This museum is huge! It was a lot of walking but so many beautiful paintings from different eras. Going here was such a wonderful birthday present. I would love to go back since certain exhibits were closed off. So I hope once things get better I can return and see everything. The gift shop was very nice also. All of the workers seem so helpful.
This is my favorite Smithsonian museum. The National Gallery of Art is one of the largest art museums in the world. Best thing about it is that its free. You can come as much as you want and not have to pay up each time.In addition to the outstanding permanent exhibitions, there are wonderful rotating exhibits. What a wonderful, wonderful place to spend a few hours. Especially if the outside world is hectic. All the more reason to come in here.
COVID protections felt adequate, I really appreciate the effort in order to open. Right now, it is just one floor and the Degas at the Opera. So glad I was able to be return to this wonderful institution.
Excellent place.. beautiful.. interesting place.. I will back .. thank you for your hospitality

It has so many great exhibits and is presented in such a great manner. Despite the numbering and guiding maps as well the helpful employees, it is very east to get lost in the plethora of paintings. You can also frame the art as I found great angles to photograph the presentation itself. It’s good to have a plan if you want to cover a certain range of exhibits as the museum is quite large. The guides are very insightful and knowledgeable and were able to guide me to exhibits based on my likes and intrigues. They do have a good collection of Van Gogh as well as a piece from Leonardo Da Vinci. There is an extension of this museum, which is a definite yes yes as it holds all the portraits of US presidents as well another set of impressive art and sculptures. There are a number of cafes within the establishment for a welcome break.
I am so happy the NGA is open again. My husband and I decided to spend our Saturday date walking over to the museum and taking in an exhibit or two. We reserved tickets online a couple of weeks in advance (they get released at 10 am on Mondays for the /following/ week). We arrived at 11:30 and decided to have lunch first (it took us 1.5 hours to walk there so we needed rest and fuel) and browse the museum store which has a lot of cute knick knacks and interesting books. We then walked through the furniture exhibit (it’s okay, not really for us), took a quick look at the impressionist still lifes (cute puppies, fruit and oysters), and spent the rest of the time (about an hour) in the True to Nature exhibit. This is a very nice collection of ‘amateur’ paintings of a variety of natural features in the Italian and French countryside. We would have liked to see the Degas exhibit but decided to save it for next time as our legs were quite tired. All of the staff were super friendly and I personally LOVED how few people were there. To be honest, I hope they stick with ticketed/limited entry into the future because it greatly increases the quality of the experience. Highly recommended way to get out of the house! I feel like I just spent an hour in the Mediterranean
Open during COVID with reserved tickets and lower capacity which has been nice because it is not as crowded.
Great place to view some wonderful art. Large variety. Extensive pieces including era. Easy to navigate and its free. Well maintained and kept.
COVID protections felt adequate, I really appreciate the effort in order to open. Right now, it is just one floor and the Degas at the Opera. So glad I was able to be return to this wonderful institution.
Very nice.. there are some unique pieces, it was very interesting. These are two of my favorites..
Such an amazing, eye-opening place to visit. I highly recommend visiting. The place is clean, the staff is attentive & very pleasant. The presentation is thoroughly thought out & modern. Plan on spending a couple of hours here.
It was a good place to view art and learn about it. I would like for tour guides to not freak out so much for people getting close to exhibits. Kids dont know rules the same way adults do, at least most adults. But other than that the guide was great at asking questions and getting 1st graders involved. Thank you.
Magnificent architecture is a perfect backdrop to the large collection of world-famous works of art. Make sure to visit both buildings and the sculpture garden. The bottom floor has places to eat and a couple of well-stocked shops with reasonably priced art-related items.
The National Gallery of Art is a must-see in DC. Contains pieces of fine art, contemporary art, and their sculpture garden. Admission is free. The West Building contains fine art, featuring sculptures and paintings from the Renaissance to the 1800s from European and American artists. The contemporary art in the East Building is very diverse and unique in form. If you have time, take at least one Guided Tour. They only take about 50-60 minutes, but youre informed on the historical context and the symbolism of the pieces. The famous sculpture featured in the film, Glory, is in the fine art side. The museum is well-maintained with their employees and security. The food in their Cascade Cafe has a variety of options.
