Wow! What a gem! We paid online since there was no one there on a Sunday during Covid. The entrance to the park was unassuming and we weren’t sure there was going to be much to see. We were wrong. We drove through and saw that there is a campsite in addition to a picnic area and several trails. The park was fairly busy despite it being late afternoon on a Sunday. The trails can be accessed in the winter with skis but no bikes are allowed. We came here to see the fall colors and we were not disappointed. We came mid October, around the peak time for the colors. Due to limited time, we were only able to go one one trail: the King’s Bluff trail. It was about 1 mile long and the end of the trail was worth the hike. You can see the Mississippi River from this bluff. Just beautiful!Wish we had more times to see the other trails! The drive down here was just as beautiful.
Great views. It was very hot & dry & dusty. It hadnt rained in a while. It also costs $7.00 to get into the park. I did like the fact you could see the Mississippi river & beyond. I imagine I. The fall time the colors on the trees would be fantstic.. word of advice dont forget to bring Sunscreen, bottled water, & some light bug spray & hi king boots or sturdy shoes. Be aware of your surroundings. If you bring kids hold onto them. Really cool views. This was a great early part of the day to see everything before it was extremely hot in the 90 degrees. Enjoy . Go check it out yourself.
The river bluffs are gorgeous. Multiple outstanding overlooks and viewpoints. The Kings Bluff Overlook is the cream of the crop, but also the most crowded (for good reason), at least relatively speaking. On a bluebird day in late August, crowded meant coming across others on the trail every 5-10 minutes, on average.
A great place to camp with toddlers. For us. I hope our kids exclaims of joy occasionally didnt bother our neighbors. The trails were a good length for all us to hike together. We camped in site 21, where we had decent LTE with t-mobile. The sites were clean, the showers and toilets were very clean. There is free water if you can haul it. One of our favorite stops recently.Only thing that would be better, would be to come at a different time of yearwhen there are less mosquitos and lower Temps.
Met our expectations but did not exceed. Bathroom was great clean and functional. Great trails to great views. No pull through camp sites. Was not offered electricity hook up but looks like some sites had power hook up.
Breathtaking views, and spacious wooded campsites. Friendly and knowledgeable rangers. Good value for the cost. Wouldve rated 5 stars except that the campsite we rented was too narrow to get our camper into. We had to switch to another site, which was a hassle and would have been a disaster if there was no other site available. Still, its a beautiful and a great place to camp.
Easy to get to and a lot of parking. I also really thought the trails were well kept. The views are also very pretty as well.
Nice views from the King Bluff and easy hike to it as well. Hiked easily with couple kids under 4 and couple senior people.
So. Many. Lookouts!Ive been back here a couple times this summer and I keep finding more short hikes with BEAUTIFUL views.Always worth the trip to one of my favorite state parks.
Loved this place. Perfect little walk to stretch my legs during a cross country drive. Easy access from the interstate... although the last little bit is a dirt road.
Breath taking lookouts that are relatively easy walks to get to.
Very nice park. Great trails and great overlooks of the Mississippi River. Picnic area and camping too.
Trails we nice and easy to hike. Great views!!
The trails and the campsites were very well maintained. The hiking trail starting at the campground leads to some amazing vistas! A warning to those with large Class A or 5th wheels, the road in is narrow and winding. More than a few very low hanging branches and 2 very steep hills. For those with very nice rigs be warned. We did it in our 34 Class A classic just fine but certainly trimmed a few trees.
A beautiful park with some nice hiking trails with great overlooked of Mississippi River valley.
Short hikes with pretty great views of the Mississippi river at the end. Great for an evening walk to watch the sunset. Sparse crowds. Doggy bags available. Clean and intuitively laid trails that are properly marked with occasional maps. Can get very dusty though.
Nice to walk around but to many people. Dirt road only.
Im giving it only three stars because right now its not as fun hiking as it usually is. The road in is filled with potholes and its all mud. And the trails are mostly covered with this awful crusty snow and ice that we received a little less than a week ago. Its really hard to walk in. We did wear snow cleats which helped but youre still putting a lot more effort into every step. The scenery is beautiful. The bathrooms were open where you paid your fee and one near picnic area. Its a beautiful place and the state park system cant help with the weather in Point I love to go back when its dryer.
Beautiful trials and a decent campsite. Very nice showers (two in the mens bathhouse w/ 1 being HA). As with most MN state parks bring bug spray!
I just loved Great River Bluffs State Park. Had a couple different types of Landscapes including Bluff Prairie hardwood oak forest. We saw deer, rabbits, goldfinches, a resident Cardinal at our campsite, Chipmunks, black squirrels, many butterflies, dragonflies, grey squirrels and we saw a couple of bald eagles while driving along the Mississippi River. We did have a bad experience checking in because there were no pay envelopes for car permits or firewood, nor were there any staff anywhere to be found for the first two days we were there. However we paid our fees on the third day but still never saw any park staff except for a young man mowing grass on the last day.. Very clean and quiet I would recommend camping in the 20s outside loop sites for maximum quiet.
