Great experience! Lots of interesting information about spies you already know as well as some that you may not know. History is explained to flesh out what they were doing, along with short film clips portraying them. There are lots of displays showing spy equipment, too. There are interactive screens set up where you are assigned a spy name and you are given a back story, which you need to remember. You are then assigned a mission, and more screens update you on developments and clues. They suggest that you limit your stay to 2 hours, but you will want to stay much longer!
Super cool and interesting Museum to visit. A TON of information from old technologies and exhibits to recent almost current day happenings. If you want to experience most of it I would easily say 3-4 hours in here could get you there. You get the opportunity to become an Agent as you walk through the museum and do different tasks on computers throughout the tour. This is a fun way to also practice the things you have been reading and makes it a bit more of an activity rather than just standing and reading items. Perfect for kids and adults as well, nothing too crazy.
I did not have very high expectations of this place, but was pleasantly surprised by how fun and engaging it was. It is a great activity for a variety of ages. Exhibits were well done and the interactive activities of pretending to be a spy as you go through the museum made it all the more enjoyable. This is not designed to be a one hour run through museum, so make sure to budget at least a couple hours to go through it, even with kids. Very glad we went, and will probably go back again on our next trip to DC. I would recommend this Museum.
There are a number of reasons to like the International Spy Museum. First, it is in a brand new building which feels so much more spacious than the old one. You are also able to get some details on spy incidents that you have heard about such as some big double crosses! It’s a fun way to spend the afternoon esp if it is hot and humid outside in DC.
This is a positively amazing and enlightening experience. See an incredible collection of REAL artifacts with only a few very well made recreations mixed in. This educational experience spans centuries and also manages to cover events within the last four years. Hard, honest truths. Ideas spawned by necessity and from truly amazing, and some devious if not evil, minds. Wonderful. In four hours I managed to take in whole lot of information. A few days would have been even better.
Family and I visited last Saturday and enjoyed our family outing. My 8 year old really loved the exhibits, the interactive games, and spy mysteries designed for all investigators to solve. My only issue is that I wish there were an extra floor for more engaging, interactive activities and more exhibits.
Great experience! Did a great job of making things safe during covid... super cool place
Awesome for adults too! This museum easily has 3+ hours of fun content and interactive exhibits. Awesome awesome and very worth the $25
I visited this unique museum in the last week of September, 2020. The crowds were sparse and it seemed like myself and the other visitors had the place to ourselves. The first thing that you need to know is that this is an immersive experience. Your level of participation in your mission(s) will greatly impact the amount of time you spend here, as well as how much time it takes to fully appreciate all the levels, stops, displays and assignments that are a part of your mission. The museum is staffed by young people in their early 20s. Most everyone working is also playing a role in the experience. Everyone I encountered took their role seriously and many displayed a great sense of humor and acting ability.if that doesnt sound like your cup of tea, then you can still enjoy the museum on your own, at your own pace. Whether you are participating as a spy or going your own way, youll want to carve out about two hours depending on the crowds.I wont give away any of the surprises. Sometimes I dont like to do the role play thing, but in this case, I thoroughly enjoyed myself and I really learned a lot about the history of international espionage. There are dozens of interactive exhibits that will keep you intrigued and engaged. The museum itself was immaculately clean. As mentioned, the staff were all friendly and really into their roles. Everyone I observed seemed to be having a great time. Some of the stuff may be too heavy or complex for small kids, but there are enough shiny objects (think science museum) that will even keep the youngest engaged. All pandemic protocols were followed. It also is reasonably priced. I had a really good time and would encourage everyone to visit. Even if you think that a spy museum wouldnt be that interesting, youre sure to have a good time.Have fun!
Great place, better than old location. Very thorough detail on various stories and even had a Cyber section with an infinity room that was pretty neat. Deducted 1 star for price ($25) plus 23$ for parking if you take note than 2 hrs (which you will, and means you cant park on the street). Dont drive here and take your time, worth the trip!
Great time! Exhibits are interactive as you test your spy skills. Also an education throughout history; poison umbrella, listening devices in lamps and secret radio transmitters hidden in suitcases and shoes. Receive a mission brief, follow the clues left by your handler, to tour final debrief.
State of the art museum with fascinating material and information. We took a private group tour that was so informayive and enjoyable. Will definitely be back!
Amazing museum, definitely a must see!! They take distancing precautions, provide a stylus to interact with the exhibits, and and have timed entry. You can spend a LOT of time here, they have many interesting and interactive exhibits, and you have a recurring personal mission that you participate in throughout! To see everything I would say at least 2+ hours to be thorough, but you can also bounce around. Plenty to see and enjoy, highly recommend if youre even slightly interested in the history and tradecraft of espionage.