The employee Jillian who is making timed passes appointments is super nice. She has excellent customer service. She made the process easy and uncomplicated. Thank you!!
Covid review: got free entry tickets. Entered at the scheduled time. Limited exhibits but for the ones open, it was good! The security guards were limiting numbers of people in the galleries. Highly recommend! Bathrooms clean.
Must see! Favorite! It was a gorgeous day! Walked through the garden to see the unique sculptures throughout the nicely landscaped garden. Also walked around the huge fountain that attracted many to sit around it. In the winter they freeze it over for ice skating! We stopped for lunch at the cafe on the premises. The chicken salad on croissant was delicious! Highly recommend!
The most amazing thing to me about old paintings is how well they have been preserved for mankind to enjoy.
Upon arrival to this free Smithsonian museum I went to the front desk. The volunteer there gave me a map and circled the things he thought Id have interest in. It would take a very long time to see it all! There was way more art than I was expecting. But to see original works by such famous artists was absolutely a one of a kind experience. No food or drinks permitted inside, so drink up before you go in. They do have a beautiful restaurant inside.
If you have not been here, go! On par with museums in London and Paris. They also have amazing rotating exhibits. The Japanese animal exhibit was my favorite.
Loved the museum guided tours. They were for free and the lecturer interacted with the audience a lot. Learned a lot. Feel lucky I experienced before Covid-19. Miss the city.

The east building is the newest building, its one of only 2 in the world built this way.

For people who love museums and art! There are combinations of paintings and sculptures from different centuries.
The National Gallery of Art is an amazing collection of art. The layout is such that you can find what you want to see, while also wander and see new things. There are two buildings, one with modern art and one with more traditional art. You can go between the two via a beautiful underground hallway. I think you could spend days in this museum. Luckily, like all Smithsonian museums, its free... so you can come and go. We are lucky to have the Smithsonian museums. Highly recommend a stop at the National Gallery if you are in DC. Amazing place and a huge selection of great art and history.
The National Gallery of Art, and its attached Sculpture Garden, is a national art museum in Washington, D.C., located on the National Mall, between 3rd and 9th Streets, at Constitution Avenue NW. Open to the public and free of charge, the museum was privately established in 1937 for the American people by a joint resolution of the United States Congress. Andrew W. Mellon donated a substantial art collection and funds for construction. The core collection includes major works of art donated by Paul Mellon, Ailsa Mellon Bruce, Lessing J. Rosenwald, Samuel Henry Kress, Rush Harrison Kress, Peter Arrell Browne Widener, Joseph E. Widener, and Chester Dale. The Gallerys collection of paintings, drawings, prints, photographs, sculpture, medals, and decorative arts traces the development of Western Art from the Middle Ages to the present, including the only painting by Leonardo da Vinci in the Americas and the largest mobile created by Alexander Calder. The Gallerys campus includes the original neoclassical West Building designed by John Russell Pope, which is linked underground to the modern East Building, designed by I. M. Pei, and the 6.1-acre (25,000 m2) Sculpture Garden. The Gallery often presents temporary special exhibitions spanning the world and the history of art. It is one of the largest museums in North America. For the breadth, scope, and magnitude of its collections, the National Gallery is widely considered to be one of the greatest museums in the United States of America, often ranking alongside the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Museum of Modern Art in New York City, the Art Institute of Chicago in Chicago, Illinois, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston in Boston, Massachusetts. Of the top three art museums in the United States by annual visitors, it is the only one that has no admission fee. It ranks 2nd in American museums behind the Met for number of annual visitors and 10th in the world.
As others before have stated; one of the best museums in the world. I prefer to go during the week to cut down on the number of people; but certainly worth taking the time out of your day to spend several hours.
Awe inspiring! Went at peak time and it was still pleasant and not crowded at all. Works are arranged by century, no picture can do justice to the wonderful colors and lines. Went in more to cool down and liked it more than air and space.
Most wings now open, wonderful Baroque, Impressionism,etc.. American, British, Dutch, Continental... Rodins The Thinker -Le Penseur
An art lover could spend a whole week in here. A non-art lover could spend about a day here too. It is that great and interesting for all. LOVE IT!