Beautiful park, we didnt get to see any goats. But, we did see a whole lot of Karens once saturday rolled around.Pros: great sights, great trailsCons: Too many spiders, Too many Karens
Fall is amazing with the colors and the views.Several trails, though most are not too long.
Great stop for travelers or locals to to who want to hike, take in the majestic views of the Mississippi river or spend the night on the campgrounds. Wood for fires, water and toilets available on site.
New favorite park! Beautifully maintained trails and facilities. Absolutely wonderful. Easy to get to, right off the interstate.
Lots of good hiking and lots of different trails to explore. A bit busier on the weekends in the summer but you would be hard pressed to find anyone there in the colder months or on the weekdays. Its a gorgeous area surrounded by valleys and bluffs, and of course the Mississippi River!
Walk along the tops of 500 ft bluffs at this wonderful state park. Youll see forests consisting of pines, hickory, walnut, oak, and more. Also see the ongoing conservation effort to rebuild the native blufftop prairies of the area, where you may lucky enough to see a timber rattlesnake.Trails arent too difficult compared to many areas in the driftless zone, but the views are still amazing. These views feature several angles of the Mississippi river, as well as a dramatic view of Queens bluff. All in all, a very accessible park for anyone, with an emphasis on restoration of the natural beauty of the area.
Great party to home the trails. Beautiful views of the Mississippi valley.
We are here after most of the leaves have come down in the fall, it still has an appealing look Before Sunset, but most of the fall color is gone. Still nice to hike out and view the river.
The amount of vistas facing all different directions makes a day here so worthwhile. The fall colors are spectacular!
Excellent park! The staff was very friendly and the campground was very nice! The trails are well groomed and marked and the views are breathtaking! Highly recommend!
If you love nature. Beautiful place to visit
Home to a unique ecosystem called goat prairie.
We camped at site #23 with our 24 ft travel trailer. It was a tight fit but it fit. There are no hookups at any campsite but the park ranger said we could run our generator outside of quiet hours ofcourse. The site is surrounded by tall trees but is in full sun for about 4 hours at peak heat hours.Trails are nice, easy and take you to multiple lookout points. Theyre easy to do with kids and dogs.Their map shows a playground but none exists. We found a ton of morel mushrooms off trail and saw a lot of different birds. There is no water ways in the park for fishing or anything. Youd have to drive down to small town called Pickwick or somewhere close to the Mississipi. There is a KwikTrip Gas Station just off the exit to the park thats close to go to if you need any supplies.
The views were beautiful and we loved the thick forest and enchanting camping trip. definitely worth the drive!
Gorgeous overlooks. Largely wooded campground, fewer than 40 sites, nice bathrooms with warm water and showers.
It was a gorgeous day with very few people and no bugs, that made it perfect! Clean trails were a big plus and garbage cans spread out to help with messes. The fall colors have to be beautiful so well plan more trips.
Great view of the Mississippi River! Great hiking!
Beautiful place. I didnt do my research before we ended up here on our trek up North... No electricity. There is fresh water that you can carry back to your site. The bathrooms and showers are excellent and have warm water. This place is remote and quiet. So relaxing. So easy to pay, you just call the number on the site post and a friendly person will get you all taken care of. Then you just fill out your registration provided at the park entrance. Put your confirmation number on it, tear off the part that goes on your vehicle, drop the other part in the box.
The best it was so pretty up there
Nice place to camp with scenic views. Came here with our 28ft fifth wheel for a few nights. No dump station and no electric sites but ok to run the gen during the day.
Nice trails. Fun walk.
Gorgeous overlooks!!
So beautiful! Cant wait to go back and spend a lot more time.
I only went hiking. The trails were nice and and views were great.I just wish the trails were marked a little better.
Beautiful seenre and great vews. Pretty good hikes and campground is nice.
Very disappointed with this park visit. The signage is poor and we could not find anywhere to park to find the vantage points to see the bluffs. Since we could not find where to go we just left. Its a primitive park with a dirt road and no restrooms. We never got to find the views some have stated are breathtaking.
The hiking is pretty easy, and the lookouts have some of the best views in the area.
There are many different trails to hike, choose one or all in a day. Beautiful scenery overlooking the Mississippi river in some places.
Awesome Campsites and clean facilities. And the views were awesome!!
Beautiful park with fantastic views of the Mississippi River from the top of the bluffs. Beautiful views of the Black River and La Crosse as well. Nice place for Fall colors. Nice trails and campsites.
