Went for lunch at Billys Chowder House Saturday afternoon. My wife and I started with a cup of clam chowder. It wasnt bad. Broth was thin with a nice blend of milk and butter. Clams were minced and it was loaded with diced potatoes. For main course I had the small baked haddock with baked potato (butter sour cream on side) and veg of the day( peas). Potato was pretty small. Veggies were a little tough. The haddock was well prepared. My wife got a large lobster roll w/ coleslaw and a small side of onion rings. Lobster roll had light mayo. For 28.99 expected more lobster. Wife cut roll in half to so it wouldnt be all bread. Bill was83$ not counting tip. A little pricy for mediocre.
The place is kinda cool, pretty retro. Our waitress Laura was very nice, very professional and friendly. My friend had a martini that she said was excellent. I had a local beer that was on special ( $4 !) and was VERY good. Called Daily honey wheat. She and I both had the Lazy Lobster, a shelled dish of lobster meat with butter, a potato and Cole slaw. The lobster, for the price was pretty skimpy. It was supposed to have come from a pound and a quarter lobster but there was no claw meat, and what was there besides the tail looked like lobster crumbs of some sort. LOL I would probably give this place another shot and order something else, because it felt like a good vibe and the staff was very pleasant. I guess I just ordered the wrong thing. Next time, Marie wants to try the fried oysters. I would go with the lobster stew which, from the description on the menu sounded delicious.
The food was great but the service was awful. Waitresss version of be right with you apparently meant waiting while she handled several other customers first and then took time out to gab with friends. All this while another server sat in a booth next to us and ate a bowl of soup before returning to the kitchen to sit back down with another cup. Requests for a glass of water and additional tarter sauce for fried fish we not filled and salt & pepper arrived at the table half way through our meal. With social distancing in affect I wouldnt call this a packed place, just one with really lazy employees.
Best chowder in Maine, not thick but creamy, so delicious. Lobster is fresh and sweet too, cooked to perfection. Doing a great job at a tough time. Service is excellent from a super staff. Did a great job to make a perfect safe social experience. Thank you for a great dinner!
Always reliably good food! We love their fried fish sandwich and clam chowder. You honestly cannot go wrong no matter your choice of dish. Family friendly, handicapped accessible, free parking on site, separate bar, fun atmosphere and hard-working friendly staff.
Good New England sea food. Absolutely no complaints. I will however say that the Clam Chowder was runny, not creamy, which put me off. But, it was definitely good. Really, you cant go wrong with a place that can pull off a runny Clam Chowder. My girlfriend had the lobster baked macaroni and cheese. Unbelievable.
Best Haddock chowder ever. Fish and chips perfect. Waitress wonderful. Sad that they are closing for the winter on 12/3. Will definitely be a regular.
Over priced. Had the baked stuffed Haddock. Stuffing was burnt all around the edges. Fish had no flavor. Didnt get rolls. Menus were plastic and unpleasant to touch. Maybe it was an off day. Fish bites, appetizer was good. And the chowder. Just avoids the $26 fish.
Very inconsistent !! We have ordered seafood chowder a few times and sometims its filled with seafood and other times not so much!Luckily we got oyster crackers this last time or it would have been just warm milk and potatoes! For the price we pay some consistency would be great!
I am giving 2 stars because the staff was friendly and the oysters were good. They should ashamed of serving the rolls that probably came from a supermarket bag. My husband asked for the lobster chowder. It came Lukewarm. He asked to warm up and they boiled probably in.the microwave. My swordfish was overcooked. No seasoning. I asked for olive oil i stead of butter and sourcream for the potato and they sent both not the olive oil. My husband ate the potato. His bowl of a chowder was a little bit bigger than.a cup. The selection of beers was restricted. The beers we asked were not available even though they own.the brewery. My recommendation. Dont go there. We paid a high bill for a mediocre dinner
We recently went to Billy’s for dinner. We ordered the stuffed baked haddock and it was delicious. My husband and I were very pleased with our meal, however we thought that their prices have increased significantly.
I never have a bad experience here. Its always awesome. Great food and great waitresses
We ordered online and did take out. The food was delicious, hot and well prepared. A little more money compared to some other restaurants in the area but worth it. Would definitely eat there again. Would love to dine in, place is in a great spot
$8.00 for Kraft macaroni and cheese! Thats an insult considering the rest of the menu. I politely talked to the manager and asked her if she felt that this was fair or right. She said others had complaints about this before. Perhaps now they will listen. If they are going to serve .$80 mac and cheese for $8.00, it should be labeled as such. They should consider changing the product or the price.Beside this, the steamers and tacos were good. Three star good. But they lost a star with the outrageous price for cheap food.
Recomended by our hotel. Nice outdoor seating on tentServer very attentive. Food was good, but we have had better at other Seafood places in Maine
Weve been coming to Billys for years and the chowder is always the best. But the little cup for $8-9 was unexpected. Lobster was great as well. But unfortunately the mussels and the cocktail shrimp were not what they used to be. Service was good, as always and view is great.
