Took my 2 girls at the end of Sept and had a great time. They are 2 & 4. We were able to completely social distance because of Covid concerns even though it was a Saturday. My girls especially loved the rides outside. Highly recommend. Plenty of space for a stroller, benches and picnic tables for lunches outside while there with kids. We really enjoyed ourselves.
My second time at the B&O Railroad Museum. This place doesnt disappoint. Its interesting at every corner. The history of the railroad in Maryland is presented beautifully and entertainingly. Fun location for children and adults. If you are in a hurry, you can do most of the exhibits in a little over an hour. If you are interested in seeing everything, make sure you arrive with at least 2 hours to spare.
The museum was clean and will maintained! The staff was SUPER friendly and kind. They had a lot of trains to see. The roundhouse is beautiful! There was a kids section with toy trains, books, and games. 3/4 of the kids rides outside were shut down some with the outdoor model train garden. We took the 25 minute train ride. The ride itself was nice and fun for our kids who have not been on a train before. The view from that train ride was not what i was expecting. It was not scenic at all. Overall it was a nice visit!
Took my kids to B and O yesterday. They had a great time. Staff were very nice and helpful. Very patient and informative for my sons hundreds of questions. We tried to get there by 1 to go on train ride. We came to late so missed it. @ the end kids had a great time anyway. Its a nice local non expensive day trip.
Wonderful museum. Even though we are past the age of trains, they are still impressive. Baltimore and this museum were the beginning of trains in the US. The round house where trains were turned around is a magnificent building. There are train engines here from the very earliest days when it looked like a boiler on a cart. The earliest passenger cars look more like converted stage coaches. There are a number of trains from the Civil War era and more. You can also take a ride on an old train if you schedule it. Kids will love that and also being able to go on the old trains. Some you can walk through and others you can only look at.Ask them to tell you the story about when half the roof collapsed when we had 4 feet of snow a few years back. The place looks better than ever. The staff is wonderful and is very knowledgeable. They held an art competition for local artists to paint the trains and some picturesque train stations in the area. Some of the photos reflect that.
I definitely recommend the B&O Railroad Museum. Took the family today. (2 year old and a baby in a stroller) There are so many trains and there is so much space to run around that my 2 year old didnt know what to do with himself. Just being able to look at the massive engines was awesome but you could go in some of them as well.Theres also a lot of model trains set up everywhere, kids creation station, carousel and an outdoor play area with picnic tables.Staff was friendly and the museum is clean and easy to navigate, even with a stroller.
Who doesnt love trains? The museum is a fun place with a lot of great information about the history of trains. They have some of the earliest trains built in the us. One is the Tom Thumb which is tiny. Some of the early railroad cars they have look more like a stage coach than a train car. There is a lot of in about trains during the Civil War period. You can go on a number of trains. The engine in one of the pictures was used in the movie the Wild Wild West with Will Smith. At times you can also take a train ride on an old train.
An excellent venture into railway history. Plenty of historical trains and wagons. The train ride was nice too.
Loved all of the history and they have an AWESOME new Farmers Market on Wednesdays from 3-7 with grab and go foods, fresh produce, etc. Win!!
You think youre taking your kids to have fun and enjoy but youll end up as excited as them. Amazing place!!!
It was very good. Theres a lot of history.
Beautiful museum. Nice displays. Not just for adults but kids also. Docents were very helpful. Highly recommend.
We rode the train out to the pumpkin patch and returned to the station to color the s and play games. Great day, thank you to the B&O staff.
Plan on spending the day, take the tours and learn more about trains than you ever wanted to know. ( I mean that in a good way.) Loved my 5 hours there today explore the gilded age of train travel.
Really nice museum with many high quality and well maintained displays. Adding on to your ticket for the train ride is cool and worth it as well. First class tickets will get you in a more comfortable car with a snack and beverage, but its $10 versus $3 for a ride in the regular car. Overall, the museum is definitely worth a visit!
Suprising was able to spend over an hour and half there. Was recently reopened so possibly why not much when I was there.
