We went here on a Sunday for the Barrio Arts Fest. They are normally closed on Sundays so this was a treat, as every time we go past this location, it seems like they are closed because I never see any cars in the parking lot or any activity of any kind.Their hours are Tuesday through Friday 10 to 5 and Saturdays from 10 to 2. And they do have a free parking lot in the back. The sign outside says this is the national museum of Puerto Rican arts and culture. The building itself is fantastic, in fact thats the best part of the museum. This building has undergone a major renovation and it was well worth it. However the art inside the building is sparse and very little to speak of.On the first floor they had an exhibit by Oscar Lopez Rivera and not much else. Large rooms with hardly anything in them, I dont think that this building is being used to a its full potential. On the second floor they had an exhibit of poetic science which is an artistic scientific approximation about El Yunque however it was closed on the day that we visited because of the Art Festival. The supervisor told us that they did not have enough employees working that day to open the second floor. Now that I know that they actually are open and the hours that they are open, I will return on another day to check out the second floor.
Beautiful place. It is a small museum, but free and cute it has different rooms representing different things of puerto rican culture. I attached one image that I absolutely loved and the view of the pond which is right next door. I went with a friend and there was not a lot of people there which I love for my social issues with crowds we went on a school day maybe that is why it wasnt busy. My friend and I were able to be silly and dance in the drum room there was music playing and we tried to dance a bit(there is open space so you wouldnt bump into anything if you dance). Would I go every day no. But I could go as a yearly thing or maybe an event. Near by they have food trucks with latino food its in humboldt park so there is a lot of latino culture there so you can get a glimpse of the puerto ricans inside the museum and when you go out can experience it even better with the food and the people.
This is the only museum about Puerto Rican art in the United States outside of Puerto Rico. Its in a small venue, but located inside the former Humboldt Park Receptory Building and Stable - a two-floor Chicago Landmark built in 1895-96, some 120-plus years ago!
Im glad this exists and it often has interesting and important exhibits. The gift shop always has good stuff and the Barrio Fest during the Summer is one of my favorite events. My only complaint is that I wish there was more in this museum. Compared to the Mexican museum in Pilsen it is pretty sparse. I assume this is because they receive much less funding and interest than the Mexican museum and are in a much smaller building.
Beutiful building and art . Showing Puerto Rican culture and heritage
Amazing museum that is free and open to the community as well as visitors. Stop by Humboldt Park and learn about the rich history of Puertoricans in the island and the diaspora.
The museum was closed when online and maps said the museum was open. No one answered the phone and the gate was locked. I was really looking forward to seeing this museum :(
Beautiful art work. I had no idea they host different artist here. Looking forward to coming back in July for their event.
Had a great time with my daughter very educational very nice and very clean interesting
Gorgeous architecture, powerful history and beautiful art!
Small Museum. Free entry. Can cover in under two hours. It just covers 3 topics. I suppose thats all there is room for. The second floor contains old movie posters. The movies themselves seem to be about social inequality, oppression and health issues. First floor contains the history of the park that the Museum is situated in. Then there are colorful banners that speak of Bomba music. I dont know if the gallery displays change but I hope that more resources are pulled together.
Very informative and free museum embedded within picturesque Humboldt park.
It was for Noche De Salsa we had a great time many organizations attended this event.
Small, but informative. Loved the history of my island and of this ever evolving neighborhood.
Amazing. I really enjoyed the exhibits. And its the perfect size if you are traveling/visiting with a toddler.
This museum is cute and quaint. I love the plena room! Its a small museum so you can get through it in one - two hours. But its packed with interesting information on the history of Puerto Rico. We werent charged to enter. I highly recommend this place, especially if you are Puertorican!
Fantastic visit. Will return in a few weeks.
This is a small museum I wish there was a little more sophisticated art to it like the Mexican Art Museum. The staff were very friendly and hospitable.
Went with a friend and more than enjoyed my time
Free parking on premises. I visited the museum to take photographs and learn about Humboldt Parks history. Air conditioned facility with clean restrooms and helpful staff. While you are in the area, take time to walk around Humboldt Park. Depending what month you go, you may even get to do a little bird watching as birds migrate and nest.
So much information so beautifully put together.
Had company event there its a nice ambiance.
Finally someone is investing in educating people about Puerto Ricans
This museum stands in a architectural rich building with a great historical history. I love the information and inspiration that they potray through other artists.
Very interesting place to spend a day, even though its small it still a nice place to see
Beautiful art and space. Great place for a wedding!
What museum? If thats a museum Subway is Gibson steak house. If anything its a JOKE
I had my wedding here on July 22 2017. Yesica worked with me and answered all my questions and even let me have the doors open a little earlier for set up. The staff onsite did an amazing job! Everyone kept commenting on how beautiful they thought the facility was. I would definitely use it again for events!!! I would definitely recommend this site as a place for weddings!! Very clean and beautiful!!
Always a wonerful place to learn our history
The first and only Nation Museum of Puerto Rican Art and Cultural. Absolutely a must go. One of five Museums in the Park in Chicago. A must go.
Great sangria fest is everything!
Its a beautiful place. However, I found it rather empty. It needs more art and lacking information/stories behind the art pieces and artists. The art, sculptures and science exhibits are exceptionally brilliant...stunning!
I love it here. My third time going for an event with the cruz family!!!
Sad to say I was expecting more. Very few art pieces and the ones they had werent thought provouqing nor showedmastery of any teqnique. I have better pieces in my collection. Maybe Ill donate one.
Went to the sangria festival great time
Its history is amazing. What you can learn about the surrounding community and the Puerto Ricans who have lived here since the 1960s.
I love it.
Place very dirty and empty... no people there
This place is great. Not to be missed in Humboldt Park - Park history, Puerto Rican history, great art.
The place to be to see what culture is all about this is a must see. You and rent out the place for a good time with family and friends!
Unique opportunity to support the exotic and fragile Puerto Rican culture that is part of our amazing Chicago.