I had a cup of lobster stew (the best!) and the haddock bites. All of it was delicious, as was my cocktail. And those green beans are great! I live in Mass. and literally make the trip to Billys as often as I can. The food is SO GOOD!
Restaurant has beautiful views and is a super popular spot but their clam chowder is extremely watery (has great flavor but isnt very thick). Their lobster roll didnt have much flavor outside of the toasted hot dog bun it came on which was dissapointing especially at the price point but the fries it came with were delicious. The lobster was cooked perfectly according to my mother in law and she thoroughly enjoyed all parts of her lobster meal.
Excellent seafood, clams are to die for as well as chowders! Great wait staff, excellent service.
Food was terrific! Our waitress Brandi was the best! Funny and attentive she is an asset to your business
We like Billys. Nice spot near the ocean. Food good.
Great service and great food. Exactly the kind of seafood you are looking for after a day at the beach! The portions are not huge, but if you order chowder before it is the perfect amount!
The bacon-wrapped scallops were outstanding. Service was great. Very pleasant wait staff.
The lobster stew is amazing. The baked stuffed lobster was really good also. Great service.
Great service. Delicious food. Nice view of the msrsh out the window.
Food was great and reasonably priced. Danielle our server did a great job. My only recommendation is if you sit outside bring bug spray and you will get bit.
First stop for lunch while vacationing in Maine. Food was solid. Had a lazy lobster and some fried seafood. Service was good and the location is great. Definitely recommend.
The food was way overpriced.. My seafood stew was nothing more than a few chunks of fish, one tiny shrimp and milk broth. My wifes chowder looked like my stew.We waited almost 40 minutes to receive our food. My dish was ok, my wifes fish was hard and overcooked.Thank goodness for our waitress. She was awesome. She is the only thing that saved the night...
The food was good just disappointed that my lazy mans lobster, rice and fresh cooked green beans were just warm. I had the wait staff take the dish back and heat everything. The rest off the families meals were fine. Did watch a bald eagle at dinner catching fish. Ill try it again.
Their lobster stew was the best anywhere. Nice setting overlooking the water
Amazing Chowder took a bowl to go.Fish and chips are some of the best Ive ever had
Food and service was excellent .The shore dinner was huge and priced right. Great views and even a rainbow. The Lobster and steamers where excellent.
This is not a fancy place, NOT a greasy spoon and the decor is predictably tacky. That said this place was exactly what I was looking for. Good tasty food, wonderful staff and timely service.Go again I will when in the area. Also very easy to find.
Billys was one of the 1st restaurants we went to while in wells .and let me tell you they were very welcoming race didnt matter ..my food was really good .our server Brooke was awesome she pick really good dishes for us .I would definitely recommend Billys
Ladies and Gentlemen, again I travel all around the US, and when I flew to Maine, I had search for some restaurants. Well this by far is one of the worst dinning experience EVER... Super Expensive and NOT WORTH IT. The Clam Chowder was 100 liquid boil, fair taste but now Chowder to me and/or to anyone...The Shrimp (Individual Shrimp for a $1.00) were 100% frozen and no different from any supermarket Frozen Shrimp. No flavor and medium to large. Great disappointment. Macaroni & Lobster was horrible, no flavor and I had counted only 7 pieces of Lobster, again No flavor, No Salt... I had one bite and I could eat any more... if you happen to go to this restaurant, Do not listen to the waiters’s suggestions...Again, this place is super expensive and is not worth a penny...
This is a great place to eat and catch your favorite game. The staff and owners are wonderful. The food is great with much to choose from. Seafood abound and regular dishes as well. The views are breath taking and right along the waterfront and marshland wildlife preserve. This is a seafood sports bar. How could it possibly be better. Try the whole belly clams and the haddock!
GREAT FOOD A LITTLE PRICEY BUT THE FOOD IS WORTH IT
Food was awesome scallops was thee best!! Yummy
Overpriced. Chowder is watery. They dont allow guests to use the wifi.Only thing nice is the view
Excellent food & our waitress Brandi was the best! Highly recommend Billys Chowder House.
Always good food at Billys. Cant go wrong . Their chowgmders and fish stew are very good.
Lobster stew and seafood dinner was awsome
It was fine. I got the lobster stew and a lobster roll. The stew was excellent but the junior lobster roll was ridiculously small with little meat. I know it’s a junior roll but for 18 bucks I’d expect something more than 5 bites. Still would recommend though.
Awesome chowder, never had a milky broth chowder before but cant wait to have it again
My dish was cooked to perfection. Baked seafood sampler was deeelicious. Would do it again
A little on the pricey side of the scale.Overall very good food!
My first time there with 3. Great friends but I didnt have chowder I had lobster
Delicious food and nice atmosphere. Since our visit was during Covid-19, they followed all the safety measures necessary. Would love to visit again!
Clam chowder was excellent. Real chowder, not canned style. Lobster delicious. Views nice as well.