Great museum with so many different types of locomotives and cars. Its really amazing to see all of the ones that have been restored and kept, as well as the historic Roundhouse. I wish they had a few more activities for kids, but theres really a ton of things to see. My son loves the HO scale displays, and the outdoor model trains.
Be sure to be there by 3pm or a tour is not possible. However, you can still check out the wide range of rail cars and engines outside the museum. There are a couple centuries of cars represented and from a couple different lines B&O, C&O, Maryland and Phillidelphia. It looks as though the cars are traded out from time to time in order for others to be seen.
Active duty gets in for free. They have a play place for kids. Its well kept and full of history. Would definitely recommend to the highest if you ever visit Baltimore just like I did.
We loved this place. Great railroad history on display. We spent 3 hours here.
A lot to see. Overall good place but bathrooms are gender neutral. They have like 8 stalls in the bathroom. If they are going to be Gender neutral at least close the gaps in the bathroom stall so people cant see in the stall while using the bathroom. Will not return for this reason.
Always something to see. Today was farmers market. Very nice. Small but variety.
This place was amazing and had great history stories to go along with it. They have plenty of trains to view and even trains that you can walk on. A nice kids play area. We also went on a train ride and the conductors were great. I was shocked to see how clean their restrooms are and that they have a nursing station set aside for nursing mothers. Great experience and we will definitely be back.
We had so much fun!! Between the trains, being able to get on most of them and explore and the train history museum with the history of clocks and communication we were never bored. Theres plenty to do inside and outside as well. Perfect family day
Definitely a very cool museum to visit if youre interested in railroads/trains, especially steam engines. They have a large collection of steam engines throughout the museum to check out and see the evolution of these engineering marvels. The museum also does a great job detailing the history of railroads and society, particularly surrounding the Civil War and World War I (it should be noted that they are doing a special exhibition on WWI now).Just as a side note, if you are more interested in diesel/electric engines (as I am), I think the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania may be a better fit...but I still would recommend checking out the B&O Museum. I easily spent 3 hours here and it was a great experience.
Awesome place for kids. Very educational
Great place to see the oldest railroad in the U.S. Get a history lesson and see trains.
One of the best railroad museums in the country. It has a very significant and well curated collection and provides great interpretation around it.Plus they have the only currently restored operable Conrail locomotive in the world.
Went for the S scale train garden on Sat and Sun. Met some good people and joined the club that did the display that weekend. Tree in the center of the round house was nice so I snapped a couple shots. Kids were having fun seeing all the trains, pointing and running about in the open space of the round house.
Took our train obsessed son here last week and he was in heaven and I was amazed at how beautiful the inside of the roundhouse was. Everything was immaculate, informative, and welcoming. They give you a cool paper for your child to find stamps around the museum and get a small prize at the end. Tons of kids activities indoors, play area outside with carousel. We had a really nice time.
Look for coupons online, but at Christmas time this is one of Baltimore’s best and affordable attractions. The holiday trains and $6 rides with Santa make adults and kids feel the spirit of the season. The roundhouse has been beautifully restored and highlights Baltimore’s railroad history. PARKING ONSITE TOO!
Very fun place to take kids and see the history of trains!
The B&O Railroad Museum is awesome. Its fun and interactive. They have things to do and see for all ages. The train ride was awesome as well. The staff is great, theyre friendly and helpful. I would definitely recommend this place. Im not sure if there is a place to eat inside, but I do know there are snacks and beverages served on the train, a gift shop, and a good amount of bathrooms as well.
Lots of open space and not many people. The trains were a lot of fun
Very cool museum. Certainly worth going if you like history.
We had a wonderful visit to the B&O Train Museum. We are Maryland Zoo members, so we used the reciprocal special for this month to visit the train museum for free! My son will be 2 next month and he loved the toddler play area and the carousel ride! We are looking forward to future visits!
