Since my exposure to the Springfield Art Museum was for a presentation in the auditorium, I only casually noticed some interesting rooms containing expressions of various artistic imaginations. It was a quick glance that will certainly be extended to greater exploration in the near future.
The museum is nice but has a lot of the same artwork most of the time. We wish they had more competition art displays. We would participate in the competitions if they had them. It seems all the competition art displays are watercolor.
Harrassed four times during my time there today and told to step away from art when we where literally no where near it! We where looking at framing tools for crying out loud! Ive always enjoyed this place but after today I doubt Ill be back. Im angry enough to file an official complaint if any one cares.
Its a nice and relaxing walk through. Although some of the exhibits were closed.
Love that Springfield has its own art musuem. Love going to it on a quiet afternoon to check out the new exhibits and artwork. One of my favorite places in town! #art #modernart #culture
Small museum with eclectic mix of art. Nice way to spend an afternoon.
I absolutely love it the art they display is beautiful and amazeing Id recomend this museum to anyone
Good place for a quick walk-through. Some things cycle out every few months while other rooms are more permanent. Great free way to kill a couple hours.
I took my son here for the pre-K open sessions, be had a blast, socializing, making different forms of art, we had a good time :)
A quiet and cool walk through many forms of art that vary in medium and style. Colorful, educational, and beautifully thought provoking.
Greatest place to do Shakespeare in the Park
A good museum with 4 galleries (2 permanent collections, one about ONeill and one in mounting stage) mostly of paintings for a small city. Free admission.
Amazing amount of art covering all meduims... wow. Lots of work goes into this place
Nice enough for a city museum running on donations! It was a little too warm for me.
I very much enjoy going to the museum, and while its not the biggest or historic, they have had some wonderful shows lately.most recently the Rose ONeil retrospective.
Been going here since a child. Took art classes here in my youth. Grew up down the street. Nostalgia will always be biased.
Museum seems out of place at National. Springfield needs a fresher museum of Art near the vibrant Park Central or Commercial Street regions.
Different time periods and mediums are well expressed in this museum.
Rotating exhibits, free!, nice collection.
We took an afternoon stroll through and there are some great art pieces in there. Some educational areas, not your typical art museum.
I love going see all the art specially different events.
String hallway was so good
Great place to stop if you’re in Springfield and enjoy art! I loved the modern art exhibition when I visited. I was disappointed in how small it was- hopefully it will grow. Beautiful building and awesome sculptures outside!
Small museum with beautiful art, I went because I had to have a picture of myself in front of a work of art for an assignment. It was hard to enjoy when constantly being followed around, I almost felt like I was being herded around. Kinda hard to navigate, I wish they would give a paper with a list of exhibits or little map so I didn’t feel like I missed half the art when I left. Also they should get more fences around the art pieces, it was hard to stay the recommended length away some of the time.Edit: Also it seemed like they were having some sort of class in one of the exhibit rooms and it felt like I would intrude if I went in and viewed the art.
They have 2 amazing shows right now. 1 about women in South Africa who have fought to stay alive and created some amazing art with bead work! The second is a local artist who took pictures of the homeless in the SPFD area and wrote down their stories. The art is powerful, but to have the stories go with them blows you away. These shows will leave someday, but the SAM always does a great job of being relevant and true to art.
Amazing displays, wonderfully well cleaned facility. Events there are always one of a kind. They often have musicals inside or summer plays outside. Not the typical stuffy environment pictured when thinking about art exhibits, instead it is a colorful and inviting atmosphere.
A wonderful place to take the family.
I heart, heart, heart the Springfield Art Museum for many reasons. For one, its cozied up next door to Phelps Grove Park and is a mainstay for the Phelps Grove neighborhood in general. Team Phelps! For two, the building is a modern, airy beauty on the outside and doesnt look like it could possibly contain the numerous halls on the inside.Off the top of my head, I think I can count six or seven different exhibit halls/rooms, not counting a courtyard stuffed with art installations, a monstrous auditorium, a quaint gift shop, and a hall of classrooms. The art exhibits themselves range from local artists to historical portraits to modern art. Much of the seating matches its respective wing.
Great comic collection
The beadwork exhibit is very intriguing an amazing how these women spend several months to a year working on them. This is there life! And then the exhibit with pictures and stories of the homeless in Springfield is very drawing. A must-see and read. The entire exhibit opens Saturday they said.
Ive lived in the area for almost 20 years, and have always wanted to stop by the museum. I was finally able to check it out with my daughter. I was worried that shed be bored but she really loved everything that the museum had to offer. We were impressed by all the artwork, pottery classes offered, and the kids play/design area. The best part is that it was all free. Well definitely make more trips to the museum in the near future!
Beautiful art and statue installations. The entry way has a gorgeous colorful glass installation. The hallway to the water color exhibit has a beautiful rainbow string installation. The museum is free and has art from other countries, older portrait art, and contemporary water colors. The floor was not properly marked to warn you how close was too close to set off the alarm. And so it can happen to you which leads to anxiety about remaining direcrly in the center of the room. I dont know if the statues have the same berth. My daughter had a panic attack about setting off the alarms. So that kind of ruined it for me. But it was a lovely museum.... Better if the floor was marked in anyway...
Chihuly in the front, party in the back!
