October 2020: the grounds are open dawn-dusk. Free admission. Plan on 1 hour. The visitor center building is only open Saturday & Sunday 10-3. There is also no fee. Looks pretty small with space exhibits. The grounds have 3 walking trails: There is a 1/4 mile level and paved loop with interpretive signs where the structures were. There are no remaining or rebuilt structures. There is a section of the original Oregon Trail you can walk (500 feet). The third trail leads UP to a pillar memorial to the Whitmans. This trail leads back down to a cemetery with no headstones of folks who died on the Oregon Trail & buried in a mass grave/ plot here and adjoining is the grave of the Whitmans & their adopted kids. Total for this loop which includes a moderate ascent is about 1/4 mile.
Such a peaceful place! Nice lake and plenty of area to walk. The monument at the top of the hill is perfect for watching sunsets. One of my favorite all-time places in the area.
I was a nice slice of preserved history; you can even walk a piece of the oregon trail. It was a peaceful place to have a picnic lunch and get a little walking in before heading back out on the road. The rangers are super helpful and are ready to answer any questions they can!
It was definitely worth a stop. The rangers were helpful and the film was great. We all learned a lot!
Interesting location and history. It is a small Historical Park with a small visitor center. The movie is great and the hands on exhibit in the main lobby is cool. A path takes you to the location of where the buildings of the mission were located and up to the monument and mass grave. A restored section of the Oregon Trail runs the length of the park
If you are interested in U.S. history, this site is worth a visit. One of the more tragic events of the westward movement occurred at this location. It was tragic not just for the Whitmans and other settlers at the mission, but for the Cayuse people. After the measles epidemic and the massacre, their culture was forever changed.
This is our 5th summer traveling around the country with our 6 kids and we completed our last continental state here at this national park!! It was a beautiful site! What made this experience exceptional was Park Ranger Jessica she went above and beyond for us. I had called early in the day because we werent going to make it in time for a stamp for our passport book. Not only did she stamp a paper and leave it in the pamphlet box for us but she was also still there when we arrived!! Jessica and her supervisor let us make a late purchase at the visitors center and they were both hands down the most friendly rangers we have encountered in our numerous stops to national parks. Whitman Mission Congrats you have a two great employees!!
Love the history. & the park is well kept.
Nice grounds, friendly staff. Well kept.
Always a nice quiet morning walk, with a beautiful view from the top of the hill.
Nice place for a short hike.
Great spot to learn some important local and national history. The park service has done a good job getting the site accurate to better help understand the mission, its purpose, and eventual outcome. Definitely a sad story about some of the struggles and challenges of multiple groups of humanity.
Authentic Oregon trail wagon; native plant revegetation efforts are impressive. Too bad it was closed.
Great lil stop for history.
Before you go read your history because they have twisted the facts to suit an agenda. Suggested read first hand account of Cathrine Sager. Nice visitor center. Movie was inaccurate historically. The staff was nice but didnt know the true history either. The musem has artifacts from the era and site but very limited.
This is run by the national park service and as always the rangers are extremely helpful. Try and spend 20 mins to watch the documentary about the History of the mission at the visitor center. The actual memorial is on the top of hill which is 5 min walk. On a clear day it offers great views of the valley and the blue mountains
Great place for family pictures. Beautiful grounds.
A bit of Northwest history free and informative.
I wish they would have had their speakers working to tell more about the history
My Cross country team comes here at least once a week to do hill training since Witmans hill is great for sprinting intervals. The staff there never complain about our presence there and even make sure we are safe and sound. They also have a nice indoor cultural display of the history belonging to the monument. Its a nice place to spend an afternoon with family and friends, specially if you want to see a nice sunset.
Walk on the Oregon Trail. The area is beautiful, well kept and a safe place to hike and learn
Whitman Mission is worth a visit. Small, but informative visitor center attempts to explain and reconcile events that led to the so-called Whitman Massacre. Helpful park staff. Plan a 1 to 2 hr visit, if you intend to watch the 22-minute video, tour the visitor center, and walk the nearby nature paths. On- site picnic area a good option for lunch.
Wonderfully beautiful historical place
Important piece of Washington history with regards to white settlements and their involvement in first settlers lives. Pics are from 2003
Nice walking trail in a historical area.
A great site to see a piece of NW history. Great start, maybe a suboptimal ending.
Great history lesson
Wagon train history
Enjoyed our visit and the security guard was so helpful! Cant help but feel a little melancholy ad you walk through the mission suite.
Beautiful scenery relaxed environment and historical landmarks, recommend to anyone !
Nice place to go for a walk.
Very interesting, the rangers were very knowledgeable. I learned so much about this part of Washington
Nice historic place.
Free National Park featuring walking trails, birds watching, scheduled activities.Make sure not to miss the Junior Ranger program & if you can go in the spring, youll see lots of baby birds on the pond. The inside museum area is small, but informative and well staffed.
This was a very interesting park with lots of historical information. I enjoyed the trails and museum. The film was ok. If you have time its worth stopping in for!
Great place to bring your cat, pet your cat, play with your cat. If your into cats play this place is for you
Great piece of Oregon Trail history to ponder and reflect upon. Check out The Stout-hearted Seven, (story of The Sager Family) a must read for OT enthusiasts. Humbling historic treasure. Worth the visit.