Very engaging exhibits covering a range of security, intelligence, and other topics. The mission aspect added a fun interactive element. Good planning for safe distancing, though the touch stylus broke part way through. Not crowded on a Monday morning.
The International Spy Museum is a private non-profit museum dedicated to the tradecraft, history and contemporary role of espionage, featuring the largest collection of international espionage artifacts currently on public display. The museum opened in 2002 in the Penn Quarter neighborhood of Washington, D.C., and relocated to LEnfant Plaza in 2019.The museum had an interactive exhibit called Operation Spy, where visitors assumed the roles of covert agents and participated in a one-hour Hollywood-style spy simulation, in which they moved from area to area and were faced with puzzles, tasks, motion simulators, sound effects, and video messages as they worked through a mission involving the interception of a secret arms deal involving a nuclear trigger. This activity had a separate admission fee and separate entrance from the museums permanent exhibit. This activity is currently unavailable at the SPY Museum.
Very fun place, great distancing and sanitizing. Everyone gets a stylus you use for all touch interfaces, completely touch free experience
Second time! First was at the old location. I loved it then and now, this new location and set up has me wanting to go a third time. 3 hours wasnt even enough. The interactive mission aspect was really enjoyable. My 50 year old parents had a great time and my dad wants to come back! Would love to bring nieces and nephews (probably 12 years+) as well. Worth the $$.
So good. Took the kids and spent over 2.5 hrs here. Lots of interactive lessons and secret missions!
Great fun and very informative. Arriving at opening time, 10 AM, with our prepurchased tickets on my phone, we were treated warmly, warned to keep our masks on properly and told that we should count on spending two hours in the museum. Five hours later, we emerged from the full immersion experience already planning to return to see what weissed!
Ive never seen a place like this! I never knew spies were such a huge part of history. The recreations of Mata Hari and others were super cool to see. My 14 year old daughter was glad this was where we took her for her birthday! I also really enjoy the infinity room and the interactive games throughout.
Very cool and interactive museum, wish I stayed longer, lots to see.
I hadnt been since it was in Chinatown...this experience was amazing! They hook you up with a stylus to interact with the interactives because COVID...there were PLENTY of hand sanitizers placed everywhere and we entered in small, time reserved groups...Word of advice: Eat before you go on a Sunday. All LEnfant Plaza restaurants were closed except Charlies and there is no café inside of the museum. Expect to take at least 2 hours...
Its a real cool place with a lot of info and its really fun all the games they have. If you go to Washington go there
This museum is amazing! Very interactive, engaging and educational.. the staff is great and I really appreciate their enthusiasm.. great experience!!
Cant wait to go back. Went with young children, while they did have fun, there is a lot of reading. Definitely going back without the kids so that I am able to enjoy and read all the exhibits. Very interesting. Makes me think that I could be a spy
This was so interesting learning of all the spies around the world. I had so much fun
My wife and I had a wonderful time going through the museum. There were great exhibits and we really enjoyed the “mission” we were sent on. 10/10 would recommend!
This place was amazing with so much to see! Staff present was very friendly and helpful throughout the whole experience. We were amazed with the amount of memorabilia there was. So many different exhibits with a lot to learn. Proper precautions were also taken for COVID guidelines allowing for an amazing time and staying healthy. Hand sanitizer was provided throughout as well which allowed for proper hygiene. There is a shop below as well that features many different items to purchase which is amazing and definitely caught my attention. Overall an amazing place to learn history regarding spies and just more about our government and others.
Would have been great if we weren’t hunted by security the whole time we were here. It was the craziest thing. My child’s face mask kept falling below her nose and the employee threatened to have us removed if he had to ask us again. The only reason I stayed was because my little girl was having a good time. I’ve never been harassed like that before. Not cool after paying $25 each.
Mind Blowing experience. Plethora of information and interactive displays. There was SOOOO much to see that IF I return to DC I will definitely want to visit again....but think better about parking, because when I left, my car was broken into . But it is a great place to visit and thankful to the Men and Women who contributed to the protection of this country.
Its not a tipical (Boring) museum it was a really fun experience! With proper social distance & sanitizing. Regarding parking I parked on the street opposite the museum it was much cheaper then the parking offered,
Top notch museum! The museum staff has done an incredible job adapting in the pandemic, very spacious, clean, and efficient layout! Tons of engaging interactive exhibits, interesting historical items on display, films, and a huge gift shop with cool merchandise! I highly recommend this museum!
