Great free art exhibit. Make sure you reserve your ticket in advance and answer the COVID questionnaire before arriving.
I am an art lover and I am amazed by the modern art and exhibits they presented. They got small collections but its worth the visit. You should try too.
Reservations are now required but no one mentioned that when we called to inquire about the hours. So we drove down to find out we couldnt come in even after asking the lady on the phone about the hours. I understand the process but people need to be made aware.
One of the best FREE museums in Chicago for lovers of modern art. Extremely unique pieces that get rotated all the time so you can get a fresh perspective every couple months. Multiple pieces of art work that challenge your inner beliefs with a wide variety of styles from B/W stills, to vibrant pictures with colors popping off the wall, and multiple video pieces to round out the collection.
This is an awesome find. The first exhibition I attended was for Ralph Arnold. Not only was I impressed by the quality of the gallery guide provided for the exhibition, but I was really enjoyed the depth and breadth of artwork that was efficiently integrated into the space.
Just discovered. One of the best FREE museums, that I would gladly make a donation!
We just discovered the Museum of Contemporary Photography and I dont know why it took us so long.We went to a a discussion led by Kristin Taylor, the Curator of Academic Programs and Collections. It was stimulating and enlightening. The museum is technically free, but, there is there is a donation box in the front of the entrance, feel free to donate! The actual exhibit area is 3 floors, but the actual exhibit area is small and located in a Columbia College building, Definitely check out the second floor. They have an inventory of approximately 15000 photos, so they have lots of material for exhibits. In fact, there are new exhibits every couple of months. They have well known and lesser known photographers in their collection, all of them interesting and worth a look.I highly suggest checking out their website for the current and upcoming exhibits and events.
I enjoyed this museums exhibit, but it is so hot inside, its hard to stay long. Three floors of exhibit space, though the top floor was occupied by a big group of students (the museum is located at Columbia College.) Most of the exhibit is located on the first and second floor, anyway. In this exhibit, its not strictly photography, but an amalgam of media including photography.
Was so disappointed. Came here on Monday 23rd of December and it was closed. Ive called them and left the voicemail. I wished they would post about the change in their hours or left a note on the doors. It says it opens at 10 and at 10:30 it was still closed. Ive left with nothing.Very upsetting that the museum doesnt care about customers who want to enjoy art.
I liked seeing the photographs but the people were snarky and talked as if they were better than you, and expected you to know where to go.
Really awesome FREE museum. I cant believe I hadnt been here despite living in the city for many years. I enjoyed the exhibit I saw and after talking with the front desk am looking forward to returning for the next exhibit as well. Im definitely adding it to my list of free things to do downtown and recommending that all my friends check it out.
Last day in Chicago we visited a little museum of Columbia College, the museum of Contemporary Photography. These days ( and watch – until July) there is an exhibition of College collogue Dawoud Bey devoted to anniversary of September 15th 1963 bombing black community on the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Al. (2012) Collection belongs to Birmingham Museum of Art. Bey diptyched feature of portrait of a child at the same age as one of those killed paired with a portrait of an adult at the age the child would have been in the year 2013. The images are remarkable. Also there were photographs illustrating the protests to segregation laws in 50th-60th. Just reminding us about that ugly period of our history. And inspiring to treasure the diversity of our country were each race each faith is equal.Thank you to the college developing this museum.
Great museum with an eclectic collection. Some interesting pieces, but no suggestions from me since art is subjective in the eye of the beholder.
Amazing exhibit on A.I. there currently, must see. I know the exhibits change throughout the year but stop in regardless!
Were in a museum with a nephew. He is interested in photography. We were very pleased. I recommend that anyone interested in photography come here
The MoCP at Columbia is a great place to view challenging artworks from a wide selection of art producers. One of my favorite art spots in Chicago.
What a gem. The level of work that is shown is fantastic and every exhibition I have seen has been amazing so far.
Nice, Interesting. Very small. Actually only one theme. Today, it was Ai Weiwei, who is not that interesting as a photographer, in my view.
Small, free, interesting exhibits that made me think about AI and surveillance today.
Always cutting edge, this museum is all about relevant, thought-provoking and otherwise provocative art, not necessarily photography. This museum talks about the future more than other places no matter how excellent.
Highlighting underrated work right in the heart of the city.
Said it was open but all doors were locked and couldn’t get to the exhibit!
It was very interesting. Reminded me of Battlestar Galactica and Altered Carbon.
Nice collection of photography, free and open to the public. 3 levels and 5 rooms of display so not a huge space. Worth a walk down for the more well known attractions.
The place is very awesome, the photograph is very different the expression of the artesian, picture is very rude some, the gallery it is worth to go.
Its a must see for someone who loves photography and is in Chicago. Amazing museum with very interesting exibitions.
I was disappointed with the size of the museum. I thought it would be larger. I also expected a more diverse set of work and felt that it was a lot of the same. Conceptual to the point of obscurity.
Just three levels of intimate galleries allow you to get up close with just the right amount of volume of art to be worth an hour or so of your time. Free, but donations appreciated!
More conceptually impactful than what usually hangs in the photo department of the art institute
Great exhibits and I was surprised that it was totally free.
If I going be that paper floor on the there was good only thing in though.
A nice surprise. Needs a big donor.
Small museum, but good collectin of photographs. All of them were focused on humans and what humans had done to themselves and each other. Some photos were sad, all thoughtprovoking.
Always an insightful exhibit of non-traditional work.
The Premier space for contemporary photography.
Very good experience. It enabled me as a tourist, to understand the history of the African-American population in Chicago. Staff was super-friendly and welcoming.