Love of my favorite places in DC. Feels like my own private gallery.
One day is not enough to do the full round of visit to the gallery. Marvelous collection of arts and sculptures. Finding parking space is difficult near to the gallery. Be prepared to spend one day in the gallery. It gives nice experience. Enjoyed it. Bit crowded during weekends and holidays. Plan to go during weekdays.
One of my favorite places in DC
Always a pleasure coming here to visit old friends and see the new acquisitions. A very friendly and forgiving atmosphere for a national museum. Enjoyed chatting with the docents.
National Gallery was a great experience. It had a lot of great paintings & art that I really liked. Gift shop was great aa well, got some edicational puzzles for my nieces & nephews. Enjoyed my visit to the gallery. Keep doing a great job for people to enjoy
This museum is very awe inspiring, especially the sculptures from the traditional wing.

I went there for a school project with some friends absolutely loved the experience we went in for one subject but stay to view all the other exhibits it had to offer. I have no qualms about coming back just on my free time for more masterpieces to enjoy and soak up the scenery.
It was so clean and so quiet in there. It really gave me time to enjoy each and every peace of art.
What a tremendous place to visit if you enjoy seeing amazing paintings and sculptures. I had a fantastic time going Room to Room viewing the various paintings and sculptures. I only wish I had allowed for more time.
Had a great time seeing everything! Some very interesting and beautiful art to see! Make sure u pack a lunch, food is expensive everywhere there! And they have skooters u can rent. I would, very hard on your feet seeing all these museums! We visited like 5 museums in that one day and walked over nine miles that day. And there is so much more to see and more museums to visit. Next time Im also gonna stay overnight. To much to see in one day!
Lots of great paintings and artwork you can only find at this place. If you love art, youre gonna love this place. But one thing to remember, if you want to enjoy this place the most, you should consider at least two days for visiting this place unless you only want to walk quickly through the paintings and pay not too much attention to the nuances and the great details hidden in these beautiful masterpieces. By the way, I recommend putting your headphones on and listen to a great classical music collection (e.g. Bach, Mozart, etc.) while visiting here. I did that and it was fantastic.
Awe inspiring collection of art. We didnt get a chance to discover the whole museum, as you could get caught up admiring a painting here, or historical furniture piece there. This is a place to visit on a regular basis, to take in all that it offers, but even seeing it once will leave you with new appreciation for humanitys past. I understand that the displays do change every so often which is another reason to come back. Free admission for a walk through history.
Wonderful museum, gorgeous inside !
We stopped here on a whim after one of the Smithsonian museums. We only made it through one wing but the art was staggering. The children with us ranged from 12 to 8 years of age and even they were engaged. They have something for everyone.
Mind-blowing. The spot is enormous and one could spend numerous hours there. Any celebrated craftsman you can consider will have works shown here. My most loved are the Renaissance works of art. There was an extraordinary room devoted to crafted by a Venice ace painter named Tintoretto who is my new top pick. Unimaginable ability, astounding subtleties, and decisions of shading. Section to this historical center is FREE
There is so much to see inside the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, which in my opinion, rivals what I’ve seen in the Louvre Museum in France. I am an art lover, so I do not mind spending hours admiring impressionists and their use of color and light and gazing at the great pieces of art.The museum is huge with collections of European and American arts. And because there is no entrance fee, you don’t feel compelled to see it all at once. Come back as often as you want. One more thing, once you enter the building, get a map before you wander around. You don’t want to miss something you’re dying to see.The photos you see below are just few of the hundreds of exhibits on display. Some galleries didn’t allow photography inside, so my shots were limited. Enjoy.
Just amazing this is a wonderful place to go with your family highly recommend you go. Art is a cool this to look at. Go there and have a look.
The Degas at the opera was very nice. It was the only part of the gallery open.
Undoubtedly a gorgeous classical building, unique and first rate collection and relax well spaced lay out of exhibits with a grand air of intimacy in each room despite the colossus collection they house in every level.Simply worth travelling to Washington DC just to visit this magnificent jewel worthy of praise and admiration.Allow at least 3 to 4 hours just to see highlights as it is an unending rollercoaster of masterpieces of so many diferent periods.
Timed pass, weekday morning. Degas without crowds. Great outing for those who can.
