A super fun adventure thats not too far out of the way! We visited for a supplemental field trip for my 5 year old daughter. She loved it! We turned back before the area where you have to climb and then army crawl. We are still building our cave exploring confidence. We will be back another time to visit this cave and more of the lava tubes near Bend!
Very nice. Just bring the equipment. Dont be like me and my friends whos use our phones for flashlights and halfway in...our phones starts to die ... Excited but it was fun.
Dont take low clearance vehicle. SUV best. Well built steep metal steps to cave floor. Cool place to be on hot days.
A little cold even in hot weather, so taking a sweater wouldnt hurt. Also some flashlights can be very useful
Careful to always take care of the local caves and areas because we don’t want them to get closed off to the public or mistreated! Don’t leave and garbage in or around the cave! This cave is a favorite of mine. Easy and fun, and a good introduction to people who are not super experienced in caving. Toward the end there is some army crawling if you want to get to the fun little end.
Its a cool, free adventure underground that is open all year and is easy to get to. It is pitch black, so bring adequate lighting tools. If you plan to make it all the way, you will be either hunched over, crawling, and even some climbing at certain points. The floor is mostly sand, so crawling isnt usually painful. Just watch your head! Unfortunately, parts of the cave have been vandalized with spray paint and bottles. But most of the cave is intact. If coming from Bend, there is a small sign on your left just before the road turns to gravel. When you take the turn, the road turns to rough rock and dirt. Some may want to park and walk. But once youre there, its just a set of stairs that take you down a dark hole in the ground.Bats do reside here, though we only came across one. If you plan on visiting other caves, be sure to change footwear between them to prevent the spread of disease.
Visited this place three different times during my stay in Bend. Amazing views outside the cave as well.
Just be careful when going into the deeper parts can get a lil rocky I got a pretty mean cut but overall absolutely amazing such a cool place to explore
Very dark buy head lamps or very good flash lights very cold
Bring a headlamp for each person. The path is pretty rough at times. Did not go through the near 2000 feet that I read it was in lenght. Definately have a full charge on phone for phone . Very dark!
This cave was awesome. Bring a jacket and a flashlight
Very cool (figuratively and literally)Goes back pretty far, too.
Really cool place.. cave is very cold and dark
Cold down there. Really cool place though. Sweatshirt and flashlight absolutely necessary.
Kind of scary to go in for the first time alone, but a pretty basic cave/lava tube. Fun, cool, hope to go back and take my kids.
Great little spot for a walk. Bring a jacket.
I had a great time was a little nervous about the fractures in the ceiling, but none the less it was a great adventure
Its was awesome
Amazing cave,,easy entrance
Stopped here while driving from Bend, Oregon to California. The cave is amazing but be sure to bring a flash light and sensible shoes! The stairs are a bit narrow to walk down but are fairly easy thanks to the handrails. Once in the cave there is a good distance that can be easily walked by those that are a bit unsteady on their feet. If you are feeling adventurous you can explore further into the cave (lava tube); as you go further in the cave ins become more prevalent and the walking becomes more climbing. The road to Boyd Cave is a bit rough but can be done in a 2 wheel drive vehicle (at least when its not raining/snowing). If you have 4WD you can take some side trails along the way to add to your adventure.
Super fun! If you like crawling on the ground in the dark! Which I do, bring lights and wear pants and a sweater, also it does not loop so you go in and come out the same way.
This was a great first cave for the kids. Even as an adult it is fun! One small area that has you on hands and knees then farther back a belly crawl. Otherwise its tall and open and easy to walk down.
One of the few caves open in off season. Easy to find with GPS. Easy access from your car.
Easy access with fairly level ground. Bring at least one flash light per person and watch your step.
Very cool place
Not too much to look at, but bring flashlights for the long tunnel journey
Self-guided caving isnt for everyone, but this venue is very accommodating, all things considered. Bring a headlamp to avoid banging your head on numerous low ceiling points. And make sure every spelunker has their own light.
