Gem of a little museum! Exquisite collection of native American textiles. A small collection of historical cartography of the southwestern US. Staff was generous with their time, friendly and knowledgeable. Had the whole museum to ourselves on a Friday morning. Plenty of places to sit and absorb the artwork.
Excellent collection of Navajo blankets & rugs from 1800-2000+. American paintings of Sonoran Desert by well-known masters. Some baskets, some Spanish-Catholic religious items, some cowboy gear, some Spanish Territorial furniture, some pop culture items related to Tucson, 2 viewing rooms with films about contemporary cultural issues, and a section of contemporary SW paintings. Most rooms are spacious and offer comfortable chairs. Lighting and accompanying written materials are good. Parking is ample. Gift shop is tiny. Senior citizens pay $8 admission.
This is a great museum. Its very informative and easy going. I love the people there, they really know theyre stuff. The gift shop is awesome, I got so many gifts from local artists
Like stepping back in time. So well done with more than 400 movies, TV and commercials. Love going and being immersed in Western movie history.
Very nice exhibits. No wheelchairs, but they do have good places to sit in each room.
Definitely recommend. A lot of interesting historic info. Starting with Native Americans and ending with movie industry using Arizonas amazing nature and views.
The desert art museum is probly to lesser known of all the art museums in Tucson. Mainly because of its location on the East Side. But you need to go to it. It is the most unique and diverse in a town.
Attentive, helpful, and sweet staff!
I really enjoyed the museum. They had beautiful examples of Native American tapestries, blankets, serapes and more. The history that came with the exhibit made this a very memorable experience. I would highly recommend the walk through.
Great place to take your significant other after brunch and kill about two hours. If you need an alibi.
I really enjoyed the museum. Lots of great information and pictures.
Beautiful exhibits, friendly staff, good size to see in everything in detail in 2-3 hours.
Love the ramp for my wheel chair. Finest museum in arizona!
This museum is off the beaten path, and is different from many you will visit. It is about two years young and thus still adding to its displays, which include a large representation of Navajo and other Native American weaving dating from the mid to late 1800s. As a researcher and reporter for SeniorCitizenLocalWeb I visited the museum in June of 2015, and found that the personal there were friendly, and knowledgeable. The museum in addition to the Native America aspect also has a section on advertising during the World War Two period, some Andy Warhol items, and a few ad pieces that would shock many today, but were accepted in the past. There is a small display of womens history that includes clothing, make-up items, and a wall with pictures and write-ups of first women, no not the presidents wives, but women who made history as being the first to do this or that.. very unique and interesting..Off to one corner of the museum is a sales floor where you can purchase artworks and other items. The only objection was that no photography is allowed, which this author feels is a mistake; when people take pictures, they show the pictures to others, and thus promote the others to come and see for themselves first hand the beauty of the displays. By refusing to allow photos, the excuse is copyright protection, it limits the audience that may have seen the displays or have interest in visiting.Location, Tucson, Arizona, Tucson Desert Art Museum, Gaslight Square Shopping Center, Tucson, AZ 85715 GPS 32.249931, -110.842018... There is a very large parking lot, and in the rear of the complex are some covered parking spaces. On Sundays there may be flee-market tents set up, and if you are hungry after the museum visit, there is a decent and reasonably priced Mexican Restaurant in the complex..
Nice museum...not large. We enjoyed our visit.
Had a terrific visit to the Tucson Desert Art Museum. Beautiful artwork, rugs, Native American history, and Hollywood history displayed beautifully and eith great descriptions. They have an extensive gift shop with a range of items as well. #MilitaryDiscounts #tusconmuseum #gemsoftucson
Decent collection including some exquisite pottery. and one very confused and ill mannered young male staffer.
The art is amazing. The facility is not handicapped accessible.
This is another perfect small Tucson museum. Boy, am I pleased by the changes in Tucson since I last visited. They had native American blankets and everything else you could expect in a Southwestern museum. The quality of the works was high, in my opinion, and the special exhibits were interesting. I especially enjoyed the special exhibit on the history of movues filned around Tucson. I learned a lot. I also liked the gift shop very much. I found a perfect gift for my sister-in-law, and there were two paintings I wanted, but could not quite afford. Oh, well.
Great small museum! Loved the display of textiles and modern southwestern art. Highly recommend a visit.
Informed and friendly staff. Excellent exhibits.
Not worth the $10 admission
The art, architecture and furniture are simply beautiful here.
Superb exhibit of Southwestern Art. A little off the beaten path but well worth the time. Bravo Tucson!!
Great exhibits. Both permanent and temporary
Disappointingly limited exhibits.
