I don’t know if this is an accurate image of Mr. Harvard because I never saw him in real life, but it’s a nice looking statue. He seems comfortable in his seat. There are steps that you can sit on next to Mr. Harvard and enjoy some snacks. It’s not as comfortable as his seat though, don’t get your hopes up.
The John Harvard statue is most certainly the most photographed at the University. You will even see crowds waiting for their chance to stand in front of the statue. It is easy to find located just inside the gates to the Harvard Yard. The campus is beautiful so you may want to expand your walking tour to see some of the other sites including a very impressive library where you may be able to determine who John Harvard actual was or was not.
It belongs here... but is it as novel or interesting as its notoriety?
A very popular statue that must be photographed by visitors inside the university grounds. The left shoe is often touched during a pose its already shiny at the tip. Believed to bring good luck, it is probably the most touched object in the university. Hence the issue about how clean it is comes to mind. One of the university tradition includes students peeing on it. So if it smells when youre near the statue, better keep your hands to yourself.
Please dont rub the shoe.... Harvard has a students tradition, every night someone pee on that shoe. Dont touch it !!!!
This is a very iconic statue in Harvard. The shoe of the statue appears polished cause visitors love to take pictures while touching the shoe of the statue. Me, I simply folded my arms cause rumors has it that some mischievous students pee on it late at night when no one is watching!!!
For everyone, you can breathe knowledge... Statue of the three lies
I love it for 3 reasons 1) it’s not John Harvard. 2) John Harvard was not the founder. 3) rubbing his foot is supposed to give good luck. The weird history behind that is fascinating. You should look it up.
This statue is located right in the middle of the square, which could be a delight to relax in summer time. However due to the weather conditions we were experiencing, we could not even look straight at the statue. What I found interesting is that despite having lived in the US only for one year, having had come from the UK, John Harvard, a clergyman had this statue raised in his honor less than 2 centuries later and have this university named after him.
Situated outside University Hall is the famous bronze statue of John Harvard known as the “statue of three lies.” Although it is inscribed “John Harvard, founder, 1638,” the statue does not depict John Harvard, he was not the founder, and the date is not correct. Student Sherman Hoar was the model for the statue’s head, and the Great and General Court of the Massachusetts Bay Colony founded the University in 1636. However, John Harvard does have the honor of being the University’s first major benefactor.

For visitors (and maybe first-time students), it could very well be the welcome attraction to Harvard University. Its hard to miss as you enter the university from Johnston Gate, especially with the all the people waiting to take photos. You will have 2 precious seconds to snap a photo without anyone in it so be quick to click.

Oh its the best. So good I left a five star review. The courtyard is actually quite nice to sit and people watch and see future billionaires or dropouts who will become billionaires.
You can feel he is still there to bless you
I couldnt get a proper look at the statue because of the tourists and their selfie sticks. Its a lovely green area though especially in autumn/the fall.
Lol touched the guys shoe.
It was great to visit this statue again.
A place, where u are feel privileged to be there...
Feel his feet for good luck! And know there’s always a line to get pics. This not John Harvard as well.. you know nothing is really true after many many years
The current location of the statue is on the west side of Harvard Yards University Hall, facing Harvard Hall, Massachusetts Hall, & the Johnston Gate. Many Summer School students & their parents were gathered round the legendary statue snapping photos as they arrived on campus last week.
Excellent place to visit. Amazed while being there.
Statue to remembering Harvard founder. Many people came here to take picture and especially rubbing the left statue shoes.
Recomended
Feel his feet for good luck! And know there’s always a line to get pics.
Its Harvard whats not to like. Cool location with lots of history
You rub the toe. You bask in its glory. Soak up the knowledge and wisdom that surrounds you.
As you must know, the statue isnt really of John Harvard, but its pretty popular. Most tourists touch the toe of the statues boot which has caused it to be bright and shiny. Thats done for luck. My daughter touched it a year ago and now as a High School student shes managed to get to their summer program with some fundraising and some scholarship money. Its a must see at Harvard. Lots of history.
Harvard students make this place so vibrant and full of energy.
Harvards art is an endearing mishmash. While not as consistently architecturally pretty as Yale, the campus has a large amount of beauty and historical significance squirreled away into pockets throughout the campus.
Very pretty site! I like the statue and it gives you good luck for free lol!
Don’t forget to rub the shoe!
Inspiring for further studies..
Solid
What’s up with the shoe?
John Harvard (1607-1638) was the founder of Harvard College.
Too many Chinese were there, so I wasnt able to touch the foot.
Harvard yard was closed for visitors for a reunion for the 2018 memorial day weekend. It might be a good idea to check on such things before planning a visit to the university
No review necessary. The legendary statue in lively Harvard campus. a must see place if you are visiting Boston or Cambridge.
Most visited place. I was told this statue is not John Harvards.
The legend said that if someone toughs his foot he or she will one day will have a chance studying at Harvard.
Ensure you touch the statute for good luck.
We took a photo here! Many people waited it.
You can breathe knowledge
I touched it.
A step down from Oxford
Would be cooler if it werent all a lie
While this statue might seem overhyped and isnt actually of John Harvard you might as well visit it and take a selfie when youre visiting the world famous Harvard University. A continual stream of tourists stop by it on a daily basis.
Just walk around. Beautiful place.
Obviously a place to stop and get at least one photo
People are crazy on the statue.
Overrated! Was full of visitors taking pictures while holding his feet. Didnt find any historic description of the person or the statue around. Maybe the tourists covered that up too.
Historic statue
One of the tourist attractions in Harvard campus
Believe it or not, just touch his left shoe for good luck!
Remember to touch his right foot.
A fun landmark with an interesting history.
