We enjoyed our walk through the forest and the gardens. At this time of the year, there is not much to see in the forest/bog area since it was late in November. So we will have to come back in spring. However we enjoyed the war memorial, the historical home, the dream gardens etc. Certainly worth a visit.

This was such a great find! The garden was beautiful & I loved that they had labels on the plants to easy identify them. We really enjoyed our time out doors there. I would have loved to do the trails, but with my older dog we only did the gardens. Well definitely be back!

It seems like a great place to go walk around. We were a vendor there and it was nice. I will say all the kid things were more for five and under rather than older kids including the playground area

We stayed in Athens for the weekend and wanted something fun to do in nature with our kids. This was perfect! It was a beautiful space, well maintained trails, and used up some extra energy the kids had while letting us learn more about East Texas plants and animals.

The main portion of this site is a well developed series of gardens and sculptures. Theres something for everyone here: plant nuts, exercise enthusiasts, little kids, and romantic couples. Our morning visit was a perfect chance to give the kiddos some exercise and take some colorful pictures ourselves. The volunteer we met was very helpful and friendly. We did try the short hike and the trail is quite unimproved - wear good footwear because of all the tree roots and muddy areas. But definitely worth doing!

I just renewed my arboretum membership despite living in poverty. Where else can you have a beautiful garden that strikes a balance between wild and groomed spaces, with something for everyone to enjoy? We dont have enough beautiful public spaces like these in East Texas, and if you get the membership, it will get you into other plant lover paradises all over the country, maybe even in the world. Check out their reciprocal membership agreements, worth the price to have the best.

The wife and I visited today. It was a wonderfully quiet and relaxing pastoral retreat in Henderson County. The grounds feature numerous varieties of local flora and restored or replica buildings from the 19th century. The nature trails were a little wet for hiking. Well check that out again next time we go.

Of all the things to do in Athens the arboretum head to be the coolest for outdoorsy people (which isnt saying much since Athens is a small town) however any outdoorsmen can have a great time waking around here and learning about the history of Athens and using the outdoor fitness activity space.

Sorry but very disappointing. The flower gardens have more weeds than flowers and the dude that was out pulling weeds(in the shade where noone sees) is the property snitch. Me and my wife found a shrub she has been looking for and I reached down in the messy garden to see if it trails off and grows off the vine or not and this dude tracks us down and says I saw you pull something out of that garden so please stop it is simple garden etiquette in a smart--- tone. And yes when I was kneeled down I pulled a freaking WEED up and dropped it on the grass. So it made my wife kinda feel weird like we were being watched for some odd reason?? We did go get the shrub we saw at a nursery after leaving but dont worry about us coming again to get ideas Athens Arboretum because I love plants but this experience ruined it for us.

The displays on the main grounds are truly beautiful. The memorial to our military is worth the visit in and of its self. The ONLY downside is that I wish there cartographer was a little better at his job while I enjoyed my walk in the woods I got a little turned around and seemed to cover some of the trails more than once! I know I went across the suspension bridge twice, which by the way is just plumb neat. But had a difficult time understanding the directions. I need to make the admission that the very friendly young man that was there that early morning helped me find where to pay when arriving early in the morning. I did manage to pick up a few pieces of trash along the way and even found a pair of lopers. Thanks to all that work so hard on the upkeep of this nature center. Next time I am lucky enough to visit Athens I will make it a point to visit again! (Maybe I will learn how to read the map!).

Very pretty place, plenty of dog walking with the whole family. Watch out for ants on the sandy trails, especially at the rest points. Dont forget to bring water for the dogs too, theres none on the trails for any hikers. Lots of shade which is nice, not crowded during the weekdays, we never saw another soul. Lots of interesting plants, play area for the little kids, relatively inexpensive donations for entry. Plenty of parking too.

This place was so beautiful, the office staff were friendly and helpful. I even got a pass to visit when ever I choose. They do charge per visit per person, but it is inexpensive and convenient. But, if you plan to visit frequently then by all means get yourself a pass for only $25 yearly for an individual. They have trails, clean restrooms and historic sites, the plants, grounds and botanical gardens are exquisite and serene. Please visit soon. I’m so proud to be living in East Texas. Great place for weddings and picnics.

Doesnt matter time of year, such gorgeously serene hike through the arboretum and flower gardens. Granted, it was super humid today, draining 3 liters of water tween my 2 pups and myself, yet, no complaints as the canopy keep kept us cool with the gentle breeze. The staff are super friendly, answering questions and eager to offer any assistance needed. And the most gregarious staff member?? Why, the kitty, Tansy. He wanted to to take the hike with us until he heard my pups howling to meet said Tansy, then thought better about that idea. The trails are kept up so nicely, even painting some of the roots that could be a tripping hazard, as orange. The 2 mile hike is pups, kitties and able bodied ppl only, nothing with wheels could or should or are allowed (bikes) to traverse. However, the gardens, the incredible chimes, the and school are all paved areas which lead to 2 different bridges (which ya gotta read about how the water seen is ALWAYS there, drought or not, fascinating).Enjoy!!

For what it is, this is a very nice place, in remote setting, with the facilities for almost any event and wedding. The large gazebo holds a good 120-140 people. There isnt a lot of parking, there is several buildings, historical in nature, playground and a nature trail. On the rehearsal night, the mosquitoes were really bad. I can see there being a problem during various times of the year. The staff was friendly and efficient.

Nice facility! I love what they doing there, but staff is really pushy about you stopping to pay. I went in and set up my picnic and I guess because of my ethnicity a grounds keeper told me to stop what I was doing with my family and go pay. I said, okay give me a moment so he stood over me starring. When I asked can I help you, he repeated go pay like a caveman. We were coming to get an annual membership after our lunch, but due to that experience we have not been back and will recommend our friends and family to not go. I hope it shuts down and turns back into a forest.
