This fun and easy to get to town from Austin has a really cool train heritage museum where you can see historic cars and learn the history of trains in Texas. It was a long stop on our way to Dallas but I would highly recommend a visit.

An interesting look at railroad history. Several historical pieces of equipment that you can touch. Train layouts for all ages. An excellent view of the BNSF engine terminal. Also a small but nice gift shop. Currently they have a Vietnam War exhibit, Little Joe y La Familia room, and Scott & White display. Definetly worth a stop.

Good time especially for younger kids. Not so big as to overwhelm you and not so small as to disappoint. It was just right for us. The staff was engaging and very pleasant and the price was great. We particularly enjoyed being able to see the engineers station in the steam engine. The only downside was the trains interior could use some revitalization. But I know its a work in progress and they are constantly improving upon what is a great way to spend a few hours. It was money well spent and I will gladly return with my family.

It was nice. Had a brief stop o n my way to ft. Worth. Had a few minutes to check out the place before taking off again. Tried to browse the gift shop but the nice lady at the desk kept chatting me up wouldnt leave me alone to look at all the merchandise or maybe buy something. Finally had to high tail it out of there for fear of missing the train. Staff should leave people alone as their time is brief and have little time for chit chat.

I adore the Amtrak workers they are polite and thoughtful and very willing to help. Every time I stop there which is often. But the environment outside is CRAZY!! The are people talking to themselves, asking for money, and harassing you when you walk by. I am very uncomfortable there when I have to wait the 2-3 hours fit my connecting train. The security tries to be on top of things but they cant be everywhere. I feel very nervous when my daughter is with me but thankfully the Amtrak workers allow me to leave our baggage in baggage claim so we can leave the depot until the train arrives. There are MANY restaurants to go to and the gardens are nearby. I just recently discovered this on my last trip and I will be doing this from now on. They really need more security there and to kick people off the property that do not belong. Thank you a TON to Amtrak customer service. I love traveling with them.

A railroad museum that is modest in scope, but what it does, it does very well. The staff was notably friendly, which is always nice. The building itself, a former train depot, appears to be in great condition. I learned a lot of Central Texas history by studying the exhibits. As for actual railroad engines and cars, there was one caboose you could go in, which kids always enjoy (as do I). The once-mighty steam engine has seen better days, but at least they are keeping paint on it. The museum is easily worth the $4 admission.A flyer of we were given at Mother Neff State Park made it sound like a model railroad layout is part of the museum, but that is not true. It was in an adjacent building, but was closed.

Cute little museum. Only four dollar admission. Inside an actual old train station. Several old locomotives and cabooses outside to look at. Steam engine with tender and passenger cars as well. They should really think about starting a campaign for donations to restore the steam engine though. It is in pretty bad shape. Still neat to see.

Awesome, small-town railroad museum. The steam engine is very impressive and open for visitors to climb up into. Kids can even ring the bell! The other cars arent open, but can be walked around and climbed onto. The Whistle Stop Playground is at the end of the parking lot and a nice place for kids to stretch their legs. The railyard across the tracks is busy for people who like to watch working trains.

This was an interesting museum with a very small amount of things to look at. However they did have trains that you can climb on outside. The trouble is most of them are rusting out. Not a bad destination for young kids but plan on only spending about an hour there. On the up side the whistle stop park is a nice playground to run the kids out of energy before you take him to the museum. Its right next door.
