They gave me stale popcorn with cold butter.Only good thing about this theatre is the cool dude at the counter.
Always have a good experience when I go, nice and affordable movies and never too crowded.
If you are looking for a spot to watch not-so-knew movies for a cheaper price you are at the right spot. The theaters are pretty cozy and small, definitely nothing luxurious. Popcorn isnt my favorite but if you want the experience of almost having a movie space all for yourself Id come here!
Love this tiny place. It is pretty old and could use a couple upgrades, but I think that may be why its a cool place to go to.
Very cool classic theater with really good prices on snacks and movies. The entire visit was pleasant and they show films that other theaters have already stopped showing. Cool place. Only thing I have to say is if you have big hips, the seats are narrow and not for everyone.
Like a step back in time with a nice projection system! Full of character...
I love supporting smaller, local theaters. For less than half the price of bigger theaters you can watch similar movies at a really cool downtown venue. They have snacks, soda, and beer/wine if thats your thing! Makes an awesome date-night because it is close to other bars and restaurants.
The picture is clearer than it used to be but it was dull -- as if the light was not strong enough for the large space. So it felt like the whole movie took place in the fog. The movie was Solo and we saw it around mid June. I hope this was just a temporary issue since getting here is so much nicer than going to a mall
Reminded me of the theater in my home town, a little run down but you could feel the energy of when it was new and full of potential. Reminiscent of an older era.
Charming classic building with super cheap flicks. Given my busy schedule, Im usually getting around to seeing movies around the time the Varsity picks them up for their second runs. Popcorn is reasonably priced, and you can also get beer and wine. One criticism is that the theatre itself is a bit chilly most of the time. Also, the fans from the ventilation system are kind of a constant background hum as youre watching the movie. All that said, quality theatre with lots of history in the heart of town. Dont miss stopping by!
Very cool, old school movie theater. Nothing fancy but has that old movie theater kind of feel. Limited selection of snacks and beverages. Good spot to hit just for nostalgia.
The Varsity has such charm. The price (of everything) cant be beat. I rented the theater (really inexpensive) and had my daughters birthday party there. I was able to play a slide show on the big screen of her and all of her friends over the years, and then they played her favorite DVD. It was very cool. Definitely check this place out!
First-run movies at low prices in a cool, nostalgic, downtown location. Its like stepping back in time. The interior is slightly worn, but not enough to bother me. A great experience for very little money.
Great theater! No annoying previews before the show, great price, even for concessions. Friday night and there were 4 of us total.
$7.00 movies! Its and older theater but they play 1st run movies. Great prices on concessions, beer and wine.
A historic and iconic theater that never fails to disappoint and continues to defy time.
Beautiful historic theater, concession prices are very reasonable.
Theater was clean and comfortable, and the sound quality was good. But dont get the popcorn.
Small home town movie theater. Has new releases but also classic movies sometimes.
Support your local theater and enjoy walking around the downtown of Chapel Hill. Newer seats, cheap ticket prices, a better sound system. And you get to enjoy the fact that it is, again, A LOCAL BUSINESS! Nuff said.
Nostalgia for days! I love taking my kidos here. It is not expensive and never too crowded.
Low cost movie tickets on Franklin street. Need I say anything else? Popcorn is stale though!
It is a wonderful theatre for casual movie viewing. The theatre is small and cozy. The movies are usually a couple of months old but the price of the tickets is very cheap
Nice place!
Small but the price is perfect
Classic theater with cheaper concessions than what you’d find at your typical theater.
An amazing place built in 1927. A wonderful and cozy spot to watch a movie, improv, or to rent for a birthday party!! Trully awesome staff too!! :)
Kind staff, good prices, nice range of screenings, from whatevers hot to that great cult film you thought youd never find again.
Nice quaint small theater where you can watch semi-new movies at a decent price. Good for solo views, dates or families :) Staff are pretty chill and friendly
Cozy. Convenient.
You can see movies for cheap here after theyve been out for awhile, which is great if you missed your opportunity earlier. The seats could be updated to be more comfortable however.
Quiet, cozy place to catch the latest movies. Never crowded, always good seats available, very friendly staff.
Had a birthday party here its old school would be nice for a new date night nothing fancy just comfort
Normal movie theater, small but good enough for a college town. Meh.
Inexpensive tickets, Popcorn and beer. Love this place. Always seems clean despite the number of patrons. Owners are great people.
Improv at the Varsity was so much fun! Will definitely be back for more shows :)
Great value movies and is the Love Chapel Hill church on Sundays
Good place for birthday parties
Improv was so fun!!! Looking forward to my next trip here.
Fantastic historic theater with lots to offer: live performances, movies, improv, and more.
Clean and professional. The movie selections are usually pretty good and well attended.
No previews, cheap tickets, right in Franklin Street. Need I say more? Movie selection is small but recently its been two recent films. As of writing thats Solo and Incredibles 2.
Eclectic and wonderful. A blast from the past and cheap to boot
Small theatre with local flair, great movie, and real butter on your not-overpriced popcorn.
I think its a nice little theater, and appreciate the inexpensive tickets for movies you dont mind waiting past the initial theater rush to see.
The staff was very friendly, the theatre was nice, and the price was right. We loved it and will be coming back very soon!
Very nice, friendly staff, and convenient location.
Cute little theater with great priced concessions
Cheap tickets, and friendly staff! Old theater, but thats why its cheap
This place is really cute! They dont have as many concession options as the typical theater, but that didnt matter to us.
Cheap, friendly, clean, great selection. A+.
Great ticket prices. Theater has a nice vintage feel to it.
Used to be a second rate first run theater and now its a pretty good specialty theater
Cool little theatre with tons of history.
Clean facility, nice folks working there, great popcorn and inexpensive!!
Attended church here on Sunday morning loved it
The Varsity has that great nostalgic feeling that you always get from a good neighborhood theater. Its a little outdated, but thats why we love it.
Really cheap theater, really good for students.
Old theatre. Cannot complain because of the price. 3 dollar for a movie.
My favorite local theater!
Great local theatre to catch a movie.
A great way to relax is by going to the Varsity Theatre.
Cheap tickets and a great location with good snacks!!
Childs birthday party and movie
Ok Very CLEAN
Their popcorn is the best movie popcorn around.
Not a mega theater but very vintage and a fun place.
Fantastic atmosphere
Fun theater

Ok theater feel, clean and classic
Funky, good popcorn and cheap.
