Dont miss this place if youre around Bend!! It is soooo cool. the Big Obsidian Flow Trail is incredible. You walk up a couple flights of stairs and theres a super short loop trail on top of the volcanic flow of black obsidian glass gleaming in the sunlight. You can also take a long, somewhat bumpy ride up to Paulina Peak for an incredible view. There are also some lovely lakes at Newberry National Volcanic Monument and Paulina Lake has hot springs on the far side, which are about a 2mi hike round trip, I believe. The hot springs are dug out of the sand and generally very shallow but you can dig them out a bit more. They vary in temperature and have little bugs all over the surface but were still pretty nice with a gorgeous view and you can alternate hot and cold with the lake. There is also a waterfall called Paulina Falls that is a really short hike but we havent checked it out yet. I have heard that the lava beds area is cool as well.

The place will leave you in awe. From the parking lot you will be tempted to climb up the Cinder. No need, there is a paved trail all the way up to a view point where you can see the Sister Mountains, Mt Bachelor, Broken Top, and others in the distance. Start at the monument where Lava Butte is. Then after you are done there, drive South to Paulina Lake where there is an Obsidian Flow and a hot spring. Any place you visit is awesome. Photos are from Lava Butte and the cinder flow from it.

Wonderful place to visit. Came here during the of season in Sept 2019. Took our time walking through the exhibit room at the base of the cinder cone. Explored some of the trails around the area. The top of the cinder cone was great. The view was amazing and extensive. The hike around the rim was nice. Lots to read and see. Get there early and get your pass to drive up to the top of the cinder cone it’s well worth it.

Ba
Review №5

Beware, the gate to the cinder cone is closed, so youll have to hike 30 mins on a paved road to get there. Its gently sloped so it isnt hard, but it doesnt allow for a quick visit. The Obsedian a little drive more south is an absolute must. We did it during sunset and nobody was there which made for a great experience.

The views are spectacular! Worth the $2 shuttle ride (runs every 20 min). Walk the rim & talk with the ranger- they are super smart & friendly. 20 minutes between shuttle drop off & pick up is really all you need to see it all.

Great spot to stop and walk around! Beautiful and unique area with a great view of bachelor and the three sisters. Very clean and had great infographics along the trails. Saw chipmunks, ground squirrels, and a sagebrush lizard! Spent about an hour and a half here. I would highly recommend!

Im surprised this place isnt designated a National Park. Waterfalls, Cinder Cones, Lava Beds, Lakes... So much to explore. This monument is managed by the US Forest. Visitor center is well done with informational exhibits and video. This monument is broken into 2 areas. Cinder Cones/Lava Bed/Cave & Newberry Caldera with lakes and camping. Google Map takes you to the Visitor Center near Cinder Cone. This is where I learned so much about this place... Your America the Beautiful pass lets you in for free.

One of the most amazing breathtaking views I have ever seen. The drive up to the Paulina peak was terrifying as I am scared of heights, but extremely worth it. You can see so many mountains, hills and lakes from the peak. We also went down to Paulina Lake which was very pretty but looked like it was mainly a boating attractions so didn’t spend much time there except a short walk. The water in the lake is super clear though which was cool.

Really great monument. The visitors center explains the history and geology of the area quite well. There are many biking and hiking trails in some of the most beautiful scenery in Oregon.I wanted to just pull over and build a cabin and never leave. The wife was not too keen on that idea but hey, a man can dream right? The summit of Lava Butte offers some amazing views but can be a bit windy.

I thoroughly enjoyed this diverse national monument run by the forest service. There was a surprisingly diverse amount of things to do here including the lava cave, lava butte, and the newberry Caldera itself. If you are short on time, skip the cave and just go to Paulina Lake area inside of the caldera. You can check out an unbelievable obsidian flow, multiple lakes, and the beautiful Paulina Falls. There is a trail around the whole caldera if you have time, and it’s not even too strenuous.

This is a cool place to spend about 2 hours. Visited here after visiting Crater Lake so the water was not as beautiful, but it was neat to see all the impacts of a volcanic explosion. This is also a good place if you want to see a lot, but not have to do a lot of hiking. We drove to multiple stops and then just took less than 0.5mi round trip hikes.

You can get a annual forest pass for $30 at bi-mart or a america the beautiful pass ($80) that covers all places including crater lake (which now charges $15 a car! ).

Newberry National Volcanic Monument is a wonderful place to explore. It is actually many places and there are many different activities. You can get outside and explore different area by foot or by bike. The whole complex can be part of a several day long adventure. The Newberry Monument extends many miles north and south between Bend and Chemult, OR. Lava fields and volcano-formed lakes represent the signature views of this monument, telling the tale of the old Newberry Volcano from Oregons past. Its best to start at the Lava Lands Visitor Center, which has a wonderful interpretive museum describing the volcanic history of the region and how the land was reshaped as a result of the volcano. Hikes from the visitor center can take you through the miles-wide lava fields or up to the top of Lava Butte, an old cinder cone that sits next to the visitor center. A shuttle bus also goes to the top of the cone where a fire watchtower keeps vigilant eyes on the nearby forests.Just south of the visitor center is the Lava River Cave, a deep cave system that is open for exploring. Make sure you start your explorations before 3 or 4pm, as rangers close the gates at 4:30.Even further south of the visitors center on Highway 97 are lakes that were formed by the volcano. The Newberry Caldera lakes are beautiful and worth a stop, although they take a bit longer to get to from the highway than the visitor center. For anyone interested in volcanic history, or for anyone who wants to see some unique geologic features in Central Oregon, this is a must-stop national monument!