Love the West Building of the National Gallery of Art. Maybe its my love of history but I enjoy, and even find it relaxing, wandering the hallways and rooms absorbing all the beauty and history passed down to us from the cultures and civilizations and artists of the past. Staff is friendly, rarely crowded, but get a map. The West Building is HUGE and maze like. Of course restrooms and food is available on site. Some exhibits may require tickets.
Beautiful permanent and rotating collections on the classic (west) and modern (east) building. Something for everyone! Good gift shops and café too, plan on a few hours if you can.
This place needs a lot more time than the 1 hour that I got. There are some beautiful pieces and some I was just so amazed by. Theres even a couple of famous pieces laid about.
Nice mix of painting and sculptures. I wish it flowed better. Easy to get lost in places. The guards were very helpful and some were down right funny. Made my day.
The National Gallery of Art in Washington DC has an amazing collection of European and American art in two buildings . Entry is free which as it is part of the Smithsonian Institution. It is definitely worth a visit to enjoy the remarkable works that are there.
A nice variety of art. From a photography standpoint the rooms are minimal white rooms which is perfect. You can take pictures from a lot of different angles. Also Im not an art critic but the art is more on the classical side.
The art pieces were amazing as well as the statues. Only it was kind of confusing to find certain famous artist art pieces
An amazing collection of some of the worlds finest art, set in a structure worthy of their display. A few hours is enough to spend walking through the gallery. Be sure not to miss the sculptures near the east end of the main building. They are mesmerizing.
Such a wonderful pleasure to visit the Gallery again. Warm welcome from the staff.
Absolutely gorgeous... Worth the drive..
This is an amazing place. Whatever variety of art catches your fancy; you can find the best of it here. This is a big place so youll need at least a day to work your way through it and appreciate it all.
We loved touring the gallery. There are so many beautiful works there. We didnt get to see nearly as much as we wanted, cant wait to go back!
This art gallery is absolutely incredible and free! It has a great array of art and sculptures. Even work from Picasso. The museum is open and huge with a lot of natural lighting. There is a terrace with great views of DC and sculptures. They have an underground walkway that goes between the east and west ends of the building with gift shops and a full cafeteria. One of the coolest things about this underground tunnel is the waterfall that comes down and crashes into a glass wall.
I was so excited when I saw my favourite impressionists paintings in the gallery. They have a huge volume for various artists. The structure is somewhat easy to manage and its easy to navigate room to room with well categorized themed paintings. You could maybe miss a small room or two. The open statue restoration is an awesome feature to allow people to see. The building is also beautiful.
It’s nice for outside day to visit museum, creative art work, hopefully the cafeteria will open soon.
This place has something for everyone. I am not much of an art person, but i spent over 3 hrs in the museum looking at the brilliant sculptures and impressionist art. Loved it.
My youngest daughter (21) and I went in March for her Spring Break (college). She wanted to see the National Gallery of Art because she’s more into it than I am. But I’ll admit I really enjoyed the gallery. The paintings were breathtaking and I felt like I was Ferris Bueller on his day off! I seriously enjoyed all the aspects of this place. I loved the spiritual peace I felt being in there looking at the different pieces and paintings. We Han a beautiful mid-morning, waltzing around the gallery
Great museum with some of must see paintings and sculptures. Definitely worth a visit.
Glad that it’s partly open, but to be “safe,” the museum closed off the second floor, forcing more people to congregate in fewer areas. Seems like a pointless, self-defeating policy. Some first level rooms were unusually packed.
This was the first time I take my 7 year old (we usually just go to the natural history museum). I was surprised with how much he enjoyed it! The temporary exhibition on Japanese arts was kids friendly and he enjoyed the audio self-guided tour.I’m going to be better at exposing my kids to museums outside the natural history as they often surprise us with new and/or emerging interests.
Absolutely enjoyed looking at the gallery. There were amazing paintings, sculptures, and furniture. You have to see the gallery in person because some of the paintings are gigantic.
Loved it! The upstairs portion isnt open right now, so we will definitely be back, to see it.
Beautiful place great artwork definitely a lot to see here if you’re into art and history
Always a delight to visit, the National Gallery of Art is a school of learning for my four and a half year old charge. We were there for three and a half hours. The Shipwreck continues to be his favorite painting.