Awesome food, great staff, and I would highly recommend if your in Wells, ME...stop in.
I thoroughly loved this place. We went on vacation to Maine this year the first thing we did when we got there was stop here to eat. The food was so good the fish was cooked to perfectionthere was so much fish, also I couldnt eat it all. Its fish, thats a first for me! The waitress was great she made me laugh my daughter loved her. The drinks were good they werent watery and they had a nice little punch to them. If I go on vacation to Maine again this year Im definitely stopping here!
Terrible! Go elsewhere! We had the wrong lunch served. No drinks brought out, overcharged for the shrimp add on. Blah taste, too.
Absolute best haddock and fries in Southern Maine and its right on the Marsh in Wells on the way to the beach.
Billyss is a very pleasant place in a fantastic location. We had a few minor issues - they were out of the one beer that a person in our party really wanted to try, I was told no substitutions when I asked if I could pay extra for onion rings instead of fries with my sandwich - I dont really consider it a substitution when you volunteer to pay more to get something else thats listed on the menu. Anyhow, what we had was quite good. A few more non-fried options would be nice, especially since the baked seafood that they do offer is so good.
Started with the famous clam chowder which did not disappoint. We split a baked seafood sampler so we could save room for dessert. So glad we did! Blueberry shortcake sundae made with a WARM, HOMEMADE blueberry biscuit, blueberry ice cream, and whipped cream. OMG! it was amazing! Service by Danielle was perfect. Wonderful experience.
The food is always good. Waitstaff is pleasant.
Absolutely great seafood. Service was great. Would definitely recommend as a great lunch and dinner choice.
Clam chowder was the best Ive ever had.
Food was good service friendly, nothing special.
Phenomenal. I got a cup of lobster stew to start and there was more lobster than soup in the cup! Also got grilled swordfish with green beans and cole slaw. Swordfish was grilled and seasoned perfectly, with great char and still very moist inside. Cole slaw was best Ive ever had in a restaurant, it was very crisp and tasted home made. The green beans were fresh and steamed perfectly too. We sat in the bar area, which overlooks the Marsh. Will definitely be back if I find myself in Ogunquit again.
Good chowder. Enjoyed the clambelly dinner
This is the real deal seafood restaurant in Maine that you would expect! Atmosphere is nice and clean with charm. The seafood is fresh, not greasy, and the portions are fair! When you order Fried clam plate you get a plate full of clams, not some clams over fries! Recommend and will definitely be back!
Great food - we had the lobster mac and cheese.
Lazy Mans lobster was good, the apple crisp dessert was amazing! Thank you for the fresh pot of coffee. Waitress was ok
This was a second choice when our first was an hour wait, this one was a 10 minute wait. I now know why. The rum punch bucket was FULL of ice and very small for a bucket and 18.00!!!!! It was suggested, wish we passed!! The appetizers were expensive....10.00 for small onion rings??? They were ok but 10.00?? Not worth it! The seafood stew, 11.49 for a small cup.. the haddock special and dinner was dry, green beans were cold, greasy and weird flavor. The whole belly fried clams were ok but arrived to our table cold. Service was slow, but ok. We probably wont be going back, there are tons of other choices in the area.
Great food, best fries, nice view over the marshes
Billys has a good rep. I wasnt wowed and I left convinced it was just an off day in the kitchen
Food is good prices are reasonable service is very friendly lots of parking
Friendly staff. Very good baked scallops! Lots choices fried or baked!!
It was open. That was excellent because we were hungry. Front of house was very friendly: check and check. Wait staff was a little slow but kept looking back in on us, so still happy. Lobster roll was on the menu: brilliant! $26 for a large roll....er, wait, what? $13 for a calamari appetizer? $9 for a *hot dog* (why was that even on the menu)?? We baulked. Would this be a dinner to remember for the breathtaking food and not just the bill? We hoped so; alas, in vain. It was pedestrian; stingy; and disappointing. We will not be back.
Billys was a great find. We just moved to the area and finally had a chance to try them out. The service was outstanding, and the food was great! Decent sized portions and timely service. We would definitely recommend Billys!
1st time there and wont be the last. Great service and food was delicious.
Great food and scenery. Also a very friendly staff.
Great food, great service, and practicing great social distancing.
Awesome place beautiful views and good margaritas and food !!
Way over priced for the quality of their food. The clam chowder was the worst we have ever had. Dont know how they won any awards. 7.95 for a cup of watery, tasteless chowder. The only thing we like was the view.....So many other places to get good food ..
Overpriced, small portions and definitely not a 4. Had the smallest pour of a mediocre at best wine for a $9 fee. Oh and the view if you have one is of a swamp.
One of the few places you could eat in a sit down outside really enjoyed that a great wattres from Milwaukee was very nice to gloria and myself
Great food and a very pleasant waitress.
Wednesday buck a shuck. Had 40 oystersAwesome
Always a great meal amd dining experience at Billys!
Tiffany was an excellent waitress and the food was great too
