I would not recommend Boardman Soccer Association to anyone that does not have a direct affiliation with the coaches in this league. My child had never played a team sport, and wanted to learn soccer so we signed her up with the BSA. We put a lot of time into getting her ready for sports and playing them with other children. She started in a competitive league for BSA, however, after a couple of weeks realized she needed to hone her skills and went to a rec league. Starting out we noticed that many of the games she was getting less playing time during the games and the coaches were being much harder on her during practices then the other kids. I don’t so much have issue with a tough coach but this should be equal across the board. They were quick to call her out on mistakes on the field, and were less encouraging to her than others. She was not the only child I saw being treated differently, but it seemed to be worse with her. What would become her second to last game she was sitting for long stretches of time and asked her coach about it, which seemed to make things worse. She always put in effort during the game and was making vast improvements. It started out we would use these things to encourage her to get better and really show them she belonged on the field, however the mistreatment escalated. What would be her last game on the team, it was a cold morning so we had her in athletic pants instead of shorts as there are no stated rules against this. When we arrived the assistant coach immediately made a big deal in front of everyone about her pants and the referee would not allow her to play unless she put her equipment under her pants. There was another BSA game going on in the field next to us in full view with other players wearing pants over their equipment without issue. At this point it really started to seem like she was being singled out. What would be her last practice all of the prior picking basically came to a head. In previous practices there were instances of a couple kids bullying her and name calling which we sat her down and talked to her about handling bullies and deescalation, while keeping an eye to make sure it wouldn’t get worse and hoping the coaches would handle the issues on their field. The last practice (9/21/20) this went from teasing to her being spit on. When she tried to report it to her coach she was told to not be a tattletale. Being upset you are getting spit on is not being a tattletale particularly during a time when health and safety guidelines are ramped up. Previous to this incident at the start of practice the same coach made a big deal about the same ball she had been using for a month needing air, told her she couldn’t use it, and was very loud about it in front of everyone. During one of the drills where the head coach was blocking the goal and the kids had to try to score, she continually throughout the drill immediately kicked the ball away from my child while giving the other kids more of a chance and even allowing a few to score. At this point it was blatantly obvious she was not being treated equally. After the coaches blew her off over the spitting incident, our child came to us and her mom attempted to have a conversation with the coach off to the side hoping this would get the coach to address bullying and dangerous behavior with the team. At this point the head coach blew her off as well and told her to get off the field. This got her mom upset and during the conversation she had with me on the sideline the assistant coach inserted herself which then escalated the situation again and resulted in the assistant telling us we need to get a refund from the league or find a new team.