It was awesome! Me and the wife loved this place. Its FREE. How Awesome is that?! Soo many rare once in a lifetime paintings/sculptures/artifacts were there. They dated past 1100s and were in awesome condition. Well preserved.
As an avid art fan, this place went beyond all expectations, it was wonderfully engaging and beautiful. Sculpture, stained glass, paintings; all presented in such beautiful surroundings. I felt so peaceful there, cant wait to go back!
Fantastic collection, free entrance. One of the best things about living in DC.
An absolute gem! Just big enough to not overwhelm, and a great architectural layout. A perfect mix of all mediums and epochs. The cafe food was excellent, too. Sculpture garden is a nice getaway with a beautiful restaurant, too.
Pretty cool museum. Nice exhibits. We enjoyed it.
Amazing museum with a wide variety of both modern and older art. There are a lot of levels but the staff and maps are super helpful to find your way. The security guards are pretty serious so make sure your backpack is not on your back, and that you don’t have water bottles out. Would definitely recommend as a free stop during a trip to D.C.
They had a beautiful building with breathtaking works. There was plenty of areas to stop and sit and large open lobbies to relax before looking for more artwork.
The Garden Cafe has nice cream brûlée’s, nice atmosphere, staffs are friendly but took a while to bring my chèque.
I love this!! Free admission! So much to see! I posted some pictures!! But there’s so much more! A must see! So beautiful!!
A wonderful place for art lovers and artist alike to see arts and culture embodied in a masterpiece created by known artist dating back centuries ago.
The National Gallery of Art is always worth a visit even if there is not a special exhibit. In years past Ive seen Rothko, Calder, and Singer-Sargent. The regular exhibits are otherwise spectacular and they have art for every taste. This gallery is also free so even better. Make sure you budget a couple of hours if there is a special exhibit. Theyre are guards who will look in your bags so be prepared for this as well. Easy to get to if you take the Metro to the Smithsonian stop. A must go for at lovers if you are in Washington, DC.
First of all it is an amazing place to see that much of artistic works all at the same time. I am not sure about it, but you can roughly split the museum into three sections: sculptures in the first floor, furniture which is not too big again in the first floor, and paintings in the second floor. The most attracting section for me was paintings. There were large varaiety of paintings from pencil drawings to different techniques. From the size point of view, there were very large paintings that you really feel tiny when you stand in front of them. To the best of my knowledge, most famous paintings in this section are one from Leonardo da Vinci and one self portrait from Vincent van Gogh. In addition there are some paintings and sculptures related to Michelangelo. Except for some of them, all of the paintings and sculptures are in the exposure of the visitors and you can watch them very closely, and it is the amazing point about this museum. If you are a very interested museum person, devoted one or two complete days to visit it properly. If you just wanted to have a quick look on it, half a day or 3 to 4 hours will be enough. I spent around 6 hours there and I still want to return and visit it in two or maybe three days.
Verrocchio Exhibit was amazing. You see why he was a master sculptor and his technique copied by others. We are so fortunate that museums in DC are free.
Very nice museum with very artsy installations. This is a great place for taking pictures. Went here for a project for one of my courses because it was required. This is a great place to visit because it the variety of work!
Amazing exhibit on Tintoretto! Dont miss this! The first time many of his paintings have been grouped together for centuries. The scake, colors, drama, and tales are breathtaking Docent talk+walk is exceptional. I wish theyd stay open late on a Friday night for music+wine to match the theme. Maybe for members. A highlight of any trip to WDC!
Loved the Seurat and Cezanne pieces in particular.
Lots of beautiful paintings, statues, and sculptures! This is a quieter museum with less people. The fountain in the middle with the large dome ceiling above is a sight to see!
This place is amazing to say the least. There may have been tears involved. To see such pieces of classic art had me speechless.
I took a field trip to the National Gallery of Art with my first graders. We stayed in the East wing. It was a wonderful experience or both the children and me. We had wonderful docents who gave us a great tour of the gallery. We participated in some Hands-On experiences. We have lots of Rich discussions. The museum is large enough to view without being crowded on top of other people. It is one of my favorite places to go in Washington.