My son’s favorite museum! A rich and informative collection of the history. We were lucky to visit the museum to join the turntable show and had a lot of fun. They should definitely put more turntable show on their schedule, that’s not something you will normally see in other places.
Great train museum, lots of train cars, model trains etc, can even take a ride on the train...I didnt have time to do that
Iconic museum and site in Baltimore. Rich in history, interactive exhibits, 100% fun and intrigue for everyone. It brings the history of the railway in America to life.
Beautiful museum. We have gone several times for their polar express and ride with Thomas. My kids love it and there is so much to do. They have many old trains for the kids to explore as well as a kids section. They always have different events going on. If you love trains this place is a must see!
Always loved going to the B&O. Havent been in years, finally had a grandbaby and went back. It was just as I remembered! The only thing I was uncomfortable with this time was the gender neutral bathrooms. I think it would be fine if it was one stall, but it is both bathrooms that were originally Male and female. It made me feel uncomfortable, but I guess this is something we all need to adjust to.
Magnificent, must see for any rail fan. Clearly the most comphrehensive vintage rail museum in the world! I felt compelled to become a member! You will too! Pictures dont do it justice, a must see in person!
Comprehensive collection in a beautiful building, and a great piece of US history. BUT, too much look and not enough touch. If you arent a knowledgable train aficionado then the main displays are sorely lacking in context and information, and it all just blurs together. The $2 train ride (only once per day) is worth the cost, but appears to have last been cleaned in the steam-engine era. Smithsonian model train collection, dining car history, and B&O historical information all well done. Free parking onsite.
Lots of fun things to do with the kids. Kids loved seeing the different trains and also it was fascinating for adults to see the old trains and carriages and how we have evolved from these huge machines to tiny sleek machines. Loved the Allegheny engine and how massive it was. Lots of activities for the kids to explore about trains too. There was a short train ride too that the kids loved it.
Great place for getting about the history of trains. There were a lot of interactive exhibits. Lots of fun for children, but entertaining for adults too! Accommodating staff, dont forget to ask questions. These people know everything about trains.
This is a great place to see the old steam and diesel trains.
Good fun for the kids. Very helpful staff, dont forget to ask questions. These guys know everything about trains.Beautiful building, visually stunning in late afternoon.
I really enjoy taking my 6 and 4 year old to B&O. Its a great way to spend time together as a family and learn a little about history. The reciprocal Zoo membership during January and February is a life and money saver. Highly recommend this for families and anyone interested in trains. But be sure to explore all the exhibits or you might miss the best ones hidden in the back.
You can also take a 1-mile out and 1-mile back train ride on a real train, but because the train is basically a normal train and the ride is pretty short and without great views, its not always our favorite. Our kids have more fun playing around and running where they can see the big trains rather than being a in a normal train car.
Our 6 and 5 year olds loved it. Theres a fabulous childrens section and outdoor rides.
Fun when there was Thomas the tank engine event. My son had fun riding Thomas train. Not sure if it is as fun independent of the event or not. The cost of museum entry is for $20.00.
Better than I thought it would be and free for military. Lots of unique trains and interesting history.
Thoroughly engaging for kids (toddlers and up) and adults. Theres something for everyone. My kid loves the train tables to play, climbing in and out of the trains, and the space to run. And free parking is s bonus too! Last summer we did the reading program they offered and received a free train book.
Great place and very fun to vusit. also staff was polite and helpful. we learned many new things and had a great time. the only negative is the train ride is only avail thursday to sunday and were not aware of this. but all in all a grest time
Good and friendly.A bit expensive (low value of our curancy).Happy to look att the Allegheny, i now seen them both
Super fun place. We had a holiday party there. The staff were wonderful and had some fun things like a carousel and crafts for kids!
A warm, wonderful, immaculate museum that well represents the railroad tradition of the Band OAnd American Railroading in general.
