An excellent sculpture and Im so glad the brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. spearheaded this effort to erect this monument in the nations capital. As a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated I am sure I share the pride of every D9 Greek to see this testament to a man of such great stature in word and deed. The struggle continues but we will never forget the light shone at such a pivotal point in our nations history. Whenever I think of the push towards greater equality in this more perfect Union I am reminded of his quote, the time is always right to do what is right.
With this faith, we will be able to hew out of the mountain of despair... a stone of hope. - MLK.Pretty incredible memorial and relatively new addition to The National Mall. It was added in 2011 and is the first monument in the National Mall to honor an African American. The design was taken out of his, I have a dream speech, regarding a line which speaks of carving a stone of hope from a Mountain of Despair.Youll enter that Mountain of Despair, and enjoy a list of quotes and words from Dr.King, while his image is captured on the stone of hope.Very incredible memorial located right on the basin of the Potomac. Spectacular views of the surrounding memorials and areas from this one as well.An absolute must stop location while exploring The National Mall and Washington DC in general.
The whole entire park is gorgeous! Miles of scenic views with tree lined streets and paths that provided a lot of shade for refuge from the sun.The MLK monument is something to be seen in person like everything else there. You enter the area between two massive stone pillars. The monument is facing out overlooking a large body of water. Like all the other monuments there it had its own unique feel and views. Seeing it in person does it justice because of the sheer size. They truly are monumental. This is one of my favorites because it serves as a reminder of our great nations history and struggles that we are still facing as we know it.
This is hallowed ground. There is a powerful presence at the Martin Luther King Memorial. Its an honor to experience it and read the powerful quotes as he spoke of true justice. I highly recommend as a must see and a must experience if you are anywhere near the Washington, DC area. Ive visited many times and it never gets old. Youll be insoired.
Beautiful monument commemorating MLK. It is incredibly powerful to be in the presence of this sculpture. A must see when in DC. It is surrounded by quotes of his etched on the walls leading to where the statue stands in the center (there are multiple points of entry all leading to the statue in the center). This being such an important symbol I almost wish it didnt feel so hidden.
Please go at sunset. The experience is just beautiful...even how MLK looks at Jefferson is priceless. This has quickly become my favorite landmark in DC. It is incredibly powerful, and extremely motivational. Please, please, please take your family to this one
Right by the water. Featuring quotes that are still so wise and useful and relevant in our world today. A striking monument to an amazing person.
Absolutely breathtaking and gorgeous. My fiancée and I visited in July 2019 and got plenty of great pictures with the giant statue-sized Rev. MLK, Jr. Beautiful water and scenery in the neighboring area as well. I kind of got emotional standing in front of him. Forever grateful for everything he stood for and everything he did for the country and the world.
It was not alot of people on a weekday at 4pm. That was shocking but I guess since school is closed, no field trips. Parking was close and you have up to 3 hours on the meter. Walk across the street and you can take more beautiful pics at the DC War Memorial
Beautiful, serene, surreal. Those are the adjectives that came to mind as I approached this beautiful monument for the first time. Standing in front of the statue alone would be worth the price of admission. Add in the inspiring and relevant quotes from this mighty man, and you find yourself awestruck. Please people, if you visit Washington, D.C., visit the Dr. Martin Luther King memorial. You will love it!
Very profound and serene at the same time. Just beautiful at night. Great views
Pleasant atmosphere, well maintained. I was a little nervous walking the canal area and having to duck under the tree branches, and had to keep a close eye on my young son, not to fall into the water
This is one of the most moving and beautiful monuments in the entire world. It is a very beautiful site that I have been to on multiple occasions and each time it is an inspiring experience.
Great experience. Love reading tge quotes, taking pictures and wTching tge sun set while admiring this statue.
Beautiful place - Very powerful imagery too. A must see place!
This is one of the less often visited Monuments, but it is totally worth the 5 minutes it will take you to swing by. It is right across the street from the Lincoln Memorial and only a short scenic walk around the Basin from the Jefferson Memorial. It is absolutely gorgeous and inspiring. You will have some great photo ops here as well since it is right on the Tidal Basins edge and in view of the other taller Monuments. Dont try to park. Uber or Metro to the area and then walk. There are lots of other things to see in the immediate vicinity. Do it! And check out the FDR memorial thats right next to it as well!
Amazing addition to the memorials - gorgeous spot on the water, quotes etched into the wall, impressive stone carving, GREAT gift shop with clean bathroom
This is the Lookout Mountain of Tennessee/Georgia border at Chattanooga. Martin Luther King referenced it in his famous I Have a Dream speech. Interesting take on King. Excerpts from the speech are chiseled into the monument stone. Google the full text. Also part of the premises is a multi-storey sculpture of King himself. Only becoming that a great sculpture should memorialize a GREAT man!It helps that the Memorial is on the Potomac River. Go there in the evening and watch the sunset. While doing so, dont forget to say hi to all the ducks that come by at the evening hour!
Very inspiring. The design of the Memorial captures the magnitude of the man. First time visiting and would definitely go back.
