An interesting small local museum in the old county jail. Not expensive to visit and easy parking out front. Lots of jail history exhibits but also lots of pioneer history. A few things kids can touch so great for families. Run by volunteers and self supported. Great bookstore with lots of local history as well as western, cowboy and Yellowstone. They also have Montana cookbooks.
There is a lot packed in to this wonderful museum. You gotta watch out though it is easy to lose track of time theres a lot covered. It honestly has been one of the most interesting museums I have been to. It was not expected i mean there was a log cabin inside the museum that was packed full of everything you would have seen back then to every kind of Indian artifact to a still for making moonshine. And yes if I ever get the chance to visit the beautiful city of Bozeman Montana in the rocky mountains again which Im hoping to then I would most definitely have to go threw the Gallatin History Museum again and see what I missed the first go around... oh and last but definitely not the least the staff were very friendly, welcoming, knowledgeable, and easily approachable if and when I had any questions.
Being from Three Forks, I thought the GHM would be comprised of information I was familiar with. That was not the case by any means! Really interesting content, we enjoyed our time spent here.
Awesome tour guide! Very knowledgeable of the history of Gallatin county and the history of the building the museum is housed in. Amazing artifacts on display! Absolutely intriguing to see the actual jail cells, gallows, and read of the criminal justice activities in the newspapers just as everyone read them over a century ago. Well worth the time and entrance fee, especially since allowed to wander at leisure after the tour. Antique items galore on display!
A great place to learn about some local history of the town. They have some interactive items that the kids seem to enjoy especially the jail cell. The staff is very helpful & its bigger than you would think looking at it from the outside.
The place was closed mid day on a Wednesday
Definitely worth a stop and the $7 admission! The staff take you around for a brief guided tour to give and then let you explore more on your own. I really liked that because it’s nice to have some inside info but you don’t necessarily want to be on a two hour tour. It was about 40 minutes or so, depending on how many questions. Then spent another ~hour checking the rest of the place out. They had some old world war 1 items which were really neat.
My kids and I LOVE this place. It has so many interesting things inside and so much fascinating history of the Gallatin Valley. They usually organize super fun days for kids on the weekends to learn about things such as the railroad, native American history, and different eras. The staff is extremes knowledgeable and so fun to listen as they tell stories. Its such an engaging adventure every time we visit!
Nice, friendly, and helpful staff. Fun exhibits with interesting local stories.
Great little tidbits of info and pictures of the history of the Gallatin Valley.
Was in town for work researching a building. The staff was extremely helpful and nice. They have a great local archive and knowledgeable staff.
Fairly small, maybe take an hours visit. Some interesting history of the area
I didnt know how much content was in the museum. I spent over an hour and didnt finish the 1st floor.A knowledgeable guide started me off and then let me roam. Many of the stations are tactile & encourage interactivity. There is also a good book store with many local authors represented. The staff was very helpful here and answered a lot of my questions.I didnt explore the library, but it was surprisingly large.A fantastic value & a good time.
Nice little museum in town with super friendly staff.
What is there to say?? Thank you for preserving our local history!!
Very interesting! Can see that a lot of work and research was performed.
What a wonderful Museum to bring family and learn about historic events. The other day they were specializing in the hundredth anniversary of the signing of the Armistice for World War. And they had an amazing hands on event for the whole family for children especially
I often take guests here when they are visiting. The museum is fascinating and fun for all ages. It makes for a great afternoon! My boys especially like pretending to be prisoners in the cells which are still accessible.
They had a great series of events for Armistice day and amazing local history.
A very well organized museum with interesting displays about the area and the buildings former glory as a jail.
Lots of history. Local guide had some amazing stories.
Really cool little museum that has plenty of interesting history on the building alone. I am glad we stopped here with our limited time in Bozeman.
Interesting and friendly front desk
Very interesting & educational display of western frontier as well as those responsible for its discovery & resultant claims thereto.
