No matter what the day, no matter what the weather, this location is always a moving memorial to those who have fallen from the Marine Corps. Bring your camera for a spectacular view, in addition to the memorial, of the US Capitol, Washington Monument and Lincoln Memorial, all lined in a row. ( Hint, youll have to do a little walking to get all three lined up perfectly )
Im A Marine Vet. Was stationed at Quantico. This time returning was even better than before. Im grateful, humbled and honored to be apart of something so great. Its a massive monument in person if you havent been you should definitely take some time to take in the moment and experience the grand size of this large than life size version of Iwo Jima....OOHRAH!!!!
This memorial is worth a visit for two reasons. First, it is an inspiring memorial in its own right. You definitely feel the power. Second, the memorial is located on a hill that has some of the best panoramic vistas of DC. Great place for that perfect camera shot that includes the Washington Monument.
Beautiful and moving memorial to the Marine Corp. No matter how many time I visit this Memorial, I am touch by its history and those it honor. The location is tranquil and beautiful; you can stand on a hill near the Memorial and look across the river and see The Capital, Washington Monument and The Lincoln Memorial.
This is one of the top 5 spots to watch the DC 4th of July fireworks show. Every year including this one with the pandemic you will find tons of people laying on blankets and chairs waiting to see the big show. If you get there a bit early you take in the memorial and get a good spot for viewing. In general it’s a good historical park in the DC metro to experience.
With everything going on in the world, I hope I am able to visit the US Marine Corps War Memorial again. I enjoyed my last trip here and to the national capital. There are so many iconic locations here. Its hard to plan just one day in the nationals capital. If youre visiting, be sure to stop by this memorial. Im a big supporter of our marines. They do great work. I also dont think they eat crayons, but I guess thats a touchy subject.
If you are planning to visit the Washington DC area or served in the United States Marine Corps. I highly recommend you visit this amazing Memorial. It is located off the George Washington Parkway and near Roslyn Virginia. You can take the train to Roslyn metro and walk to it. It is a very short walk to the US Marine Corps Memorial. The view are absolutely incredible of Washington from the Memorial. I highly recommend visiting during the day and night time. It should be noted during the summer months check out the local media. The US Marines have ceremony’s on the grounds of the memorial. The Memorial is commonly known as the Iwo Jima Memorial due to the Marines raising the flag on Iwo Jima during World War Two. I definitely recommend you bring a camera and definitely give your self plenty of time to enjoy the memorial. I served in the United States Marine Corps. My first time visiting was coming home from the USMC school of Infantry. It is really a very powerful experience and makes one proud if you have earned the Title of United States Marine. Enjoy your visit!!!
Amazing history to be learned, while picnicking! Bring your hammock, lawn chairs, blanket and lunch or nothing at all! Ample shade area is provided by the giant tree-lined shoulder! Its a tad tricky to get to the parking area if youre unfamiliar with the area. You must enter by the Arlington cemetery side road.
Amazing memorial honoring our troops. Place is beautiful, and pictures come out amazing with the help of the surrounding grounds. A must stop.
Moving! Stunning! All that was and still is Sacrificed ! I have no other words for this USMC memorial.
Always a wonderful place to visit. Dont miss the view from up the hill
The US Marine Corps Memorial is one of the most recognized memorials in the Washington, D.C. area. Its a memorial in Rossly, Virginia dedicated to the marines who lost their lives for their country.Theres a small free parking lot nearby and a walkway speaking to the history of the memorial. It also has beautiful views of the National Mall in Washington, D.C.
Pictures are worth a million words. I am not a crayon eater myself (My friend Dave prefers the red ones), but proud of them just the same. Hope all my Marine Corp friends and associates get a chance to see this place in person. Well worth the trip.
Worth your time to visit! It is the first Memorial to honor war Veterans.
This is a great park for casual walking or some workout sessions. It’s small enough that it does not attract a lot of people but big enough that you can social distance while still satisfying that desire to be around people. It has beautiful views of DC (especially at dusk) and when the cemetery opens again it is right next to it.
Its just beautiful. With an incredible view of the city.
Ive been to the DC area many times and overlooked this Memorial on previous occasions because I thought it was too far out of the way. Its right next to Arlington National Cemetery and only 10-15 minutes from the Lincoln Memorial. Definitely a must see if you are in the area!
Very powerful and historical site. It was amazing to see it in real life
Super cool to see and lots of space/grass/shade to sit in.
A beautiful memorial and is much larger than what one might think. Was able to view this on a day with virtually no one there and it was extremely peaceful. Nice walkable grounds with plenty of room that even if there was a lot people out wouldnt feel crowded. Easy to get in and out of and there is some on site parking.
The memorial itself is beautiful from any angle, lots of open space, benches, walking paths, adjacent to Arlington Cemetery, street parking.
HUGE park. Perfect for picnics and dogs running wild. As you head towards the river, youll have a perfect view looking over downtown DC
Very well kept and made incredibly accessible for veterans who are blind. Amazing display and memorial.