There are so many reminders of a man who fought for many of the freedoms I now enjoy. The place is well laid out. Wonderful to experience
What a national treasure.**Out of the Mountain of Despair, a Stone of Hope**Located in downtown Washington, DC, the memorial honors Martin Luther King, Jr.s legacy and the struggle for freedom, equality, and justice. A prominent leader in the modern civil rights movement, Dr. King was a tireless advocate for racial equality, working class, and the oppressed around the world. The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial is located in West Potomac Park next to the National Mall in Washington, D.C., United States. It covers four acres and includes the Stone of Hope, a granite statue of Civil Rights Movement leader Martin Luther King carved by sculptor Lei Yixin.
What a great place to visit! Monument is beautifully sculpted and situated at a very nice place. Benches besides water have a nice view to sit down and relax with family. It was a hot summer day when we visited and a gentleman offered us cold water bottles. I am very thankful to the people of United States of America. Very loving, kind and hospitable people. Would definitely visit US again :)
Really cool to see the huge statue of martin luther king jr.
Reading his quotes, in this calm atmosphere that everybody can feel is a nice experience
Such a beautiful place, Thank you Mr. King for inspiring us to fighting for human right, civil right for our nation.
Highly recommend visiting MLK memorial. You can read some of his most important messages he gave through his lifetime.
The sculpture is just stunning and if you’re as lucky as we were, you might be able to read peacefully MLK’s quote. A very well designed memorial.
Very inspiring monument. Lacked the Be respectful please sign that is posted by other monuments. Thought that was interesting.
Ive been trying to get here since I was a teenager, and I made it here during a pandemic just to pay my respects to this amazing man of American History. Thank you MLK ALSO VISITED HIS HOME AND MEMORIAL IN ATL, GEORGIA.
Didnt go here, stopped at the light & didnt know it was here.
Amazing statue and a host of meaningful MLK quotes from his various speeches.
Truly fitting memorial for this principal force of the civil rights movement. Open and accessible, but with an ascendant feel, the statue is the centerpiece of the park. However, the natural elements (stone, water, trees) help define the rest of the story along with 15 meaningful but short quotes helping diffuse visitors throughout. But, youll keep coming back to the statue and the views.
I enjoy reading the quotes found on the wall of the Memorial. They cause one to think about justice and peace. The call to serve the greater good. The memorial has places to sit and either look at the reflecting pool or the face of Martin Luther King and think.
This is an extraordinary tribute to the most significant civil rights leader since Abraham Lincoln. Extremely well done
This memorial is one of my favorites. You enter through the Mountain of Despair and are greeted by a Stone of Hope. To either side, perpendicular to the entrance, are two walls. Each has quotes about rights and freedoms, and also equality. The side of the Stone of Hope that faces the Tidal Basin is a carving of Martin Luther King Jr. And for map geeks like myself, the outline of the memorial from an aerial view is like a peace dove.
Martin Luther King Jr. has been so influential in America’s history. This is such a beautiful monument to help commemorate the great and mighty changes he has brought to our country. The design is impressive and the art work is flawless. There are also many inspirational quotes.
Amazing visit, the monument is breathtaking. Wished it hadn’t been so cold would have loved to have visited more of the area.
Beautifully done memorial. The quotes remind you how elquent and poignant MLK was.
Absolutely Beautiful in every way. What a testament to a movement that continues currently.
A fitting monument for a man of great importance to the civil rights movement and social justice. The monument about 30 feet high looks like a large granite mountain and Doctor King moving forth from the monolith standing with his arms crossed looking across the Tidal Basin. Around the walls of the memorial are quotes from some of his famous speeches.
This was my first time here as we were in town visiting for another reason and decided to stop by for a look. Its an amazing memorial.
Good man. Clean site. Good for photography.
Awesome monument that overlooks the lake. MLK was an iconic leader that helped to bring about major civil rights changes. The sculpture is beautiful and well worth the trip. Quite epic.
Beautiful memorial “Stone of hope” of Martin Luther King. Interesting design: it’s not finished at the bottom to show that M. L. King didn’t finish his work. It’s carved by sculptor Lei Yixin. The inspiration for the memorial design is a line from Kings I Have A Dream speech: Out of the mountain of despair, a stone of hope.
Like all the monuments you have to stop by Martin Luther Kings too! It’s such a great metaphor. I found it somewhat interesting that the statue was build with stone from China brought over from the Chinese artist who won the job for the display.
Love the place. The carving is amazing and worth your time to take a look.
Dont miss out on this amazing sight! Tucked away right around the corner from the Lincoln memorial you will find this phenomenal memorial overlooking the water! A definite must see
Very inspirational! Fellow travelers and guests were friendly and enjoyable.
We visited the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial on our last trip to Washington. This was my first time seeing the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial in person. I have seen pictures of it online, but I wanted to see it in person. The pictures dont do it justice. You need to see it in person to experience it yourself. I was impressed by this memorial. Ill be back again. Hopefully, I will bring my kids or my grandkids next time.
