So glad we decided to visit. This trip to Georges Island was not initially in our plan when we came to Boston. However, we were looking for an opportunity to get out on the water a bit but the longer cruises didnt really interest us. This trip is about 45 minutes each way on the ferry. We had 2 hours on the island to explore before the ferry returned. Free tours of the fort are offered and our guide was excellent. She was knowledgeable and entertaining. She was also very good with our inquisitive son! We did not, but you could take a picnic to enjoy, there are very nice shelters with tables. There is also a nice, sheltered refreshment stand with basics like burgers, fries and drinks.
What a nice place! Very historical, you need to go to the Visitors center to learn more about the place and to see old items from the civil war and the second war eras.It was so dark inside some of the part of the fort that you need a flashlight to walk safely.I got scares a few times, but I cant tell if it was because of the dark and the ghost of the lady in black of because of all the kids screaming around.
Besides being massively attacked by mosquitos, had a good time exploring the fort. Definite improvements have been made since I last explored it 10 years ago. There are still however many super dark areas you need a flashlight to get through. Recommendations: bring a flashlight and Deet-infused bug spray. Natural bug spray only attracted them.
Great place to explore w the family. Dont forget a picnic lunch. Bathrooms available. Nice views, really cool if youre into American history
Great place to explore a piece of Boston history. It is worth taking a tour with a guide. Stairs to the ramparts do not have hand rails. That part not recommended for small children
Loved this place. Boat cruise cost $20 round trip and we had plenty of time to walk around the island. They had free guided tours. 3 options for guided tours which took you to different parts. Staff there are very friendly. Unique items at the gift shop and visitor center. Fort Warren is built uniquely and has a lot of unique views.
Still love this trip!Used to be better, but theyve closed off many interesting areas. Granted due to safety concerns, its just not as good as it used to be.
This place is SUCH a good price for a great experience. Round trip ferry ride gives you great views of Boston and the harbor. Then, the fort itself is wonderful to explore, even with kids. There are places to picnic and bathrooms as well. I went two weekends in a row!
Awesome place to tramp around and explore with kids, bring a picnic or your portable grill and enjoy the lawns and salty air! You can walk all around and on top of the roof, and even inside many parts of the old fort. This is the main attraction of Georges Island, of course.
A ton of fun with a friend from my childhood
Great place to visit and the ranger guided talk was excellent!
While the process of getting here was stressful (ticket agents who almost didn’t let us off the boat after we did what the website told us to do for tickets, and who gave us a hard time about it), the fort was really fun to explore. The lack of interpretation signage was actually kind of fun, because we had to figure out what things were. It’s too bad it’s so dilapidated.
We have a 3yr old, 5yr old and 6yr old. We were camping on Peddocks island and took a day trip over to Georges. There is so much for the kids to explore, stairs to new parts of the fort, rooms, fields...I could go on. After 1130am there is a snack shack open, but it is limited. The rangers are knowledgeable and engaging. The junior ranger program is great for kids and gives them tasks to focus on. There are plenty of picnic areas around and places to stop and sit. There is a playground for the kids right off the dock. This is on my top 10 places to take the kids!
Interesting place with a lot of old military fortifications still in place. Worth a look.
Georges Island and its Fort Warren are a beautifully kept walking historical lesson. The rangers are super friendly and helpful and the museum is eye opening
One of the coolest places in Boston. My wife and I go there every summer on the anniversary of our first date which was there.
Great place to explore
I mean, yes. A 50-minute boat ride takes you out to Georges Island and its fort? Whats not to like? Kids love it, in summertime there are tons of concerts and events, and it give you a different kind of experience in Boston. We do this every year or two and its always fun. Take the T to Aquarium and then walk up to the kiosk to buy the tickets.
Nice Island very historical and a good place to have a picnic.
Come experience the awesome Fort Warren on Georges Island. Snack bar has great lunch sandwhiches. Please remember to take your trash with you this is how the islands are clean.
A great place to visit. Even though it is close to the city it seems so far away.
Nice views of the city and all around. But there wasnt much rythm to the visit in the fort. Others followed a guide, but told me he wasnt saying much. The ferry is 50min from Boston. I spent 2h20 on George island, it was ample time to visit, but not sit down & eat.
Good island for a walk and learning history. Pro tip: take the T! Much faster boats
50 minute ferry ride makes for an enjoyable ride and picture ops. The fort is great to go through but enhanced a lot with ranger tours that are 11:15, 1:15 and 3:15. He was excellent explaining history, telling stories and even the lady in black ghost story. Sites in the fort are so cool to see and do the dark hallway walk. There is a hide gem to you want to crawl through window. In front of fort to the right and behind visitor center go up wooden stairs and crawl through. No other area like it and lift the wooden door. Must do and i would again.
When you visit be sure to ask about the Lady in Black who was hanged and haunts the fort.Spent the night there with a Civil War re-enactment group once.
This place is super cool. Its bigger than you think and takes quite a while to walk around. Great for exploring with kids. Next time I plan on taking a tour to learn more about it. Only downside is the ferry schedule is pretty confusing. Theyre two different ferries the MBTA and Boston Harbor Cruises make sure you check both schedules.
Fort warren has a lot of grass and a beach where I took a picnic
Field trip fun!!! An amazing day!
Really cool. During the summer you can go to other island directly otherwise it is only two islands. Its MASSIVE; very historic. Watch for the lady in black!
Interesting piece of history but surprisingly I found myself a bit tired and bored.
The guy with long blond hair whos name i think was Brian was really dope and deserves a raise
Never forget the individuals who served here.
Lovely tour
Didn’t realize forts are so boring. I never want to be in military now.
Such a wonderfully preserved piece of History. The ferry ride over takes a little over the half hour but its well worth it. The Civil War era fort was mostly used as a prisoner of war camp and held some of the wars most prominent Confederates.
Has changed a lot since 1993 but still a great time.
Dont be afraid to explore all the nooks and crannies of the fort. Very interesting place!
Try a Fall visit here! Peaceful and enjoyable.
Really interesting place to stroll and visit a piece of history
Great place for a holiday or Sunday during the summer.
Lots to walk around and see. Several great views of Boston.
So cool. Must see.
Fort Warren and Georges Island were like magic when I was a kid. I still remember hearing tales about secret tunnels under the harbor that were dug to detonate warships. Take your kids and let their imaginations run wild.
Interesting place to walk around, but the playground is a bit awkward.
Loved the history and setting in the harbour Islands
Awesome being able to walk thru all the tunnels, rooms, and walkways throughout the fort. Sad to see the fort deteriorating, and wish there were better upkeep plus exhibits.
Loved Georges Island ! Beautiful views of the harbor, cool fort, and just a nice place to spend a day!
It was super interesting. What a nice Sunday outing for the family.
Beautiful island with a fort and lovely views
Fantastic place to visit with the Kids - let them loose and listen to the many, many questions theyll undoubtedly pose.
Fascinating island fortress.