Awesome memorial and beautiful surrounding area. I couldnt help but listen to 1,2,3,4 United States Marine Corps while walking around it. For me that made it a little more special.
Memorial site modeled after the photo Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima on Mount Suribachi during the Battle of Iwo Jima.
It’s a great memorial, not well lit at night. Make sure to watch your steps around it. Also an amazing view, you can see the capitol, the Washington monument, and Lincoln memorial. The memorial gives an illusion that our soldiers are holding up the American flag. It’s also very close to the Arlington Cemetery. A very cool memorial!
Awesome views of the city. Unbelievable statue, much larger in person, really happy we stopped in
Such a beautiful place to be especially early in the morning. I came early in the morning today to catch the sunrise and take photos. Standing there and watching the statue of these gallant and brave soldiers pinning the flag to the ground in Iwo Jima against enemy and sniper fire is soul captivating. There is no sweeter love than giving ones life so others may live. As we commemorate D-Day, a big thank u to all our men, women and their families serving in the armed forces. To those who died defending freedom allover the world, RIP.
Beautiful place! If you are in Arlington area its a must visit.
Beautiful and peaceful park to have a nice picnic. Lots of great trees with ample shade. The monument is full of intricate details. Spend some time walking around the whole statue to take all the details.
Exceptional monument to those who offered all for our country.
It was very interesting to learn about the Marines landing on Iwo Jima and the history behind the statue.
The memorial is absolutely amazing, and the park right next to it (between the war memorial and the cemetery) is a wonderful place to find some peace and quiet away from the city for locals. Including some breathtaking views of the Lincoln memorial, Washington Monument, and Capital. This is also a great place for families to watch the Fourth of July Fireworks.
A top DC location. Remember the price of freedom.
Powerful symbol and reminder of the sacrifice of so many brave Marines for our nation.
A very breathing monument just by the sheer size of it. Visiting it close to sunset is even more breathtaking with the setting sun and the red sky. Highly recommend to visit.
I have always wanted to see this monument. It was very impressive in person. I did the DC monuments at night tour, and it was amazing!
Educational, peaceful, great view - perfect park to take a few moments of and just enjoy.
I rode from Los Angeles to Washington DC to see this memorial and a few others. Really spectacular and worth the trip. Amazingly both beautiful and peaceful. We came at night and no one was there except us. It was really special. It was a great time to remember those who I served with and pay my respects to all of the Marines who have served and fallen. One of the big highlights of my motorcycle journey across the beautiful United States of America.
Very easy to get into and view. I always wanted to see this monument and it did not disappoint.
What an amazing place. The Iwo Jima memorial brings out the Patriot in everyone! The tulips in the Netherlands section were at full bloom when I visited. Beautiful place. Needs restrooms though. The portapotties need better maintenance.
Every Marine should make it out here to see. It is amazing!
A beautiful monument that serves as a reminder of of the scale of WW II. This scene, immortalized from a photograph at Iwo Jima poignant. It is hard for us to imagine a war like this today that was being fought on multiple continents. This site also offers a great view of the capital, Washington monument and Lincoln Memorial
Such a beautiful and amazingly realistic statue! I love it, its one of my most favorite statues in the DC area.
The War Memorial is dedicated to all U.S. Marine Corps personnel who died in the defense of the United States since 1775. Very important and iconic memorial to visit. There is plenty of space to walk and it’s close to Arlington National Cemetery. FYI: it has a “city bike” station if you want to rent/return yours.
This is one of the most mesmerizing memorials in the dc area. My favorite time to go ya sunrise because you don’t have a million tourists and you can watch the sunrise over the mall and from behind the monument. Then you can walk back through Arlington national cemetery and really take in what our military gives for us to be able to live.
This is a great monument with much significance and will forever be near and dear to my heart ️
I cant Express enough how much I enjoy getting every chance I get to visit. Whether to clear my head or simply enjoy this stunning memorial. Need to make your way over and enjoy the sight. Plenty of parking and plenty of lawn if you want to bring chairs or set up a picnic.
Simply fantastic--and a short 10 minuted walk from the Arlington National Cemetery. What can I say, it is peaceful and beautiful, and so meaningful. Ive always wanted to see it, and we easily combined it with a tour of the cemetery. Wonderful!
Fantastic sculpture, size is impressive. Very peaceful park location. Not close to Mall, need transportation to get there. Parking is free and close to monument.
A lot of locals come to this place to run and picnic. Its a really laid back place to visit. For visitors Id suggest coming earlier throughout the day to get your pictures in. I just wish they had more accessible parking. Its about 3 long blocks away from metro.
Very solemn and moving memorial. We visited it on a Night Tour with a big bus company. It was beautifully lit and peaceful. Glad Ive seen it.
Hands Down one of the better places I been. You just feel awesome looking at it.
Excellent Monument in Arlington.
Great place. Amble parking and good to walk
Memorial to US Marines, centered around the famous statue of the flag raising on Iwo Jima. Pretty park next to Arlington Cemetery, used as a parade ground for special occasions. Free to the public, all outdoors. Includes a small amount of free parking and a seating area. Bring a picnic, but be respectful & responsible (clean up, dont play Frisbee or tag, etc). Didnt see any garbage cans, and theres no restrooms.Currently undergoing renovations, so watch out for the workers & be careful on the steps.