Awesome history of spying as well as tons of interactive stations to keep you on your spy toes. Plenty of knowledge to gain for anyone that visits. Make sure you brush up on your spy knowledge.
We made reservations to visit at the end of August. We were content with the safety precautions in place. Everyone wore their masks, and they gave you a stylists to use on the interactive displays. We found this to be difficult on some of them, but there was also sanitizer everywhere. We enjoyed our visit, and would recommend.
This is a great outing! Everything was well done and extremely interesting. There are a great deal of interactive things throughout the museum as they give you a new identity and a key card to help you test your memory skills as you go through the museum. There is a great deal to read and see within the museum and if you want to read everything it will take you the best part of the day. They go from World War I through the modern age, with a few earlier historical events in the first large room. There are two main floors in the building that contain the museum and the ground floor was mainly the ticket office and the museum store full of interesting goodies! I would definitely make this a must stop on your trip to DC!
The museum staff asked customers ( spies) to skip certain floors in December 2019,an unpleasant surprise. One needs two days entrance to completely enjoy without become overbearing. This place lacks a theater style space where kids can be spies in action.. Otherwise very informative but not in a fun way..
What a fun experience! The interactive mission as you progress through the exhibit halls was very engaging, and the artifacts that they have on display were fascinating! I would recommend anyone who has enjoyed a spy movie to visit here and see how its really done.
An awesomely fun and interactive stop to add to your museum bucket list
Really well done. Love the interactive nature of the exhibits. Definitely worth the trip. You can get through all the exhibits in 2 to 3 hours. But 4 or 5 is recommended. Good for kids maybe 9 or 10 and older.
The tickets were a little expensive, but it was a very informative and fun museum! You take on a new identity and get a backstory, profession and follow your mission and its progress through different touch screen stations throughout the exhibits. The staff are really nice, too. I would probably return in a few years if I get the chance. We arrived 10 minutes after our scheduled time, but that wasnt an issue at all. Also, you can find street parking right outside the museum if it isnt too crowded (2 hours for $4.60, metered).
This place is really cool. They start off by giving you a card and a stylist then you go around the upper part of the building reading all about spus and how they worked. They also had interactive things you could do to test your spy skills. This place was really cool but it did take a few minutes at these interactive spots so some time so there is a quite a bit of waiting.
Had such a fun time at the Spy Museum!!
The spy museum was a great experience, my favorite part was the interactive mission that you take part in throughout exploring the museum.
Many of the exhibits did not work. We enjoyed ourselves but at $25 a head. It was still an interesting museum and worth it if it is an interest
A wonderful place to take the family. It has sanitizing stations on all the floors and everyone wears mask. I took my teens and they had a wonderful time doing their mission.
One of the best museums I ever visited. Super interesting and the quality of the presentation is outstanding.
Very cool and immersive experience from beginning to end. The safety protocals are enforced well and are even implemented into the immersion of the experience. Lots of cool information and even cooler interactive exhibits. All in all, a very fun and informative trip, just as a museum should be.
What an amazing place. Get the one year family spy ring membership for a year full of activities. The kids absolutely loved the place, many activities and challenges for all ages. Fun yet very educational knowledge-full activities. Your kids and adults will be challenged. Kids are also looking forward to another trip back.
This was the absolute coolest attraction I did while visiting DC for the first time. So many wonderful artifacts and exhibits to see. You get to have an interactive spy experience. Lots of fun. Great experience!
Very interesting stuff! Lots of interactive activities. Good for kids, though there are a few parts you may want to skip depending on the age of your child
This is a great venue. Many current well documented and presented exhibits. A must see and you will not be disappointed!
They did an amazing job with keeping surfaces clean. They kids enjoyed it and so did we. Most certainly worth it!
Amazing museum. Open during the pandemic.
Waaaaaay more her than I expected. Cool way of presenting it all too. Expect to spend a few hours checking it all out.
2020, FebruaryWe got here via Uber at 3pm. Still paid full price. We got into a 4-minute line to get our admission tickets. Then another line for the elevator. Probably about 15 minutes. While waiting in line, they have instructions on what you can expect. There are several computer stations to test your skills but ALL of them has lines, so we didnt get a chance to use any.The exhibits are amazing, hence the 4 stars. For sure you should visit this place but give yourself at least 4 hours to see all the exhibits and experience the computer interactions. Also, google some coupons.Have a great visit!