Cant beat the sunsets here for anything
Once us not enough. Go during the different seasons. The turtles are fun to watch from the bank of the pond
I visit this place every time I come to Walla Walla. Its both a quiet peaceful stroll and a solemn marker for a terrible tragedy. Read the placards as you move from spot to spot to unveil a glimpse at the brief but sad story. Youll be surprised at how small the footprints of the buildings are, most of which you can still see. Walk up to the Knoll (Youll spot the obelisk) for a great view. If you follow the trail down from the obelisk youll pass into a grove of very old poplar trees where the original cemetery is situated. Its a very tranquil spot. There is also a museum with interesting artifacts and regularly scheduled educational movies. Ive always found the trail to be more interesting, though. Its all free. Just check the hours before you come.
Cool place for history
Fun place or learn the history of the area in around 30 mins. More if you watch their videos
Great part of (tragic) history and balanced views of both sides. Pretty grounds and good visitor center. Very knowledgeable staff and more than happy to share information. Could benefit from having fabricated structures to represent the mission and other buildings of the period. All they have are grass identifiers that you can stand in and use your imagination. But it is pretty and convenient.
As many of Americas National Historic Sites are, Whitman Mission is a fantastic pairing of natural beauty and American history.
Very interesting history. Everyone should see this place. A reminder of our American story.
Great place to explore the history of the area. Beautiful views.
Maybe when i turn 18 i am going to live there in whitman mission.
Come and learn the story and the history. Well worth the time. Carry the lessons in your life .
Thoughtful step back in time & history with my son & granddaughter as we stepped into the past.
A beautiful area where we can see our land!
Lots of important history! Well done.
Very interesting historical site. Well maintained and a really great staff.
Always a great place to go to catch a sunset or sunrise. A little bit of a hike up but worth the view. Free.
Very interesting. Dont skip the film.
We always visit when in town. Nice hill to hike and beautiful views.
Nice place
Its a great place to walk and enjoy some local history.
Really nice place. Great for a family day.
Great place for a hike with friends and family and clean environment.
Very neat to see all the history!
Very informative & knowledgeable staff. Interesting history.
The massacre at the Whitman mission. At times history is tragic, but this museum is great. Set on the very grounds where the mission stood all those years ago. Also the destination of the orphaned Sager family after suffering the heartbreak along the Oregon Trail. Great experience for those into Pacific Northwest history.
Peaceful landscape with a great view. Bring a hat for shade in the summer. Helpful Park Service staff. Free to visit!
Fun for the family. Be sure to have the kids pick up the junior ranger activity book. Not too much walking so the little ones can do it too.
Loved seeing the kids so interested in learning the history of this place and the people who lived and travelled through here! Thank you for a wonderful time for all these excited 4th graders!!
The area is active with residual Energy. I can feel it as I approach it and while im floating around the Historical Site. Very Family safe easy distinguished marked paved paths. Clear view for a SunSet.
I was totally surprised at how well this monument museum displays their exhibits. The village was like stepping back in time. The museum was so good we purchased a family membership.
Beautiful place with very sad history. You should check it out
Love the history and how there was no blaming one side or the other. Very good job of showing each sides view.
Nice place to go to see what the mission look like and hear the history. There are no actual buildings to look at
Very good pioneer settlers history
Fun place to visit for history info and a walk.
The staff running tge place are extremely friendly. We went as a school field trip and had a wonderful time. The info given was breif but nice. The grounds there are beautifully kept and lovely to behold.
Thoroughly enjoy visiting this place. Very knowledgeable and friendly staff & park rangers. Lots of historic exploration outside and inside the visitor center.
Very nice...exceptionally clean
Very powerful reading about the events that happened less 2 life times ago, the struggles and dangerous that the Whitman missionaries and settlers came up against including essentially knowing that you are an invading and unwanted by the natives. Words that spring to mind are strange, eeire, gratitude to not be living in those circumstances and happy that College Place is actually quite a mundane place to be and not likely to find my hair lying on the ground one day.
Definitely worth a visit. See the video in the visitors center before you go out to wander the grounds.
Historic spot with trails to explore.
Lame Political correctness has tainted the perspective of the people and media transferring the history to folks going through now. Worth visiting and reading about it. Dont watch the movie though. Whitmans not presented in any kind of positive light. I was wondering why the even kept the mission afterward.
Lots of outdoor walking. Small but nicely put together exhibit inside. Movie about the time period was nicely balanced and showed both indigenous and settler points of view.
Really interesting to see history up close. No original buildings left, but foundations layed out with plaques detailing what was there. Museum/Gift shop, with friendly helpful rangers. Self guided tour through site.
We didnt realize we lived so close to the park and our kids really liked walking on the trails and learning about the mission.
We should all remember the Whitmans, their mission, their sacrifice, and what the consequences were for the first peoples. This is a beautiful location and a complex story.
Cool placer if You like history however you have to walk approx a mile
Peaceful and gorgeous place.
Awe-inspiring!
Beautiful, scenic, and tragic. A great historical stop. Also check out the Frenchtown site and the Fort Walla Walla museum. We thought the educational video was kind of over-the-top and kitschy so it was quite fun to watch.
Learning new things at this museum
