty. You can come to the main rest area off the highway and take in this pristine and vast open space, or you can travel farther West and find a back road that leads to the middle of the slough. A wonderful place to nature watch.
Awesome place to medidate and get some relaxation.
Very clean, nice trails, and lots of wildlife all around. Tons of poison oak, however, so be careful!
Its pretty on spring and you will never know what wildlife might appear
Has a 1.75-mile trail open year round that takes you through oak savannah. Home to the endangered Fenders blue butterfly abs dusky Canada geese.
Great place to see the surise, su sets and wildlife... couldnt use the viewfinder though... condensation?!!
Wonderful place for a day trip. Great birding spot!
Great place for an easy walk/hike with beautiful views of the valley
My favorite local hike
There are two trails at Baskett Slough. One trail, open year round, is a memorial loop in honor of an Oregon conservationist who was a big part of the wildlife refuge and who was tragically killed on flight 93 on 9/11/2001. Its a short loop with a little elevation gain. There is a spur from the loop to a nice viewing platform. We hiked on 4/2, two days after the seasonal trail opened for the season. Most of it is a pretty primitive trail - just mown grass - with the exception of a walk along paved road near the water. Spring rain has made the grassy mown path pretty muddy and wet, so plan ahead with your footwear. The walk back up Mt. Baldy is pretty steep but doesnt take too long, and theres plenty of space to catch your breath along the grassy slope. We saw several people with binoculars and birding guidebooks and heard quite a few birds. The geese still down in the slough were fun to watch and hear.A great hike on a nice day, but plan for mud in spring and that the outer trail down to the slough and Morgan Lake is closed October 1-March 31.
So many birds, and beautiful clouds.
Beautiful family friendly hike.
Nice place to walk & enjoy the outdoors. Mix of uphill & downhill on the trails. Great view from the top.
There isnt anything that is a real WOW about it. But the area is pretty and there are always lots of birds to see. Mainly waterfowl. It used to be a great spot to stop for a little break when driving to the coast. Theres never a ton of people and a couple picnic tables, but they tore out the pit toilets years ago and never replaced them. Not even a porta potty.
Pretty place to stop and take in the scenery
Lots of wildlife, nice hiking, no dogs allowed.
Beautiful place for visiting.amazing environment.
Peaceful. Definitely worth the stop
Cool spot. Great views
Wait for migration time, exquisite sunsets, many species. Some great places to set up your camera without disturbing anyone. Lots of water, some swampy. Beavers, foxes, herons, birds of prey, mergansers, shockers and more. Traffic is respectful to this nature sanctuary, a pit stop on the migratory path.
Beautiful area with views.
Beautuful serenity. A place for contemplation.
Breathtakingly beautiful every step of the way. Great for short open ares hikes or with small kids.
Wonderful little stroll..Fall is best for the colors!
Great hike not to hard get to watch the geese
This is a great park right off the highway that makes for beautiful views year round of the valley from all directions. I especially love the view during the fall and winter of the migrant birds, great blue herons and great egrets. There are several miles of trails that go up and around a hardwood forested hill and lead down to a small pond on the other side. Just watch out for poison oak! I didnt realize how bad it was there until the fall came several years ago and the leaves of the poison oak turned red, revealing that is was all over on the sides of some areas of the trails.
Gorgeous, not crowded. Thousands of birds. Bring your long lenses.
Stopped for a rest and to let dog go to bathroom. They should put bathroom in here.
I like birds. Theres a free telescope.
Beautiful quiet and great for nature watching
Great hiking trails. Great scenery. Bird season is beautiful.
Absolutely gorgeous place to drive through or hike the trail to the look out. Always birds, and ofter other wildlife and critters. There was a golden eagle there last time we drove through! Take the extra 10 minutes to hop off the highway and detour through. Its well worth it.
Very quiet and beautiful to come to relax and recuperate your thoughts. Beautiful landscape. The road off the main highway to get there a little dusty gravel road. Lots of birds. The water was so beautiful especially when it is windy.