Loved the museum had a great time so much to see.... The only part I didnt like was your employee running the first area when you get your card and alias kept calling me mary poppins (multiple times) because I brought an umbrella with me since their was chance of rain, he was also demeaning to the 2 young women in front of us who didnt know where to go because the open doors to the theatre where to their backs. Had a great time but that one employee (9/29/20 just after lunchtime) really is a PR incident waiting to happen
Youll have a good time. Buy your tickets online. The gift shop is the coolest Ive seen in terms of merchandise. Great for someone, who loves mysteries.
Pretty cool place. ALOT of reading, not as many interactive games as I thought. Very good Covid precautions. It was very well curated.
Worth the money if you enjoy spy stuff/movies and history definitely would recommend comfortable walking shoes its alot of information to take in at once. Very educational
I recently had a trip up to Maryland for a wedding and I got the chance to go into DC for a day while I was there. A cousin of mine recommended going to the spy museum so I did and was happy with my decision. This was an epic experience and provides lots of insight and interesting facts and artifacts from various covert operations. The interactive stuff is great for kids and the adults have plenty of interesting reading they can do. Its very cool to me because I walked in not knowing whether it would be an overblown show or have actual historical facts. It really ended up living up to my expectations and if im back in the DC area I may easily choose to go back here again. They have exhibits dating all the way back to Lafayette and ones that cover all the way to the the 2000s. Ie watch out for the gift shop because there is a lot of interesting stuff at a high cost. Although you have to pay to get into the Spy Museum I found out the experience was worth it. Recently the museum was totally revamped and redone which has definitely added the quality of the experience.
A unique perspective into history of the spies. A very interesting way to see how gadgets were used by various countries. This is definitely a very different museum than most and worth visiting.
This place is great. You should take your kids you should take your friends you should take your parents! They do ask that you buy tickets for a certain time slot but take your time while youre there theres a lot to see a lot to read and a lot to do. I highly recommend this place if youre in DC.
Great time loved it. Was very fun and interesting. Alot to look at and read so give yourself some time to go through it. Can take pictures no videos and awesome gift shop after with lots of fun stuff. Must see not for little kids.
This was an amazing experience - ticket was well worth it. The collection was vast and interesting and the interactive nature of the visit made it so much more fun. Will bring my family next time.
Even with covid they were able to make the exhibits fun, interactive and clean! They did a great job. We could have spent all day there! This would be a great destination for older children and above.
The The exhibits are solid 5 star. The kids and atmosphere however are a 3. I went to enjoy this fantastic museum with my uncles, and we had a great time, interactive screens, vast histories about the modern and ancient spies, and great presentation that would fascinate even the youngest teenager. However, as it is a spy museum, it has a large child luster too, which in most cases is great, with its interactive stations keeping them engaged, but there are few of those, and the other kids screaming and yelling made me want to leave this amazing museum after a little while. The staff were great and understanding, and gave us tickets to the next day when there werent several camps dropping kids off, but apparently this is a common occurrence, so watch out. Really wish I could have given this place a 5, because its just really great.
Probably my favorite meseum to date. Great exhibits. Very interesting even to those who arent super in to spies.
Not that thrilling for kids under 6, probably why they are free. The older kids enjoyed the interactive exhibits. As parents we didnt get to read or engage in the exhibits as much as we liked but still fun.
Interactive museum. Very nice and clean. They charged us about $24 per person. Was expecting a little more exiting facts doe and 007 gadgets and or examples.
Very fun and educational for the kids. They loved getting their spy identities and playing along with the mission. The exhibits contain a good mix of videos and reading so the younger kids can remain engaged as well. Even with the covid protocol, pretty much all of the exhibits are open and functional. There is plenty of hand sanitizer available, and they do their best to remind everyone to maintain their social distance. This is a must do for families and individuals alike.
I had so much fun at this place, the history of different spys are super cool, If your in washington DC you should go here
I went to the original spy museum when it 1st opened and I loved it. This was my 1st experience at the new location and they did a wonderful job putting everything together. We took the kids and they were completely into all of the exhibits. I definitely want to go back without the kids maybe really early in the day so that I can read more because kids are not patient enough to let you read all of the displays.
Not absolutely amazing but not bad. Worth the trip.
Its very really good interactive. My fiance and I enjoyed it very much there is the terrorist finding mission
This is an all day event clear your schedule cuz it takes more than 2 hours to get through this entire fun place! Theres so many historical events that you learn about and so much more that you learn about!
