Lots of history here. Wonderful home from the 1860s era. First Kindergarten building, old barn building. Be sure to explore the kitchen in the lower level and be thankful for modern kitchens with microwaves and food processors. Make sure you climb the top of the spiral staircase and ponder the view they must have had in 1850s.
Love it great history and I actually preached the gospel of Jesus Christ to the tour guide!
I have gone to this museum several times throughout my life. My Grandparents lived a couple of blocks from it in Watertown, so we would visit it about every other year in my youth. I was always in awe by the wonder of the past. I am fifty now, and I would like to see it even more.
A beautiful home turned museum dedicated to the start of the town and the history of the area. Also on the grounds is the First Kindergarten building. The Historical Society has done a wonderful job.
If youve never been to a house built prior to 1900, take the time and go see it. Tour guide was very knowledgeable.
Historically a Gem in the Area! Friendly, knowledgeable staff! Our tour guide needs to slow her speech down a notch to understand more clearly! Very enjoyable!
This is the house that put Watertown, WI on the map! Its a very interesting eight-sided house that has turned into quite the tourist attraction. Travelers from outside of the country will be pleased to know that Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport is just a little over 50 miles away, a distance that can be covered in less than an hour if traveling by car. They have both Thrifty and Budget rental car agencies at MKE for your convenience.
Have been here before and liked it. However this time we went there (based on what we saw on the internet) and found out that it was actually closed although information said that it was open. Very frustrating as we had the children along anxious to see it and no other plans for that day. Feel that they need to do a better job of publishing their hours
I have been in love with this Historical Landmark since I was a little girl.I would love to own it!
The history is absolutely great my ten-year-old granddaughter enjoyed it so much was able to ask a lot of questions and our tour guide was extremely good very knowledgeable of the home. I would definitely recommend taking the time 2 look at this historic Landmark in Watertown Wisconsin.
Saw the annual performance of their Christmas show they have. The show was A Christmas Carol and the actors performed throughout the house and it was probably the best way to spend a few bucks this Holiday that I can think of. The actors were incredible and the show was very personable. Will be back next year! Hidden gem.
It is a wonderful piece of history, full of valuable information for travelers and locals alike.
Friendly and knowledgeable tour guide. House is nicely furnished with original and period furniture.
Very good.
Love the history on this house so neat to go through
It is a lovely piece of history. Too bad it js closed most of the time. I wasnt able to go inside because it was only open on the weekends
If you love history, a marvel of architecture and tour guides dressed in period clothes, you cant miss The House!!
Enjoyed the history lesson. Docent was first-rate.
Very nice tour. Many original pieces in the house, the rest were all of the time period. Beautiful spiral stairs; but alot of steps to climb if youre not very able. Over all; very interesting, excellent tour. You get to go in all of the 5 stories of the house.
I love history and it is a very historical house.
Interesting built house and historical memorabilia.
Beautiful place
Great spot to check out in the amazing town of waterton
Awesome house plus, the first kindergarten?!? Cmon.
Fascinating place, lots of stairs, great tour guide.
Definitely worth a visit.
Unique experience. A visit well worth it if you find architecture fascinating.
Very interesting and great history !
Interesting, a little lacking in real history. Pictures of people that are not family members, smells overwhelmingly musty worse than a typical older home. Hot as hell, and many many stairs. Blocked off with ropes which is necessary BUT over 4 people, forget it, way too crowded and hot. Not worth the money.
We were there for their annual outdoor antique & art show. It was a good mix of mostly good quality stuff. We bought two old barn loft ladders from a sweet, headscarf-wearing octagenerian who had lots packed in her big white van. She was very knowledgeable & drove a hard bargain. The weather was great, but mosquitoes were a bit annoying. Octagon House, built in 1854, is a five story brick mansion, given in the 1930s to the fledgling local history group. LOTS of interesting history & artifacts remain here. Worth a few hours, even when nothings going on on the lawn.
Cool place with a cool story.
A magical place with so much history to tell and authentically preserved.
Great history.
Excellent example of period building, furniture, and clothing in this unique structure. Knowledgeable friendly staff. Additional information available from the Watertown Historical Society on-site.
Toured the house today with my Mom (it was her 2nd time there) and my 10 year old. I was very impressed and in aww about the history inside those walls!! I will definitely be there to visit again and I plan to take my husband with me next time!!
Interesting architecture and history

Beautiful piece of Watertown history. Well worth a visit!
Interesting historical site in an otherwise unremarkable town
Unique collection of local Watertown history, including Americas first Kindergarten, the plank road tollway of the 1800s, and of course, the huge Octagon House and all its porches, doors and innovations (for the time).
I love visiting Watertowns past at the Octagon House.
Fun and full of interesting things.