Nice place. Quiet and peaceful. Good place to get away even if for just a few minutes. Walking path is not paved its on gravel but nice experience none the less.Does have bathroom with a large hole for toilet and if I remember correctly no running water. Regardless well kept and peaceful place to get away or take the family.
Beautiful and easy hike, great place to see wildlife. Lovely locale for a date or solo walk.
A quiet place to pull off the road. I didnt see any wildlife when I visited. It was too windy to smoke a pipe.
Saw a ton of geese and some really interesting wildlife. Beautiful spot.
I enjoy driving through to see what birds are present. There are some nice hiking trails too.
Such a beautiful place. And such a variety of waterfowl!
This is a wonderful location right out of either city Salem independence Monmouth Dallas or Rickreall. Very common to see deer out here and if youre a bird nerd as I am you can spend countless hours looking through your binoculars or taking pictures. Its hit a very easy walk with some gradual slopes please follow the rules in dont bring your dog out here dogs are prohibited.
Nice place to take a break on your way to the coast from Salem
Great little jot and good for bird watching.
Saw my first ever white pelican. Beautiful place. Should be more like it. Use the binoculars!
Beautiful, easy hikes, wonderful views, well kept trails. A couple of small hill climbs, but good resting spots.
Would be nice to see it like the old days when you could hunt it.
This place is a hidden jewel and a lovely park to hike! A lot of the trails are covered so hiking in the summer time is pleasant. 2/3 of the park is closed during the fall and winter but the main hike is accessible and beautiful year round.
Great place for a hike. Awesome view
This is one of my favorite scenes on my way to Salem. I stop in from time to time to relax with the beautiful views!
Nice overlook. You need to go down the road to the trails to experience the full beauty
Beautiful views, awesome place for a picnic.
It was cold, raining on the day I was there. It was great!
Nice view but not much in the way of facilities
Awesome wild place..
Approximately a 3hr hike. Very easy. Would be good to take people of all fitness levels.
Easy walk. Great view and beautiful oak grove too.
Beautiful & peaceful place to enjoy the view of the valley from a comfortable viewing platform, & to see a wonderful gathering of wildlife, particularly birds. Great place for photography. Beautiful little woodland trail.
This is the most peaceful place in Dallas area in my opinion. I come here quite often to meditate, and hike the trails. Its calming to my soul. I really enjoy the beautiful hills and wildlife.
Love to take a rest break here.
Best hiking trails ever
Be careful here because something broke the walkway and it needs repair.
Some of the trail names dont match the map, but the map is pretty easy to read. Very beautiful peaceful and a good place for either a mile loop or a 3 mile loop.
Always ️ this stop!!
Pretty animals
I drive by it every day on the way to work. Google just thinks I visit it :)
Close to town but still not very trafficked so the hike was nice and quite.
Good place to sit and watch wildlife.
A protected environment for migratory fowl. There are too few in our States....
Its a great place for observing waterfowl and raptors. Theres easy access to a kiosk/viewing shelter off Route 22. The hiking trailheads can be reached by gravel roads. Some trails are only open April 1st - Sept 30th.
Peaceful and quiet
Agreed beautiful setting. Lookout at the top is gorgeous. Breath taking :)
Nice place to stop and smoke a bowl. Need better restroom facility, and you would think state could afford to pave it and put in some lighting. But then it would be a rest area!
Incredible place to be. Quiet and peaceful. Lots of birds. Very calm and loving environment
Nice Breeze.
A great place for a hike. There is a man that counts butterflies, he is a bit nosy. Otherwise, a nice, peaceful hike.
Easy pullout with wildlife viewing area. Educational kiosk is great for young and old alike.
Peaceful
I went here with friends who are avid bird watchers and they enjoyed their visit greatly. At the viewpoint pavillion, we especially enjoyed the panoramic view, and appreciated the free telescope and literature available. We spent several hours looking at birds throughout the refuge.
Kids would probably enjoy this too, but its really and older paced kind of place
Beautiful place. Its very quiet.
Neat little stop always pretty and great place to take photos of the wildlife
You definately feel alone out here. The trail was muddy in some places. The constant pops (possibly guns) were super annoying. The sounds were coming from all directions.
