A good size with various paths this is one of my favourites. Beautiful stream on the green route at the bottom of a reasonably steep gorge but well worth the effort

Nice and secluded. Trails are rocky, so hard soles sneakers would be a good idea. Beautiful lake and little islands in the lake make it scenic.

Great hiking trails! Very well marked, the only thing is that parking is somewhat limited, and people park with large gaps in between (as its not marked), so it can be difficult to get a spot.

This has recently become one of my favorite places for a hike. Some of the trails get pretty steep and the incline is a lovely workout. It’s a perfect place to take dogs for a walk especially bigger ones. I’ve been here during both winter and summer with them and the German shepherd loves it when the streams are a little more flowy. The yellow trail is closed off due to some beavers making damns. They flooded the place but hey Mother Nature is beautiful anyway. Definitely check it out if you’re into hiking.

Very good hiking trail . Varied terrain with hills, rivers, rocky, and lakeside. Very snenic with a few waterfalls and dams and a nice overlook of a valley. Lots of wildlife birds, helgramites, garter snakes. Only downfall was trails were a bit muddy and trail markings limited to blazes with no directional signs .

Apshawa Preserve is Located on Macopin Road in West Milford the preserve is very clean and cool also the preserve has a amazing waterfall and other little streams great for hiking or to walk you’re dog the trails take a long time to walk on cuz of all the rocks and it gets a little busy at times but the nature at this Preserve is amazing and also there are a lot of bears

Great for hikingNumber of well maintained trails, clearly marked. Beautiful lake in the middle.Interesting ruins and huge metal tanks right next to the green trail. The preserve is not big. Good maybe for a half day of hiking. But easy to get to.I imagine the relatively small parking lot fills up really quick on a good day.

This place was ideal: well marked trails, a number of running brooks, varied-difficulty trails, and scenic views.I took the blue trail all the way (one mile) to the dam, craning my neck for bears the whole time. Didnt see any. Did work up a sweat, but on the whole, the blue trail was moderate.I took that to the white trail, which climbs for about five minutes to a scenic viewpoint. I saw the whole reservoir and surrounding forest. Theres also the red trail, which goes around the whole reservoir.Saw lots of birds, including some large predatory birds, as well as one doe inside the gated area. A very peaceful hike.

Well marked medium difficulty hiking trails inside a 600+ acre preserve. Several beautiful vistas circling two small lakes. Yes, this is the area where the only recorded black bear fatality happened. Be bear aware, dont throw granola bars at the wildlife and youll be just fine.

There are 4 different trails and all are well blazed in different colors. The trails are not very difficult so it is a good place for families. I’ve walked the trails many times and I find it relaxing.  There is plenty of parking in the unpaved parking lot at the trailhead

Awesome place, very serene but then it all becomes as silent as when a black out occurs. It’s silence brings a thought of what could be lurking around. With no one else around that very thought sinks in and it makes you feel lost. You will in deed become stranded, but be ware... don’t wonder around for too long, bears are frequent in abundance in this forested area. There have been several recorded deaths of bears in this place. God knows how many haven’t been reported and recorded. Be safe out there!

10/25/15:This nature preserve is an excellent break into nature that offers well-maintained hiking trails, adequate trail markers, and scenic views of natural resources. In this fall season, the entire area was abundantly colorful with the change in leaf colors. In addition, The trail system is separated and organized in such a way that you can take longer or shorter hikes. I cant wait to go again

The park had a parking lot with 2 porta potty in place. Trail maps were availiable at the trail head by the parking lot. A fence surrounded most of the park, to keep deers and other large animals out of the reservoir area. Parking appears to be limited to 20 to 30 vehicles, 1st come, 1st served. My group was lucky, only one single vehicle was in the lot when we went in at noon time. We did not see anyone on the trails for the entire day. The blue trail was initially steep, then leveled off on the red trail, the green trail was was flooded out at the stream Ford area. It took us 20 minutes to locate a safe dry crossing. Overall, the trails were well maintained, with planks or bridges across most of the muddy areas. Due to recent rain, trails are muddy and the reservoir is overflowing. We had a fantastic time at the park that day.