A little expensive at $20 a head but a little boys dream come true. Having a 3 year old really brought the magic of a train station to life for him. My son walked in an was speechless. It was perfect for the 15 degree weekend we had. They offered free admission for the furloughed employees which I thought was very nice indeed. They have plenty of onsite parking which I was surprised of since it was in downtown Baltimore. I was also surprised at how much history was available around the B&O rail road as well as the information for kids and adults alike. There was plenty to keep all ages entertained and even 4 or 5 wooden train tables set up in a kids area where the kids could play with Thomas the train sets. Needless to say, if you need something to do this is definitely a must if you have a toddler into trains. Worth every penny for sure. It was beautiful!
We came here cause my daughter loves trains, and this is the perfect place for that. Not only can you see trains, but theres a ton of interaction available as well as education. And they have special events, such as the visit of Thomas the Tank Engine, which was a very fun event. I highly recommend this museum for any age
Absolutely loved this museum. Wish we had more time to explore. We were there for two hours; could easily have spent half a day there. Also, the staff were super kind and helpful. Highly recommended.
Awesome place in the heart of the old Irish neighborhood of Baltimore. There is parking contrary to reports of not finding any, you just have to look (lock your doors). Wish I would have took more pictures, will definitely go again an update the review.
Great place for a train lover. We even got to ride on the train. We went as a feildtrip and the kids loved it.
Truly a magnificent museum for train buffs and everyone else. Well maintained and has a short ride on a restored 1950s passenger train. The kids will love it!
One of the best railroad museums in the eastern United States.
If you like trains, you must go. An amazing find a very close to Camden Yards, but I recommend driving. There is ample parking
Great rail Museum Lots of excellent displays.
Great museum for a train lover. Sometimes they have Thomas the Tank Engine shows, which are always a blast. The surrounding neighborhood isnt the best, but the museum is surrounded by a fence. There is a little store on site, where you can buy souvenirs. All in all, a nice experience for us.
Always a Great Day to see trains.
So many trains to see! A group of us (all adults) spent an easy 3 hours there. Definitely recommend it. You get to board old trains too.
The history is rich but when it comes to my safety there are restrictions. As I am, a genuine woman, I should have a right to use the restroom in privacy and security.I do not find it safe at the B & O Train Museums All Gender bathrooms. How do I not know that there could be a malicious man in the stall next to me lurking and waiting to assault me? What has happened people? Was the All Gender bathrooms proposed to include all?? At the same time lets not infringe or discriminate upon womens rights.USA is the land of the free and home of the brave. Lets not strip its people of its freedom.
Great layout with a very impressive main building. The one-mile train track is a slow and easy guided tour - sit on the right-side (related to the direction you first travel) of the train for the best view.
A unique place! Lots of interesting locomotives, both old and new. They really cater to young kids as they have toys for them and lots of engines the kids can touch and play with the controls.
My son and I visited for their annual Thomas and Friends exhibition and train ride. Absolute 5 stars!!!!
Beautiful museum, and super kid-friendly! We attended a birthday party today and were really impressed with everything. There’s a kids playground outside, small carousel ride, and large indoor section that’s just for little kids. They really thought out the kids area- there are train tables, Legos, a coloring area, a well-stocked bookshelf, mini train house, and more. My children played happily there, and we would have stayed longer except it was just so darn hot. We will return when it’s cold outside. The birthday party included a train ride that the kids loved. Great experience. The bathrooms in the main building had a chair and changing table outside of the handicap stall, and a step stool by the sink. So kid friendly!!
A great place to visit.
A great place to get up close to history and touch it.
Nice museum and military get in free!
This was a great experience. I felt like a little kid again. So much history also.
Ive been here a few times and I can comfortably say it is one of the premier railway museums on the east coast if not nationally. They dont have a crazy amount of rolling stock but the pieces they and in particular those inside either the roundhouse or the north maintenance building have been beautifully restored. The none rail car exhibits are fantastic as well. The price of admission is pretty high but it certainly helps keep the buildings and exhibits all in great condition compared to some smaller places. One of the coolest features is a hand powered turn table in the middle of the roundhouse. Definitely worth a visit.
