Love that you can either visit the ocean or the forest! Not many natural areas offer both. There are parking fees, but supporting this amazing park is money well spent and keeps the amenities from becoming crowded. The beach-side is on the Chesapeake Bay, and has wide, clean sand expanses. With fewer people than other beaches, its a pleasure to walk the drift line or set up a spot to watch the wildlife. The forest side has miles of trails interspersed with wooden walkways and overlooks. They wind through bogs where cypress knees and Spanish Moss are everywhere. There are historic sites like the Indian Grave and longhouse, as well as information signs for the flora and fauna. In late summer there are areas with wild blueberries, and fall is a mushroom extravaganza! Pets are allowed on leash, and this is one of my dogs favorite adventures! Although trails are marked, it is worthwhile to pick up a trail map at the Visitors Center. Helps keep track of paths you take!

I love running the trails in First Landing. Im not a Virginia resident and the $7 day pass for a vehicle is a bit steep, so I usually park outside the gate on 64th Street on the east end or over by Cape Story Park off Shore Drive on the west end. Then I just jump on Cape Henry trail and head into the park. There are a few maps that rate the trails, but other than distance theres not much difference in difficulty (at most theyre gently rolling). The trails along the Broad Bay side are great. Cape Henry trail would be great on a gravel bike, but since I only run here, I try and branch off as quickly as I can to the side trails. Lots of combinations to get the distance you want.

Such a beautiful state park. Located on the Chesapeake Bay with great trails for walking and biking. For the most part, camp sites are spacious and fairly private. The camp store is one of the best Ive seen. Only complaint, it was cold when we visited so we spent $18 on firewood since we couldnt bring our own. What we bought was not cured and did little to create a nice cozy fire! Otherwise, all wonderful. We will return.

A popular state park near Cape Henry, First Landing is most popular with beach goers who use the car park to head to the beach on the border of the confluence of Chesapeake and Atlantic Ocean. Across the highway are walking and biking trails which seemed to have a decent amount of traffic. Many plants are at their northernmost range at First Landing, which is really neat to see if you are from the north and don’t wish to travel much more south to see them, such as Spanish moss. The trail near the lake is especially neat, but they’re all very nice and well-maintained; there is a $7 charge for vehicular entry. Worth a visit if you’re a nature buff or simply looking to get some exercise or visit a beach. Cheers.

Best vacation spot for the whole family! Our family loves First Landing because there is so much to do. Everyone can find something that pleases them, whether its walking on the beach, paddleboarding, hiking/biking the trails or spending the day at the ocean front. Sunsets and crabbing at night are a must!

We camped here and it was wonderful. I rarely give 5 stars to anything unless it is truly a unique place that is worth the travel. All the camp sites are magical. We drive almost 400 miles to camp here in our pop up camper and we were so pleased. The facilities are great, the beach is wonderful and the campground is close to everything fun to do in Virginia Beach. The hiking and biking is so fun at this place and the gift shop is great.

We love camping here. Have been going each summer for over 10 years. It’s gotten progressively busier, to the point it’s hard to even get a reservation. While I love it, the onslaught of folks camping means that not everyone respects the park. Litter at camp sites, on the beach and on the trails is increasingly common. People bag their dog poop and then leave it on the trail. Throwing trash in the wooded areas of camps. It’s unfortunate.

Visited here with my husband, sister and her two small children. We had a wonderful time! The beach was not overly crowded, it was clean and the water was very calm. Perfect for swimming, especially with two kids. The bathrooms were very clean, and the general store had lots of options. All of the staff was nice and all indoor facilities required masks. We had a great experience and can’t wait to come back and camp and hit some of the trails.

My mom and I loved this park. We came here to do some of the trails and our expectations were satisfied. We hiked the Bald Cypress Trail. The views of the swamps were really cool. Also, the trail itself was extremely well maintained. I’d say this was a pretty easy hike, too, so most people can do this one. I’m glad I got to do this hike, but there are so many other things I wanted to do in the park. I can get to those the next time I’m in the area, though! In any event, if you’re looking for a park with good hikes and beaches, check this one out!

