These people are incompetent. They issued timed entry tickets for November 11 and then closed the musuem without notice so many people showed up in pouring rain only to find out they wasted $10 on Metro or $25 on parking for nothing. Since all timed entry tickets were booked online it should have been a simple matter to notify the people but they could not be bothered. No information provided at the door either, just a surly guard shooing people away every so often. STAY AWAY. Ther are many other things to do in this scity and some of them might be well run.

The Smithsonian American Art Museum (commonly known as SAAM, and formerly the National Museum of American Art) is a museum in Washington, D.C., part of the Smithsonian Institution. Together with its branch museum, the Renwick Gallery, SAAM holds one of the worlds largest and most inclusive collections of art, from the colonial period to the present, made in the United States. The museum has more than 7,000 artists represented in the collection. Most exhibitions take place in the museums main building, the old Patent Office Building (shared with the National Portrait Gallery), while craft-focused exhibitions are shown in the Renwick Gallery. The museum provides electronic resources to schools and the public through its national education program. It maintains seven online research databases with more than 500,000 records, including the Inventories of American Painting and Sculpture that document more than 400,000 artworks in public and private collections worldwide. Since 1951, the museum has maintained a traveling exhibition program; as of 2013, more than 2.5 million visitors have seen the exhibitions.

Although I have been to this museum several times, it still remains a top spot in D.C.s downtown district! The recent exhibitions are a must see, with one of them being a portraiture exhibition called The Outwin 2019: American Portraiture Today. This exhibition had really moved me a lot every time I went to see it... If you have time, or just a few hours, go inside and take a look at this exhibition for yourself. But briefly, this is a museum that really shows how art can shape the form of a nation, one portrait (or painting) at a time.

The art museum was pretty awesome. Im not that into art, but there were definitely some pieces in there that really caught my attention and wowed me. There are a few areas that allow you to interact and kind of make your own art, which I thought was cool. Its a large exhibit, so make sure you arrive with plenty of time to be able to see it all!

Beautiful museum. I was specially interested in contemporary art, which you can find more on the third floor. I spent about an hour at the museum before heading to the airport to catch a flight. Its free, close to the Metro station (literally next door), very convenient. Oh, I had to store my luggage myself in a room where people leave their luggage, and didnt get a receipt or anything. That was kind of scary. I took my passport with me just in case, but everything was fine though. Totally recommended.

Several years ago I watched someone walk into one of the galleries, going from painting to painting, snapping a picture of each without ever actually looking at any of them. I realized how lucky I am to be able to come back again and again to enjoy this amazing collection of painting and sculpture. For those not so lucky, volunteers at the information desk are really helpful to visitors with limited time and so many wonderful things to see.

Another free museum to visit in D.C. covered by beautiful art from classic to contemporary. This museum squares around itself so you will eventually end up where you started. An extremely big museum, you will need probably a two days to go through in detail. Hosting a number of paintings and sculptures, is hard to simply make a quick tour here. Note: if you are carrying a backpack you must carry it sideways or else security will ask you to wear it according to their policies. Very neat place with great stuff to see. Highly recommended. Personally for me the museums are a sight to behold no matter what. This museum was no less. I give 4 stars because I have been to MET, MoMA, Guggenheim, and other museums in the NYC, also Smithsonian air and space in DC. the American Art Museum is a younger cousin of the others. I did like some of the sculptures, and the conservation center was quite impressive. The american art also seems like a younger cousin of the European art, there are not many differences, in my humble opinion.it shares the edifice with the Museum of portraits that I did not get a chance to see fully. But I did see a floor dedicated to the portraits of all the U.S. presidents.

My husband and I visited the Smithsonian Art Museum, which if youre an art lover, is of course nothing short of absolutely amazing! There are seemingly endless exhibits, and admission is free! Parking on the other hand is much trickier, and everything but amazing. I 100% recommend pre-paying/reserving a spot in a parking garage (we used Parking Hero, which can be found via Google) that puts you within walking distance of the museums. The garages can be a bit pricey, but with free admission to the museums, and the short walking distance (so no need to spend money or time on a taxi/catching the bus) it is without a single doubt the best way to go, and will make your trip essentially hassel free! There is a cafe inside the museum, Im not sure about their hours or price, but there are plenty of places (again within a short walking distance) to grab a bite to eat. It was such a wonderful way to spend the day; Whether its a date, get together with friends, or outting with the family, its a fantastic way to spend the day

The National Portrait gallery was one of the Smithsonian Museums I had not visited till today.Portraits aside there is an amazing collection of WPA artists work as well as early American Masters. I saw for my first time new epic Church and Bierstadt landscapes on grand scales. I was most moved however by Hoppers 1933 Ryders House which feels effortlessly painted with equal attention given to the landscape and the simple but elegant architecture. The richest area of tones is reserved for the gentle hills in the left distance. Oh to paint so gently and with so much simple beauty that reflects the challenges of an era so well.

For those with children, you can give your children a brief history breakdown so they can better understand the significance of what they see in the museum. Another great idea for children is a scavenger hunt that is outlined on a treasure map of the museum. The clues can be found in an art piece (for younger kids), or in a description (for older kids, this encouraging them to read )
