As an old white guy, Im glad its there and doing things like the talks and movie screening on Rosa Parks before her more famous back of the bus direct action. At the same time, not sure how welcome Id be, given differences like mobility and other issues. YMMV

A hidden gem! I learned a lot visiting this museum. First black library! They have a small area where you can see small artifacts and read about the history of Alexandria. They play a short video on the movement of the first black library. Also, I stayed for a lecture and that was very interesting. They have some cool things you can purchase. Overall, you may look inside and say this is a quick in an out but if you take your time to read and understand the information provided, you can easily spend some time there. It is truly a hidden gem and the director and volunteers are so nice. Will be back!

Small museum with a lot of heart. The current art exhibit was moving. Sherry Sanabria’s African American Historic Site Paintings holds space via painting.

Stumbled onto it after an all day nightmare attempt to go to DC for an event. $2 suggested donation at the door. Pay more if you can. Its worth $10 for its history and its work to share that history in the commentary community. It makes efficient is of its tight space for permanent and temporary exhibits covering slavery, reconstruction, civil rights and art. The first public library for the citys black residents, the museum is situated in its historically black, segregated neighborhood, in which the residents are now almost entirely young and white. Blocks of tiny row houses... And in many parts the architectural character is late 18th early 19th century. Interesting.

This is a great little museum and probably overlooked by many who would be grateful to know It’s here so they could stop by for a visit. Free but they take donations if you like. Small but with a wealth of information and history. You’ll have to find parking along the streets.