Wonderful experience. Still able to visit during the pandemic. In a beautiful park
Though there may be good reasons to object to the “poetics” of the sculpture itself, the entire monument is a must-see. I just wish the Park Service would keep this spot as clean as the others!
Loved it! Beautiful art work amazed of the actual look of his standing power.
Impressive, definitely makes an impression. Beautifully done tribute to Martin Luther King. Interesting to see his inspirational quotes written on the walls too. All of this together makes you think about what an achievement he, and the whole movement initiated by him, did. It was amazing to see in person. A must see while in Washington D.C.
My family and I love the experience we try to visit every time we are in D.C., its just so beautiful.
Great way to honor those who stood up for equal rights. Sculpture is amazing and there is a time capsule to be opened within the next few decades or so. You can see the Jefferson memorial from here as well.
It was a great experience to visit the memorial of such a great man. The statue is amazing and also his quotes along the wall are too.
Awesome. Simply put. Great memorial for a great man.
A wonderful Memorial to a man who was a mouth piece for justice and freedom for the African American people. So all men could walk side by side equally and not to be judged by skin colour, but by their character and works. Everybody also should visit the African American history museum in DC, his Birthplace in Atlanta and Lorraine Hotel where he was killed in Memphis.
We got married hereWhat a beautiful place to tour and visit. I will never forget it
An experience I was so glad to Finally enjoy
Visited the memorial at night; it was well lit and there were very few other people around which was nice. The format of the monument was beautiful, with many quotes that are continue to be relevant today.
The stone statue of Doctor Martin Luther King Junior is very well kept. The area in which his statue sits is serene and overlooks the water.
I visited the Dr. Martin Luther King memorial at night - its incredibly well lit, and I think it was the best way to see it. The monument itself is an interesting concept - from a mountain of despair, a stone of hope. The quote wall was actually my favorite part - very inspiring.
Needed a recharge! Xo The world is such a mess yet his dream fuels me!
Saw it during the cherry blossom blooms, looked beautiful amongst the pink and white blossoms
This beautiful memorial to an amazing man sums up his whole movement. The sculpture was made from a mountain and shaped into his body, it was not finished as to show that civil rights movements are never finished. This is a very inspiring place that you should take your family there at least once to show them all the struggles he had to go through and what he accomplished.
This memorial is honestly grand! Its great to be honouring a national figure in such a great way. The rocks are all so big and the amount of precision and effort and time put into it is very visible. And the view onto the water is also very great, though the sidewalk around it is often flooded, you van take some great pictures there, especially with the blossom trees. Great place and definitely something you wouldnt want to miss when going to Washington DC!
An amazing experience.
So amazing. Loved all of the wonderful quotes and the cool larger than life sculpture of Dr. King. A Stone of Hope.
Visited on New Years Eve 2019 and though a little chilly was still a great memorial. Peaceful area with great views around the waterfront.
Beautiful walk through this memorial during the cherry blossom peak bloom- but it is also peaceful year round. Access to the basin - views of Jefferson memorial and Lincoln memorial.
Stunning awe inspiring memorial. The pictures dont do it justice. If youre in DC, stop by for a sec and check it out. Also some beautiful quotes along the wall that promote social justice, peace and overall goodness. Loved it
The MLK memorial was so much better than I expected. The location is great and the scenery is awesome. The detail put into the memorial and statue is amazing. This was my first time visiting the memorial and it was so worth it!
Amazing experience. The kids love it. Very nice to be able to finally see this. Our goal next time is to get tickets to the African American museum. This is another sightful and insightful monument that we visited on our visit to Washington, DC. You can’t go wrong. Tour them all in order to get the full experience.
Wonderful experience.
The concept of passing thru hill of desperation and seeing stones of hope is amazing! Depicting the struggles of Martin Luther King. The whole park is so calming and breath taking.
Beautiful spot. I went during the march on Washington & got chills even though it was a million degrees.
What an amazing Monument. I cant believe I waited until my second trip to DC to go to this one. It is a MUST SEE! There are walls with quotes from Dr. king around the park, and a beautiful view of the water, and of course the breathtaking and gigantic statue of MLK. This place is touching and special!!
Proud to finally see Dr. Martin Luther King jrs Memorial. Astounding! Bigger than life, but humbling as well! A great man!
Love this area. Best views in DC
This is one site you have to visit while in Washington, DC! The statue of Martin Luther is so POWERFUL! Its like you can feel the magnitude of what the King was like while standing by his statue. Along the wall you can read different quotes from the King himself. There is a beautiful view of the water as well. Go and visit, its a must! Also, you can visit the MLK store that is near his memoral to get your stamp for you National Passport Book and other memorals around the area.
Such an amazing tribute to the legacy of Dr. King.
Such positive energy and momentous place. You have to visit.
A very Godly man with such a strong message from God
Beautiful memorial! I loved reading the quotes on the wall from the great Martin Luther King Jr.!
At must see for DC that area of the Mall is simply beautiful and not overcrowded. I love the quotes and we even tried to move the mountains. Theres a gift shop across the Street & it steps away from other memorials.