A well-kept museum that would be treasured by any railroad enthusiast. The kids there also seemed to enjoy themselves. For the adult wanting to check out another museum in the area with a passing interest in trains, the $20 ticket price may not be worth it. Perhaps the most entertaining exhibit one would find is watching the confusion at the all gender bathrooms. My wife and I each went into the “wrong” bathroom by accident as many others did. This led to averted eyes in the lobby outside, open gawks by some when entering, and embarrassing side comments from those leaving. It was clear that one bathroom lent itself to women and one to men as one restroom had a nursing area and the other urinals, but in order to understand this before entering, one had to spend some time looking closely at the “urinal” or “no urinal” picture/small wording sign underneath the larger printed ALL GENDER sign. Suffice to say, though the restrooms were open gender both in the signage and the patrons inside each room, from the awkward and surprised looks on many patrons who had thought they had “chosen” correctly, many would have preferred a to choice gender specific facilities. Just put a MEN and WOMEN sign up and let everybody keep what is in their pants to themselves, a doctor, or consenting adult.
Such a wonderful place to visit. My nephew loves trains and has always enjoyed coming here. The kids area with the train tables is always fun for him. He also loves the model trains (one is outside and another is inside one of the train cars). The volunteers here are wonderful and very helpful and informative. Such a fabulous place to visit and Im sure we will be back.
Very friendly staff and amazing sights for the young and old. Very well maintained and lots of history displayed. $20 per adult, $12 per child. Highly recommended!
Well done. Easy access to free parking. Modest cafe. Well worth an hour or two if you like trains. Good for kids of all ages.
Im coming back the first Tuesday of the month to pay half price to take the inside tour. $18 to look at trains in the building when I can look at trains for free in the parking lot is a bit much.
Must visit while in Baltimore. Good for kids and adults alike.
If in Baltimore, visit this museum!! Beautiful history, pleasant train drive with snacks, great employees. Walk down the memory lane of the American train!
Even big boys (men) love this place/ Conveniently located downtown, with ample on-site free parking. Displays both on the outside and inside of a beautifully maintained roundhouse with turntable. Paid train ride is a real hit, particularly with children. Food available on site.
Amazing! Whether youre a train enthusiast or not this place is interesting. The history of RR and seeing how big the trains are. Worth the fee to get in. I think was$11.00.
Just got a second year of the membership. We get the family and friends pass because it’s a fun place to bring our friends and family from out of town when they come to visit! It’s great for all ages from toddler to seniors. ️ so much history and varying displays, plus the neat play area, train rides, the scavenger hunt thing (which they’re changing now), outdoor activities. we’ve been here as a family so many times and we aren’t bored yet. There so much to read and see, we’ve been taking it in bite size pieces each time we visit... and we always discover something new that we hadn’t really seen before, with each trip we make!
Beautiful railroad museum, with the old B&O roundhouse displaying many very old artifacts primarily from the 19th century or early 20th century. The gift shop has things the kids will enjoy, and will probably want a souvenir from their day. For fans of more modern railway equipment, go to the out buildings, where equipment from the 20th century is housed. The streamlined C&O Hudson and mighty 2-6-6-6 Allegheny are must sees.
I enjoyed the train ride, overall great experience very educational.
Did the Polar Express ride was fun! Staff was awesome and very friendly!
It is a big museum with lots of trains, indoor exp and outdoor playground. there is train ride for about 1 mile, and there is train birthday party. They even have cookie taste, very very kids friendly.
Unlike other rail museums, this museum has full size rail cars, in addition to miniature models. Some civil war era rail cars are arranged in a roundhouse building, with placards explaining their history.Dont miss the rail cars in the parking lot. Some of them carried famous people such as President Lincoln. Visiting the parking lot portion is free. They also offer a 1-mile train ride on the first mile of B&O Railroad. The ride is narrated, but there isnt much new information, and the old MARC train is in poor condition. I do not recommend this train ride.
Interesting and fun. Really detailed and a lot of reading, but fun if you like old trains.
