An absolute gem! I dont know how they have collected this beautiful body of work at this small museum, but dont miss the Minnesota Marine Art Museum! From the reference painting of Washington Crossing the Delaware, to European Masters and traveling exhibitions, there is something for everyone! Docents are fabulous and its a super experience for school groups as well. Bravo!

A great little museum that I was fortunate enough to stumble across by accident. The Hudson River School gallery was stunning and gave me a much deeper appreciation for the movement. Its a little stuffy for younger kids, but older kids will enjoy it. My only minor complaint is not allowing digital photography at all. I understand not allowing the use of flash but I would have liked to have gotten a picture of one or two of the pieces, especially having travelled so far.

Wonderful museum, beautiful displays of art. Entry prices really affordable and definitely something to do with your family. They have a very nice exhibition with art from the impressionist, I was delighted to see their work, too bad we are not allowed to take pictures in that exhibit. We enjoyed our first time there and will be back again. Highly recommend it. Keep up the good work!

What a gem! Had no idea this place existed. Pleasantly surprised with the amount of artwork on display for such a small town. Wouldve given it 5 stars but was quite disheartened by a staff who monitored the back rooms. Very hawkish behavior from the moment we stepped into the room. While discussing the artwork, after I think the third or fourth painting, she was almost breathing down our necks and snapped at us for having gotten close. Mind you, my friend and I are in our thirties and her mom is in her late 50s. Was completely uncalled for and even after the fact she continued to hover like a bird of prey. Thankfully that wasnt the case for the other staff present as they were very welcoming and did not partake in the same behavior.

A nice little museum with some classic works of art. On a minor critical note, the curation could have been a bit better, as the artwork descriptions were challenging to read given the font size and style (in addition to the gallery lighting).I paid a $1 entrance fee as a result of their Second Saturdays promotion. I would have been significantly more critical had I paid more (ultimately, I dont find it commands a higher price given the limitations of the marine artwork theme).

The Minnesota Marine Art Museum is a real gem. The collections include an impressive representation of various European painting styles - Monet, Manet, van Gogh, Picasso, and much more; the fabulous Hudson River School, and rotating exhibits. Large rooms with seating to sit and savor and so uncrowned. The one unusual thing is the mellow jazz over the PA - the volume is so low it’s hardly perceptible, and probably helps smooth over sounds like footsteps. MMAM is worth making Winona a day destination as 2 hrs. is more than ample time for most visitors.

$7 admission. Plan on 2 hours. Unbelievable items inside. If you have the slightest appreciation for paintings, go. I prefer sculpture and mixed-media so I generally skip galleries/ museums oriented towards paintings - but I was 100% pleased I went. Two irritating issues:1) If you bring kids, please keep them with you. I would encourage you to require them to stay at least 12 inches from the pieces, and keep their hands in their pockets - not touching the art.2) Please whisper - or at a minimum control your volume and recognize you are not the only ones present. There were several incessant talkers, selfishly vomiting out words at a rate of 200 per minute at 90 decibels. Oh thats pretty. Isnt that pretty? Honey! Honey! HEY! Isnt that pretty? Oh look at this. Look at this one. Honey? Come over here!. Isnt it pretty? ISNT IT PRETTY?...

Dont let the name fool you! There is so much more here than boat paintings! I bring my high school students here at least once a year. The Winona Marine Museum is an amazing gem. Fantastic art, cost is affordable ($3 for each student), and the building is much larger than you think. My classes self guide for 1 1/2 hours then have discussion and sack lunch on the patio. The museum has several parts to it- There are two revolving galleries that seem to feature regional artists. The shows I have seen have been very interesting to my students and one of the two seems to always be a photographer. There is another gallery room that houses early Picassos, Degas, Van Gogh, Corot, Matisse, Toulouse-Lautrec and many more. These are real paintings, not copies or prints. How this museum has them I do not know. They are amazing! The back gallery is huge and filled with detailed landscapes and also houses one of the Washington Crossing paintings, a favorite with the museums docents. The middle gallery has a Hudson River school section and a Georgia Okeefe landscape. This description is a fraction of what you will see and are my personal highlights. Oh ya, there are also lots of spectacular boat paintings !

