Prison is supposed to be one of the most haunted in the US. Closes at 5pm so night activities NOT allowed. Although I didnt sense any spiritual energies, I enjoyed the museum, the cells, and the theater inside. The park provided invaluable information on how prison life was for the guards & prisoners during territorial times. The gift shop also had nice souvenirs to take home. Worth the stop, highly recommend.

Awesome place if your interested in old west history. The prison is well preserved and kind of creepy. When we visited it was 115 degrees and it really put into perspective the miseryThe prisoners must have endured. The reasons for some of the incarceration was shocking. Some were put in there adultery and receiving stolen goods. Highly recommend visiting. The price was very reasonable for what you get.

Took my wife and 14 yr old grandson today to visit the Yuma Territorial Prison located on a scenic, photographic perch overlooking the Colorado River as it winds past Yumas Old Town District. The Territorial Prison was de-funded by the AZ State Parks District in 2009 because of state spending cut-backs. The citizens of Yuma stepped up and SAVED the historic prison (1st opened in the 1870s, and active until 1909) from being permanently closed. The Prison is now entirely funded by private community donors, and gate receipts from visitors. It has been a few years since I last visited the Prison. I must say the group of local citizens responsible for maintaining the Prison have done a OUTSTANDING job of maintaining, and even improving and upgrading the grounds and exhibits in the Prison! The exhibits are historical, informative, and some quite humorous, and contain many interesting artifacts, photographs, and written articles from the time period. The cell blocks located outside the building that contains the exhibits were constructed out of large blocks of desert rock by manual labor of prisoners in the 1870s; the cells were dark and Spartan, inhabited by snakes and scorpions, and had no air conditioning (a major factor in the 115 degree Yuma summer days), and bring the prison term Hard Time up a whole new level. I can highly recommend a visit to the Yuma Territorial Prison for a look into prison life in the Old West in the 19th Century. A visit there is an enjoyable and informative investment of ones time, and well worth the price of admission while visiting Yuma, AZ!

Small prison but packed with history! They offer a military discount as one of the ticket prices which dropped the adult price to $4.00 instead of $8.00. There was a lot of good information to read about the inmates! In the museum part they have a mirror so you can take your very own mugshot! We were excited to visit since Ghost adventures did an episode here. After touring the prison it was nice to walk to the cemetery and look gaze at the Colorado River. If you have a moment stop by since it doesn’t take long to tour it.

I arrived at 3:25pm & wanted to pay to walk through the museum. The man at the entrance stated he wasn’t letting anyone else in because “the cell block is closing & that’s the best part”...Isn’t this why there are hours of operation? Seems crazy to me to turn away a paying patron that wants to walk through quickly & read up on history. Isn’t that actually part of the purpose of historical sites such as this?

Good day trip. Very interesting. The staff were all very pleasant and helpful. The tour is self-guided so make sure you pay attention to the map they had out on admission. The tour is not very interactive, so children may become bored. This is really a location for adults. The overall design is oriented toward informing the visitor of the history of the prisoners who were incarcerated during its operation.A few hours is more than enough to view theentire museum. The parking is very convenient and while most of the tour is wheelchair accessible, there are a few steps to access the watchtower. The price is very reasonable, and if visiting Yuma this is definitely a must see.

This was my first visit to the Yuma Territorial Prison and WOW, I cant believe what the prisoners endured there. It couldnt have been easy to be a guard as well. All I can say is that you need to make sure you take the time to walk the grounds and listen/read the stories about life in the prison. I did go into the Dark Cell and didnt get goosebumps but it would be a great place to spend Halloween night! I did end up with one odd photo. not sure how it happened but it will be a great story. Dont miss the cemetery which is a short walk to the east of the parking lot. You can also walk down to the Wetlands to look for birds and animals. Plan on at least 2 hours to get through everything. Probably the best historical attraction in Yuma. If you are a fan of the wild West, you will lose yourself in the narratives of the men and women that were imprisoned here. (Thats right, quite a number of female outlaws served time in this prison.)If you are traveling on the cheap, there are some interpretive signs in the parking lot that you can visit without having to pay the $8 entrance fee, as well as the old prison cemetary. But if you are a history buff, you will definitely consider your dollars well spent if you go inside.

Great historic site that reflects what Yuma was dealing with in the mid to late 1800’s to 1909. The museum has a great range of artifacts and displays that cover a lot of the history of the place. Then you go outside to the cell blocks to see where the inmates were housed in extremely primitive cell block of stone and iron strapping. 6 men to a cell had to be horrible, but it is what they did. Fortunately the community rallied in 2010 to save the site from being shut down due to budget issues and raised $70k in 60 days to keep it open. Don’t miss this unique piece of local history!