Beautiful and well maintained public park. Excellent fo summer workouts. :)
Definitely worth stopping by if your time permits. Plenty of area to roam around on.Please hit “Like” if this was helpful. Thanks.
Breathtaking!Me and my family recently immigrated to thee United States from South Africa. Seeing something like this for the first time was absolutely breathtaking.
Beautiful, and easy to get in & out... LOVES IT! There is plenty of space to have a picnic on a blanket! Plenty of room for the kids and run around. They do offer porta potties but no picnic tables.
Good hike from Arlington National Cemetery. Was bigger than we thought it would be. Glad we took the time to check it out. The detail was impressive.
Awesome. Took my 93 year old Iwo Jima vet for the first time. He was treated like royalty.
Amazing memorial to honor those who have served The U.S.A.
Moving experience - magnificent sculpture inspired by the iconic photo of US Marines raising the flag on Iwo Jima
Closed right now during Covid19 but definitely recommended to visit.
Awesome views of the city of Washington, D.C., from Arlington, Virginia. Recently underwent a massive refurbishment. Near the Netherlands Carillon and Arlington National Cemetery. The memorial is nearly on the same axis as the National Mall so it offers great views of the National Mall, Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument, and the US Capitol. Dedicated to the Marine dead of all wars, and their comrades of other services who fell fighting beside them.
I enjoy taking my kids till moment of History
This is without doubt my favourite memorial I’ve ever seen. It’s huge! So much bigger than what you expect. It’s a beautiful sculpture.I advise you to take the tike to visit this. As it is a wee bit further away from the other memorials along the capitol walk. We got a taxi over the river and was so glad we did!
I thought I already rated this, but it is a very nice place. Theres room to sit back from the monument, a small amount of parking, and the honor flight busses were arriving. It was so touching to see these brave warriors, now in wheelchairs, or using walkers, seeing this, in their honor. It is adjacent to Arlington National Cemetery, you could walk over, if your feet are still willing. Its such an iconic monument, but seemed less visited than the others, which line the National Mall.
The Iwo Jima Memorial, also known as the U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial, honors the Marines who have died defending the United States since 1775. The Iwo Jima Memorial is located near Arlington National Cemetery, in Arlington, Virginia. The memorial stands just across the Potomac River from Washington, DC. I must-see on any visit.
There is a lot to the story of those men that brought up the flag. The Flag itself. All incredible. The sacrifice just to get up there.
Beautiful. The memorial is in Arlington, and right next to a section of Arlington National Cemetery. Definitely try visit both. The history of the monument itself is interesting, and visiting both sites together is incredibly moving. We visited at night as you can see in the photo. Not only is the monument well lit at night, when you are there you have a great view of DC.
It was great because when I grow up I want to become a marine and this inspired me even more to become a marine
Wreath laying ceremony depicting the 75th Anniversary of the raising of the American Flag at Iwo Jima.
Magnificent! Pictures do not do justice
Breath taking! Honoring those who gave their lives ️
I love this memorial. It is part of George Washington Parkway-attached to Arlington National Cemetery.
Its an amazing monument. Great place to walk around also has bike rental racks near the parking lot. Dont forget to go see the Danish Clarion tower(bell tower). Can walk to Arlington National Cemetery. Great veiws of DC.
Breathtaking. Do not visit DC without seeing this!
Very big open space to hang out, ample parking space and amazing view of the Lincoln memorial, the Washington monument and the Capitol.
Its always a great honor stand near this monument, since returning in 2004, I feel a tremendous respect for my brothers and sisters who continue to serve this great nation, I now stand in the ranks of the retired Marines, if I could do it all over again I wouldnt hesitate, it was and always will be the greatest honor of my life. Semper Fidelis
A fitting tribute to the men who inspired a nation during World War II. Currently undergoing renovation to the surrounding steps, landscaping but in no way inhibits one’s ability to view such an awesome memorial. Definitely a must see for all who visit the Washington DC area.
Ive seen pictures of this but never in person. Its very impressive and a very important part of our nations history.
Great place walk around, kick ball and or bring pled and just kick back and chill
So much respect. I love this memorial.
A fine place to recharge the soul!
Its beautiful. There is a nice area around that displays information in regards to the events related to the monument. Nowhere to sit, though.
Shows the true meaning of heroism and the fight and honor for our flag and country. Very well depicted moment in history.
Love all the monuments. Its a good reminder of the sacrifices that have been made. A time for reflection and discussion.
Semper Fi! This place is sacred to us Marines.
I liked this memorial! It reminds you by every war the US has been involved!!
A great place to reflect. Views down to national mall too
Great place to learn a little history and enjoy the outdoors
Very peaceful ample space to relax with family and friends.
I was in shock as to how big this memorial is. Pictures clearly do this place no justice. You have to see it in person. Deserves nothing less than 5 stars.