Love this park and the hiking! We saw a rattlesnake in the campground area.
Nice views! Trails are easy to get to and are full of beauty.
Some of the best views in the state, just the drive down to the park along the river was amazing. Trails were very clean as youd expect, and although a little rocky at times none of the best views require going far up or down hill to see, though there did appear to be trails that went down the bluff for those looking for more of a hike. Much of the park was on top of the bluffs, making many of the main trails comfortable to walk on.
Very nice well kept trails. Beautiful walk!
Over 2 mile hike, but a wonderful view of the River valley and bluffs.
Beautiful trails great camping.
Great trails. Beautiful views.
Best view of La Crosse in the region.
Kings bluff has a great view.
What a great state park. A little over an hour from Rochester, MN. There is great skiing, hiking, and views! Very scenic and a great place to enjoy the outdoors.
So beautiful. Literally my favorite spot to take pictures. Gorgeous scenes any time of day. Just take a moment to bask in the wonder surrounding us.
Great hike. Got some awesome fall pics
Great state park.love the hiking trails. I try to visit more often . Great place for fall colors.
After visiting every single state park in Minnesota, this one without a doubt was my favorite. Staff were very friendly, its close to Winona and Lacrosse if you dont want to camp, but yet it feels isolated. The campground is far away from the highway, and it feels as if you are in your own world. The views from this park are incredible, and the hiking trails are well maintained.
Beautiful campground, trees provide some privacy neighbors, nice facilities. Couple of short hikes with great overlooks, one of the Mississippi with occasional barges passing, very scenic.
Very easy access to the great views
Beautiful views. Nice hikes through woods and meadows.
What a beautiful place. If your looking for good views and plenty of hiking in shaded wilderness, this place is a perfect stop. Make sure to bring deets bug spray as the friendly organic deets free varieties do nothing to ward off the mosquitos. Clean showers well kept trails and roads. Humid area with frequent rains. 19$ a night.
Awesome place to camp! Awesome place to hike! A little confusing to light campers like us, but an amazing place to visit. Best state park in MN. Super biased. I live In WI.
Ever since we discovered this spot, we have been back at least twice a year. So much privacy, beautiful hikes, etc.
I GOT ENGAGED HERE!!!!!!! So needless to say that I love this place and will forever more. It had absolutely breathtaking views and wonderful scenery. Go here and dont think twice!
Wonderful views of the Mississippi River Delta. Fall colors were fantastic.
Soooo pretty, really enjoyed our stay here
Beautiful views and trails for hiking
Incredible views. Nice trails and roads. Camping sites could be nice but drive in site #1 does not have a flat place to pitch a tent other than the gravel pad for parking. Bathrooms are clean, 2 showers in each bathroom. Hot water available in bathroom. “Drinking water” from outdoor pipe is not very good, bring your own water.
The only good thing about this place is that you can see Wisconsin from here.
Good place to go camping or hiking. Theres some gorgeous views of the Mississippi once you get into the park a bit. Campsites are far enough away from each other and are well maintained.
One of my top favorite State Parks In MN! Breathe taking scenery with many trails and scenic overlooks of the Mississippi river!
Best view of the Mississippi River in the entire country. Gets quite buggy in the summer. Check out Winona for a quick day trip, its a lovely drive.Visited with...SarahMorganEmmaKoganErikColinPrestonLavian
I love the landscape.
Really cool park. Not too busy. A few trails to walk. Nothing too intense. Good park for a quick weekend or some easy camping. Lots of beautiful views of bluffs. Make sure to wake up early and take a cup of coffee to go watch the fog roll through the hills at dawn.
Beautiful park, great views and nice campsites! We keep coming back
Beautiful park, nice easy hiking with awesome views.
Beautiful views!! Have visited many many times and its just as beautiful every time no matter the season.
Its so beautiful here especially when it snows.you dont see things like this in southern Texas. Im happy with my new town
Lovely place
Nice trails
Great views!
Beautiful campground, private camp sites, and friendly staff. We had a great stay! Lots of hiking trails and good views.
Absolutely beautiful! All scenic views are worth the hike. The only downfall was the exuberant amount of bugs. Could just be this particular weekend. Would definitely return.
Though close to I-90 this place is off the beaten track. A narrow winding road leads to a picnic grove with ample parking, composting toilets, and drinking water. Short wooded trails lead to overlooks on a high bluff with impressive views of the Mississippi Valley below. Secluded wooded campground is also in this park. One star removed for the demand for a rather high fee ($7 for our out-of-state plate I recall), which was on honor system (no staff here on our visit) and required writing all sorts of information on an envelope before inserting it in a slot.
If you make the trek out to the overlook, the views are worth it!