We went to the 64th street hiking area and used a stroller for our walk for our daughter. Please, dont do this!! The trail is too bumpy for a stroller. Also, we used the port o pottie... it was a horrible experience. It was like it hadnt been cleaned in weeks! The overall area for hiking etc was pretty nice, spacious. However, it cost $7 just to park and go walking for a bit. This was too much for our 1hr visit!!!

If camping, bugs, lots. Some sites are elevated on old dunes but others squat low near water. Avoid those. Some tent sites are small, sad, and exposed. Avoid those too. Road noise can be an issue if too close to US 60, but if you tuck yourself in its surprisingly quiet. Yurts look awesome. Beach at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay is great for families with young kids not ready for bigger waves. Dunes between campground and beach are beautiful. Cape Henry Trail was a fun family bike ride. Access points to the Atlantic Ocean in VA Beach are an easy drive. Not by any means a remote wilderness but if you want to have a family beach trip without the high rises and/or on a budget this is a solid option.

The park is large with lots of trails, but largely unaccessible by foot. You’d need to be a runner or on bike. Trails more feasible.

The park is beautiful with marsh lands and long trails (easy to moderate).Trail map provided in the entrance is quite confusing and you will end up asking others how to reach the trails, unless you get the parking lot near the park office. 10$ being collected as parking fee isnt justified when we cant even get a good map and there is no consideration for residents or off season.i would rather go to near by park like Dismal swamp state park which is free and have more to see.

Absolutely stunning park! Both the hiking trails and beach side are gorgeous natural areas. I found the beach to be very clean and not super crowded. Tons of beautiful seabirds including droves of pelicans. One might be lucky enough to find good shells or sea stones. The trails were immaculate and it seems most folks respect nature here. They are a mix of Boardwalk and dirt paths. So many different types of trees and even some Spanish moss! Beautiful and each site has different characteristics. Our first sight was nestled in among lower foliage, sand dunes, and a thick sand site which provided nice seclusion from neighboring sites. Second site was under high foliage with tree branch growing outward in all directions. This created a great canopy for over our RV. The children around us loved climbing and playing in the trees. Both sites had quick walking access to the beach. Beach was nice and the little sand crabs were entertaining for our kids and our pets. There seemed to be a neat science lab for kids but it was closed due to covid-19. A short drive and you are at the boardwalk and the ocean. Definitely a place I would like to visit again.

Definitely somewhere you want to bring water with you they do not have water jug filling fountains. the trails are true hiking trails along with one paved bicycle/walking trail. Has a wonderful Beach area up near the boat launch area where you have ocean water but with no Riptides and such not a lot of people out there so you can enjoy it a quiet family time if you bring family with you. Parking fee is $7 but absolutely worth it especially if you stay for more than an hour. Lots of parking spaces and friendly workers. There’s a trail center which has souvenirs like hoodies, zip ups, stickers, dog treats, hats but most importantly a map of the park which I recommend getting. Even after a rainy day, all the trails except the Cape Henry one (6 miles) were not muddy or slippery to walk/run on. Great location, large state park with about 200 sites. Its extremely popular and you should book months in advance for a holiday. I booked in August for Memorial Day. A quick 5 minute walk from our camp site to the beach. The beach is dog-friendly and folks did a great job with their pets. It wasnt a five star visit for us as we had to find someone to come and mow our site. While its a large park, it was also a holiday weekend and seems like that should have been taken care of in advance. Based on the height, it hadnt been mowed in a few weeks. Other than that, no complaints. The camp host near our site was extremely friendly. The bath houses while older, were clean. Its right off of Shore Drive, so an easy drive to a few local restaurants and grocery stores. Its close to a couple of local breweries as well. We look forward to a return trip next year.
