Stunning depiction of the brutal yet resilient lives of African American slaves in the South. This is definitely a work of art worth viewing.

There is always some inevitable controversy over which statues should remain, and which should be removed from the public; which represents the history that we wish to remember, and that which we would rather forget. Ed Dwights recent addition to the Austin landscape, coming at a time in the US where historical statues were at the height of contention, is one that represents of of many fragments of the history of Texas and the communities that comprise it. Situated just past the Capitol Building, this statue commemorates June 19th, 1865 (Juneteenth), the date that slaves were emancipated, and Hendrick Arnold, one of the Texas Revolutionary fighters. The Texas African American History Memorial is something that can, and should, be included within your trip to Austin, even if only to glimpse at something that brings you closer to a more complete understanding of the complex local history.

There are some things you should see in Austin and Texas The African American History Memorial is one of them. It is a grand memorial that stands mostly alone in front of The State Capital Builiding. It is massive in size and depicts the history of some of our American brothers and sisters. The memorial is the story of America, through the people who built it. It is not easy to swallow but it is necessary. The statute almost breaths, the two days I visited the wind was blowing and the memorial seem to come alive.I wish that every person in American could experiece this work, I know that It would change many peoples mind. I lost track of time, because there was so many details to meditate on.The cost of admission is nothing, it is open to the public, I highly reccomend this place to anyone, specially those who consider themselves American. What you should know, come with enough time so that you can take in the history. Bring a jacket in the winter and an umbrella in the summer.Consider walking here as it will make it easier for you to be chill. The State Capital Builing is upa short hill which is complimemtary, there is a restaturant inside the Capitol building that is accesible.Pack your patience and your open mind.