It was an amazing experience, if you are ever in DC I would suggest a visit to the spy museum.
It was our first time here. Worth ever penny. Re-entry is permitted if you need to leave; just be sure to get your hand stamped before you exit.Upin arrival you will be assigned your spy identity and it is encoded into the spy card on the lanyard. There are various secret missions to complete plus lots and lots of history on the spy career. Very interesting. My kids aged 10,12 and 15 enjoyed it. The museum was kinda busy but there was so much to do we were kept busy, and could have spent more time here, we were there a few hours.
Well worth a visit. Could spend several hours there.
3 stars...mixed feelings from Grandchildren aged 13-11. One liked it a lot other thought it was boring. Personally I give it 2.5. Not worth the money, just ok. Sorry
Edit: The museum apologized and refunded our money, even though by then we had already changed everything in order to make it to our purchased time. So we visited for free in the end, though at an inconvenient time!------------They never answer their phone or return calls. We prepaid and then had a family emergency. Were now 30 minutes from our reservation and after calling 10 times and leaving three messages all morning, were about to lose our money. This is now how business is done.
Its a good experience you pick up a lot of interesting storys and a lot of history but DONT bring infants in there...
This is a super cool museum, but your experience will depend entirely on the crowd. At the advice of others, we purchased an early morning ticket for a weekday, hoping to avoid the largest crowds.Despite this, when we arrived, our time slot was the same one held by a school group. This would not have been an issue, except that staff allow groups of this size to circumvent the line of individual ticket holders, setting up an unbearable bottleneck at the museum entrance and at the first exhibits. The first interactive module is key, as it provides your “cover” and then you receive your “mission.” A cramped bottleneck of impatient families sets an unpleasant tone for the rest of the exhibits, which will be spent waiting in line to see or interact with the next exhibit.Staff need to revisit their crowd control efforts, or move the interactive exhibits to an app or website that can be accessed on personal devices. This would truly create a 5-star experience, as the museum is really interesting and provides lots of knowledge and entertainment. If you know for certain you won’t encounter a large crowd, I recommend going. Otherwise, I would avoid this museum until they get better at handling crowds.
A lot of fun! Appropriate measures were taken in light of covid in such a way that it felt like the museum was always that way. Displays were well lit and easy to read. Definitely one of my favorites.
Really cool stories and gadgets. Worth the price of admission.
Awesome museum!! Definitely worth the admission price, I learned so much and had a super fun time...really loved it I would definitely recommend!!
Loved this museum and all the interactive features.I wish I had more time to really read all the information and complete my mission. It was a fun experience, however we only lacked time. There were way to many people and the lines for the interactive mission stations were tooo long. The staff were all kind and helpful through all the chaos. This is a great place to check out for any age group! Highly recommend
When the exhibition promises a comprehensive look at ‘50 Years of Bond Villains’ in a real-life spy museum, you know you’re in for a treat. The centerpiece is a replica of the iconic Aston Martin DB5 and, in partnership with EON productions, airships, underground lairs, nuclear weapons and hungry sharks. You can also watch videos of intelligence professionals talking about their own ‘Bond moment’ and the movies’ connection with real world espionage operations. International Spy Museum, 800 F Street, NW, Washington, DC. Open all days, tickets online (spymuseum.org) and at the venue.
So many things to see and do. The interactive stuff was fun but didnt work very efficiently all the time.
My son and his best friend had a wonderful time! Of course this is a museum of spy artifacts and history but this museum is unique in being interactive. We were given our code names and mission and worked on the mission as we traveled through the museum. Lots of adults and couples on dates. Cool museum, fun time!
Loved it so much to read. But if you were alive during the 80s and paying some what attention to the news. You can be like oh snap i remember that!
Not what we expected but learned a lot. Very interactive and cool but didn’t fully understand our mission or what we were to do. Seeing the exhibits and learning the history of espionage was really neat! There are many interactive stations that I believe would have helped us understand our mission but there were lines at most of them so we passed. Probably would be cool but we didn’t want to spend that kind of time there.
We enjoyed the many interactive displays. We were also impressed with the Covid-19 safety measures established by the Museum!
It was okay, but definitely not worth the 25 admission fee
Went June 30, 2020 and would not go back during the current social distancing times. While the Museum content is interesting, they really arent doing a good job with social distancing. Way to many people on the floors and no staff guidance to prevent people getting to close. They should have staff on the floors doing more to control the traffic throughout the exhibits. We didnt feel safe.
Been twice and still havent seen everything. You could easily spend 5 hours here.