This place is under-rated and taken for granted because Winona is a small town and no one expects to find an epic art museum here. But theyre wrong. Of all the museums Ive been to, this is one of the best of the best. Paintings from classical masters humbly hang in this museum. Impressionists, surrealialist, contemporary, modern, this museum had it all. From Monet to Van Gogh, the quality of the art here is mind-boggling. There is a definitive marine theme to most of the artwork and all of it is amazing. The only unfortunate part is that you are not allowed to take pictures.

It is an ancient Mariner,And he stoppeth one of three.By thy long grey beard and glittering eye,Now wherefore stoppst thou me?Why did I stoppst thou? I stoppst thou to tell you about The Minnesota Marine Art Museum of Winona.I do it as an old man did it for me, compelled, tugging at the sleeve of your coat, with a wild look in my eye as of one cursed or blessed by some riveting vision or come back from the terrible face of truth. For years this old man would come to the library I work at, and, as if under suchlike compulsion, he would ask me if I had been yet to The Minnesota Marine Art Museum.No. I would sadly say over the years. Over and over. And every time I did so his heart would seem to break before my eyes. He got older and older. So did I. And he never stopped asking. Then one summer my wife and I decided to go to The Minnesota Marine Art Museum in Winona.Wed heard good things about it.I for one had heard good things about it 271 times over the course of a decade.Oh they were all of them true! Every last good thing!I knew that one of the two existing versions of Washington Crossing the Delaware was there, and it is a striking painting indeed, full of clarity and moment and little historical details and inaccuracies. I knew they had a Van Gogh. I knew about the Picasso and the Monets. And they were all pretty great. But I knew about them almost as curiosities, like, how could this wee, insignificant museum in the middle of nowhere hold paintings by significant historical artists?I was looking at it all wrong. This would be a museum well worth visiting in any city in the world: Paris, Tokyo, Rome, New York. In a lovely, well-spaced building, echoing elements of rehabbed warehouse, northeastern seaside building of a couple hundred years ago, and an odd, subtle dash of prairie architecture, situated gracefully on the banks of the Mississippi, this museums one rule is that the paintings and art relate to, feature, and are inspired by water. If you think about it this probably still includes a good third of all paintings from art history. So its just about the right sort of restriction, giving focus and a connecting thread through everything without making one miss out on too many hot paintings. Does the Mona Lisa have water for instance? Yep. Starry Night? It might. I think so, but I cant tell for sure about those smeary blue lines in the foreground of the town. Birth of Venus? Yes, totally. Dalis Persistance of Memory? Thats the sea behind all those melting clocks! Girl with a Pearl Earring? No, sorry, no water there even if you could, theoretically stretch the pearl to being a object of the Sea, but you get my point. In fact, to truly impress you I will take a page from The Minnesota Marine Art Museum itself. I will restrict myself to the sea, telling you about artists in the museum whose last names begin withC.The best Courbet I have ever seen in my life, Source of the Lison, is a naturalistic picture of the mouth of a cave without horizon or sky. Cezanne, who sometimes feels too detached and cerebral for me, has a gorgeous riverside painting that is pure impressionist delight. Mary Cassatts picture of a girl reading (with a sliver of river out the window in the background) was a beautiful character study I only noticed in retrospect out of my wifes accolades. Corots landscape was a work of strangely dappled magic, dotted about with leaves, texture and definition as if they were light itself. And then also in the realm of sheer, painterly wizardry was Constables dark, oil smeared creek hollow scene, somehow a quiet wonder among vast dozens of all the other superb, watery landscapes. And finally we get the gloriously romantic and heart-stoppingly colorful Chagall, a dream of love that comes with a fish and flowers. And so I was converted. I too became a Mariner of the Minnesota Marine Art Museum, compelled to wander the world telling everyone I meet, wild-eyed, that you must see it. You must. Its a terrible curse, but it was worth it.