Bought a book and made a friend. A good experience
Great free exhibition. The collection are well prepared and message is clear and strong. Highly recommended.
Love this place.Shows are always interesting and the lecture series even better!!Columbia College does Great on this one!
Different
This is a great museum full of art and amazing pieces of art. This is great and one of the spots you should visit if you are around.
Beautiful free museum inside Columbia University. It has 3 floors and its located few blocks away from millennium Park
It is great for what it is and worth a visit if you are in the area. With that being said if they can have people in the exhibit areas talking about the pieces and if possible expand the museum.
Beautiful exhibitions and friendly staff. Enjoyed my visit.
The students do an excellent job and the exhibits are very well done.
I was pleasantly surprised but this little museum! I would definitely recommend going if youre in Chicago. And bonus is that its free!
One of my favorite museums in the world! Theres always some great photographs to look at in carefully curated exhibits.
Interesting exhibit in a very interesting place
Great artworks to view. . .A must visit for art lovers
Even thought museum is located inside the Columbia building it is not affiliated with the college directly and I was told it only presents Columbia student produced photos in rarest exceptions. Its a comparatively small museum somewhat squeezed into the three floors, but staff finds creative ways to play around the architecture.Dont forget to check out their website and dont forget about the special feature: the museum holds lots of photo prints. If you would for example like to see Sally Manns works stored there, just make an appointment on their website.
I spent a lot of time here considering this is my alma mater. Always free and open to the public! A fabulous place to see some art!
I have visited this gallery three times when I have visited Chicago. Each time, the photo exhibit has been excellent. It is a smallish place, so the changing exhibitions are very focused.
Very sad experience. It was my partners birthday, and they are a photography student. We are only in Chicago for a few days. Surprised them with a trip to this museum, which was listed as being open until 5pm. We walked in the pouring rain to get there, just for the door to be locked. A young woman opened it and said it would reopen on Thursday because its closed for a new exhibit. We leave Wednesday morning. We explained that we were visiting and that it was my partners birthday and they still said they couldnt do anything to allow us entry. Although I understand that they need to renovate sometimes, we were extremely disappointed given it said it would be open online.
Loved looking around there. Always a positive experiwnce.
It was absolutely beautiful, I went there for a field trip and I loved it :)
A great collection of rotating photographs to enjoy and they have an amazing collection to pull from.
A good surprise in Chicago and for free
Small but interesting
This place is not known well enough. A few nice galleries that are constantly changing. Often features local themed photographs
Very enjoyable and free.
Personally was expecting a bit more, but still worth visiting.
Free (donation suggested) gallery, visited an amazing exhibit centered around gender issues. A perfect respite for getting out of the cold after visiting Grant Park.
Fantastic, small museum in the heart of Columbia College.
I love randomly walking into this space, there is always an interesting exhibition going on.
Free admission. Nice time waster, and nice collections.
Enjoyed my visit. Its was fun to check out different styles of photography
Gem on Columbias campus. Small musuem that you can take in in an hour or so. Nice collection currently.
I was expecting a good deal more in the way of creativity. Overall the work was uninspired at best. The facility is nice. Come on Chicago. Youre better than this.
Small but a wonderful walk through
Columbia Colleges Museum of Contemporary Photography is small but worth visiting. It has three small floors with photography and sometimes film. And its free! A great museum to stop into if youre in the city for the day.
Excellent museum w a beautiful layout. Limited shows, but a sufficient experience overall w a very insightful tour of the artist and her works.
Great exibit on afro-futurism. Visually stunning
Love this place. Great exhibits
The 40th anniversary exhibition is a knockout, and the salon-style installation is just right. Free (and open late) on Thursdays -- as is the Art Institute up the street, if youre feeling energetic.
Located and run by Columbia College Chicago this museum has a gallery vibe allowing viewers to experience an intimacy with the art work. Executive director Natasha Egan and curator Karen Irvine do a fantastic job with every show.
Outstanding exhibits.
You pay around 30 bucks for two rooms! not going there again!
A great small museum.
I truly love photography and the exhibits here are phenomenal and it always offers a different perceptive on art itself. There is such a deep insight here and its the best way to view so many different artist.
Loved the Museum of Contemporary Photography! Especially loved the exhibit last year with Angela Strassheims photographs. It is a very different multi-level space with amazing artists included!
Only go to this place if you are interested in contemporary photography because if you arent you may not appreciate the artistic imagery on display.
Small museum with free exhibitions of contemporary photography. Thought provoking and great quality of photographs.
A nice little free museum just at the corner. Spent a little time finding the entrance but really learned a lot during the trip
This place is a small and free museum with interesting pieces. It is what the title saids, contemporary photography. It was very interesting, but personally did not speak to me. I am not saying this to discourage anyone from going, but make sure that this is part of ty our interests. Sidnote, the girl at the desk was super nice and helpful.
The museum is part of the Columbia College and host exhibitions which changes regularly. The exhibition in July 2016, Petcoke, tracking dirty energy was really interesting and a great tool to talk about a misknown problem. Visit only if you are into contemporary art.
One of the rare free museums in Chicago, contains approximately 4 small exhibitions at one go. Check for opening hours, as they are closed when the Colombia College Chicago is closed.
A very good place
Interesting pictures keep you going Learn a lot about photography and find out what kind best interest you
It is a small museum but has a very interesting collection. It is worth it the visit.
Loved it!
Always with the finger on the pulse of current events, and art-world trends. Plucky museum with loads of heart.
Good exhibit