This place was awesome, but very understated. Learned a lot about white nose syndrome in bats from info provided there as well.
A nice cool place.
Fun to explore! Bring a head lamp.
Really cool cave, went about1/2 mile in before we couldnt go any further.
Great alternative to the Lava River Cave
Certainly not kid friendly but a great place to visit. We brought our two teens and toddler and recommend only bringing children who are steady on there feet. Portions of the cave require you to crawl and the footing is loose and and rugged. I recommend this highly but bring a flashlight and probably better for kids 6 + years of age.
Great walk if youre not claustrophobic! Lots of graffiti once you get in a ways. Bring lights and leave your dogs at home!
Great cave! Ive been hiking it every year for the last 11 years. Great for little kids too. Dress warm and bring extra batteries for the head lamps.
This place is great. I didnt find it difficult to walk around, even though there were a few spots where stuff had caved in. But it was such a cool experience and absolutely worth going to.
Great place to see.
Fun my dog loves it bring plenty of lights
Checked this place out last week and its pretty awesome. I went with a friend, cause you really should not go alone. We hiked down the Lava tube for a good half mile. It gets really narrow and short in certain places, so be ready to get dirty and crawl pretty low if you want to make it to the end. Definitely worth checking out even if you dont travel down the tube. Just going down the stairs into the tube is pretty cool all by itself.
Not a maintained cave. Let someone know where you will be.
A toddler could walk this cave. Families enjoy!
Great place to explore. Easily accessible via a metal stairs and inside is dry, even on a wet day outside.
Was just there today and was there 2 years ago. If ya havent seen a real bat cave you should check it out.
Easy cave, usually a couple cars in the lot.
Really cool place to bring the kids. Make sure you bring a flash light. There is no lighting in the cave. And a jacket too. Its about 20 degrees cooler inside the cave during the winter months.
We LOVED this place! So so much fun! Bring a sweatshirt/ jacket. Temp drops to around 45°. Flashlight/headlamp is a must. Defentitly coming back here!
Easy to get to dope af . sweet place to dab on the ole pen or smoke a j
Beautiful place
This is on the east side of bend off China Hat Rd. We did a 9 mile bike loop by combining a portion of the Coyote Loop Trail, the Boyd Cave cut over, and the Arnold Ice Cave Trail. We parked at the Horse Butte trail head and road clockwise on the loop. Midway through the ride we arrived at Boyd Cave and explored the underground cave via headlamps. The trail was a great bike ride some challenging terrain and fun . The Boyd Cave was a cool (literally) underground cave reached by a ladder. The cave sits in the middle of nowhere and could be easy to miss. We didnt find the Arnold Ice Cave, we will have to save that for another trip!
Scary but exhilarating!
Lots of fun.I went to the end with my 12 year old.Took about an hour total.Lots of ducking crawling and climbing boulders.Bring flash lights and sweaters.
Awesome cave to go have an adventure in. Cold down inside of it and very dark. Bring a good flashlight with you. Going to go back for sure!
Great trip with the kids
Super cool and clean lava tube. Easy to find, no worries for beginning spelunkers.
Great experience and very need cave. We were on a tour with Wanderlust Tours and they explained the geology very well.
Beautiful Sunset, nice evening with my husband
An adventure in the caves without any help. Bring flashlights, helmets, knee pads. Not nessarcy but helps. Flashlights are a must. Not for faint of heart.
Really cool lava tube. Not hard to navigate.
If you like caves this one is easy and fun, great little crawl towards the end.
Nice to see. Warning dogs not allowed.
Awesome place
Free and neat
Such a cool spot for a photo shoot!!
Bring a flashlight and explore the cave on your own.
Always awesome and free!
Its a sweet place take water
Under the proper lighting conditions, the entrance to this cave can be very neat.
Just make sure you bring warm clothes!
Had a good time. Very interesting
Great hiking/spelunking
