The riverine ecosystem at the trailhead is beautiful. Beyond, trails are in good shape. Beautiful vistas. Lower areas are pretty hot and arid, without shade, so bring water for even a short hike.

Wonderful trails for all ages and skills. Could use a bit better signage at the tops of the mountains, but the views and company make up for that.

Nice walking trail. Easy access from nearby neighborhoods. If you do not live in Boulder County you need to buy a parking pass. It also gets busy so plan ahead.

Bring $5 to park and a pen. Very busy. Mesa portion is hot and sunny in summer. Homestead trail more shaded. Fair amount of parking.

This place is a gem! The city of Boulder is to be commended for how great theyve kept this place. But get there early as the parking lots are small and fill up quickly.

The South Mesa Trailhead offers several multi use trails through the gorgeous surroundings of the base of the Flatirons. It is interconnected with several other trail heads and access into El Dorado state park. The paths are well maintained, there are plenty of map markers, and indicators of the levels of muddiness to various branches of the paths. Boulder maintains a high tech and up to date website with clear and easy to navigate information on trail closures that even puts the neighboring state park to shame. The only reason that I keep one of my stars is because of the difficulty related to the parking fee. The website warns of a fee but doesnt say how much it is or what the payment options are. It turns out an archaic method of dropping a cash payment into a drop box with the carbon copy of your own handwritten parking pass is the only option. If youre willing to spend so much money on the website and maintaining the open space with various mud indicators why not put a card operated parking meter in as well? Im sure youre missing revenue from cashless people expecting an easier way to pay.

Lots of dogs and people, so if your dogs dont get along with others then dont bring them. Dog s**t everywhere. Thanks d**kheads. Learn to be responsible before society has to take care of you. Overall, the trail is nice. Sumac thickets near the start of the trail, some ponderosa pines along the hillsides, lots of trail options and offshoots. This is a very nice little Park located outside of Denver where a lot of people like to go jog bicycle and even ride horses. Has beautiful views of the Front Range and a large part of the trail system could actually be navigated from a wheelchair. My only negative is the fact that all of a sudden all of these little parks in and around Colorado have now gone to anywhere from a $5 to as much as a $15 day-use fee,, undermining my whole idea of a park and maybe having a donation box instead. Colorado has built up over a Billion dollars in surplus money from Recreational(marijuana) usage why not spend part of that on your park system.

Mesa Trail is not as extreme as the description makes it sound. If you begin at the Eldorado trailhead off of highway 93 & Eldo Spgs Dr., it is mostly open meadow and will be pretty hot and exposed in the summer, which is better for spring and fall when you want to warm up a bit by the sun. Hike as much or as little of it as youd like. This area is good for older people who need less steep terrain and for running. If you approach the trail from Chautauqua, it is a short ascent through the open meadow, then you get into the forest and can take the Mesa trail accross the front of the foothills without much more elevation gain. It is one of the most mellow portions of Boulders hiking system, very beautiful, and lots of options to add on additional portions of trail to your hike.
