A regional museum that informs the visitor of Alexandrias complex history. I like the way it tracks the rise of the town until the devastation of the American Civil War, and then the struggle to find relevance then after. The physical development of the town is explained. Special exhibitions are good (March 2019): Alexandria and WW1; and a display of clothing items from the 19th century. The building, respectfully restored, is a fine example of early architecture in the town. Well worth a visit.
Awesome resource right under your nose
Definitely worth a visit - particularly if there is a concert in the auditorium. Beautiful building and an interesting place to stop if you enjoy American History.
Attended a recital here and it was an experience that reminded me that the Lyceum was built for this purpose. A great experience.
The acoustics are very good. The room is lovely in its restoration.
We walked from National Harbor and needed a quick place to use the facilities. We stumbled in here and found ourselves looking around for quite some time. The $2 suggested donation is well worth it and the gift shop has some nice postcards.
Perfect spot for an Old Town Alexandria wedding reception! From start to finish, Jim and the rest of the staff at the Lyceum were an absolute pleasure to work with. Jim went out of his way to work out every detail in a way that made the day so much easier for all. Whenever a change or question arose, we knew we could count on Jim to help work through an easy solution. (We even had our other vendors thanking us for how easy Jim and the Lyceum staff were to work with.) The event space, newly renovated just before our event, was thoroughly enjoyed by our out-of-town guests who very much enjoyed the history of the area, and the Lyceum itself. Add in the fact that the Lyceum provides tables and nice chairs and hosting an event at the Lyceum is a no-brainer. Ill save you some time - look no further than the Lyceum.
Great museum. They only ask for a $2 donation but it’s well worth a lot more.
Small but well put together displays on the history of Alexandria. Visit was enhanced by a live piano concert on the second floor!
The Lyceum is a small and elegant historic building with a museum and exhibits about the history of Alexandria. The service is excellent and the guide is very knowledgeable. The place is very interesting and I highly recommend this place to every tourist who wants to know more about Alexandria.
Went there for first night Alexandria. Has a small history museum inside and a nice gift shop.
Nice little local museum. Alexandria is a wonderful town full of food and history. And no visit to the Old Town is complete without at least a visit to this museum. In fact I grabbed a wonderful guide book to Alexandria from the gift shop at this location. Staff was nice and I would suggest any visitors to this city, be if for just a day or longer, stop here to get an overview of the history and what is available to see.
Charming place with good history of the town and waterfront. Front desk person was helpful. Its a nice stop if you are walking around downtown and you want to learn a bit about the town. It costs 2 bucks to get in.
Great staff, lots of things to see.
Learn American history, art and culture through a treasured gem of America, the Lyceum.
Nice little museum in downtown Alexandria. Well worth stopping in.
Some really cool artifacts and history in this little museum a must see for a local history buff!
A gem of Old Town history. From Poe to Barnums Mermaid, so much happened here. Search the museum to discover some of the highlights of Alexandrias history. But, sadly it doesnt even contain half of the cool, quirky stories; be sure to hear some of the stories from the staff who are happy to share some of their favorite events discovered in the archives. Make sure to ask about Barnums mermaid - half chimp/half fish, it was displayed here long enough to confuse a few journalists regarding it authenticity! If you are lucky, check out Poes performance during Halloween!
Had a great and awesome time at this museum. It is certainly very easy to locate. The management are very friendly and informative.
This is a nice little museum. There is plenty of history to be learned, spanning centuries. The space itself is rather small, so dont expect to spend too much time here. The location is great too, as it is right by the busy shopping and eating center of Old Town Alexandria.
Learned about 19th Century Pseudoscience.
Upstairs was a nice recital area for small chamber groups. People working there are very nice and friendly.
A beautiful architectural representation of neo classical design, with the original grand staircase and columns out front. They have a number of exhibits inside, though, they are small and not particularly noteworthy in most cases. Its a small museum with a small budget, so its not surprising the permanent exhibits are lacklustre. The real gem is the War World I exhibit. It occupies a space much larger than the rest and has been carefully curated to include a number of artifacts from local residents.
Beautiful place. Lots of great historic exhibits....
Very interesting war history.
The Lyceum has three mini gallery rooms now. Its a very small museum but offers some interesting artifacts. You can rent the 2nd floor for small wedding or party. They also allow you to do the cocktail hour on the 1st level.
This is a must for any tourist or even citizen of Alexandria. The Lyceum exhibits show the colorful past of this riverfront city. Easy parking. Helpful and friendly staff. Highly recommended.
Nice place to learn about some of alexandria history.
Interesting and informative display of some of the history of Alexandria.
Great place for local Alexandria info not found other places
Beautiful and well thought out presentation of the History of Alexandria. Surprisingly interactive. Upstairs is a gorgeous space that Ive now seen two performances at. Highly reccomended for musicians in the area to play at.
Great place, just wish they had more artifacts to examine.
Not really a review, I just wanted to share that this was the home of my great aunt and her husband, Dr. and Mrs. Hugh McGuire. My great aunt sold this house to her husband for eternal love..yes, it is on the deed. Ask to see the deed.
Take 15 minutes and walk through. Theres a lot of history in Alexandria, though most is fairly unremarkable.
Great collection and info about Alexandria. The exhibits looked very outdated, however. They should consider charging admission so they can update their museum.
Great hidden treasure in Alexandria. They hold many cultural events and talks. Museum inside.