I went to see Randy Bacons photo of the homeless and read the interviews posted next to the pictures. It was an amazing exhibit
It was really great. My granddaughter and i enjoyed it . We will get back to visit and see what we didnt see today. Thank-you. I was most impressed with the large beautiful overhead colorful light? Or object?
A place to go for a peaceful day of art viewing, free to enter, a fun afternoon activity.
About half the gallery space is for rotating exhibits, so there is something new to see every few months. Exhibits are very well curated. The recent spring flower show was delightful.
For a city the relatively small size of Springfield, MO to have such a top quality art museum....is mind blowing. A truly well curated and nice collection of art awaits.
I preform here a lot. It has super cool art.
My 14 year old granddaughter and I have been here many times over the years since she was a very small child. We love the Museum. Staff is very courteous and informed. Great to stroll around and admire the pieces at ones own leisure. A wonderful asset for Springfield.
The artwork was beautiful. However the security guards need to be retrained! I brought my mentally disabled uncle there. He had never been there and I want him to be able to go and enjoy the artwork like anyone. He has a mind mentality of about a 7 year old. He understands yes, no and dont do that. However it takes him a couple times to know what he can and cant do. He wasnt touching anything but he got to close to the artwork, so the guard came and talked to us. He was very rude and had no understanding that my uncle is challenged. The guard followed us around the whole place like we were going to steal something. So frustrating and believe the guards really need to be trained to deal with people better! I also think the front desk could have been more helpful with guiding us in a better direction also. A little training could go really far. I will be taking him back but to the kids area first, then throughout the museum.
Really enjoyed our time at the Museum. A lot of various exhibits. I enjoyed reading the history of the pieces, and thought that was a great addition to the art. The kids really seemed to enjoy it as well. I will definitely be making a trip back when I have a day that I can spend more time.
Friendly, quite and interesting. I loved it.
Quiet and very enjoyable. Best place for a get to know you date.
There’s always something new at the art museum! I love that it’s free as well. I just wish there was more space so that we could get even more art in.
I love the Springfield Art Museum. It is a wonderful resource in our community. The staff is always friendly and professional. The atmosphere is clean, elegant, and inviting. The curator is doing an excellent job of creating thought provoking exhibits and changing exhibits on a regular basis. They also offer fun classes. My sister takes jewelry classes and Im taking a painting class. I am a teacher and the education department always welcomes us and comes up with ideas to connect current exhibits to our learning. I am really proud of the Springfield Art Museum. Visit . Its worth your time.
I am a teacher who visited the art museum for a class field trip for art. Had a guided tour with Barrett and Maddie (I believed thats the spelling of each). Both were absolutely delightful and interactive with the students, eliciting discussion from even the reluctant viewer. This was my 3rd time visiting and adoredand admired the artwork present. Do yourself a favor and visit this free, spectacular establishment and remind yourself what it means to be human.
Great exhibits! I was genuinely entertained and informed by the art work and explanation of each of the peices. It is all free as well.
Great place to be involved in the community and enjoy art that sheds light locally and globally. The exhibits change and there’s plenty of events to learn about as well. The place is bigger than it looks from the outside! Worth coming in from time to time.
Beautiful as always so much variety
We were there for the Sweet Monsters Rose Oneill inspired event. It was fun to rub elbows with fellow art patrons in costume!
I took my teenage son for first time and we both really loved it
Their shows are great. Make sure you check their info to see whats going on
Watercolor USA was fantastic again this year! One of my favorite events of the year! Congratulations Nick Nelson Art Museum director on your Phoenix award from the Springfield Regional Arts Council for bringing New Life to an existing organization with record-breaking attendance and a Visionary plan for the Museums future!
Great local art museum. Love it and its free.
OMG OMG OMG FREEEEEEEEE. SERIOUSLY FREEEE MUSEUM. Not only that but they have other events that happen there besides just looking at the free art. Im told they change their art about every few months. This month there is a show casing an artist did of homeless people and their stories. It brought me to tears. I encourage you to check it out. Also dont forget to look up...I wont spoil it but you dont be disappointed. There is also a fun searching game you can find the paper to when you first enter the museum.
Its a really great little art museum. They have permanent pieces and temporary exhibits. There is a beautiful courtyard in the center, and they have a small kids area with hands on activities and a reading nook. There is also an auditorium that frequently has local theater groups, choirs and orchestras play.
I am both into and not into art. I love symbolic art and I like to look for small details in choice, I read the painting like a poem. There is some interesting art here, I like the Asian section. Then English and American art from the 1800s was also quite enjoyable, although that style isnt hardly symbolic by nature. My only issue is that there is hardly any variety, and some of the art frankly makes me feel like I am far better at painting that I really am. (I am completely trash of painting and drawing.) Granted, I am sure that most of their art is donated, but, I would say that you should only go here if you really want to, you wont be blown out of the water, but maybe youll enjoy the peace and quiet which comes in the form of being in a large facility which is draining taxpayer dollars.
Strange mix of great art and why is this here
The art museum had amazing pieces wish there was more gallarys
Loved it! Exhibit of homeless in springfield was enlightening
A wonderful place to view creative works.
Giving one star because I was impressed that there was the caliber of art for such a small area. However I wont be returning. My girlfriend is a huge art lover, I am not but I love her and wanted to surprise her. When we entered we were very quiet and polite as usual, we strolled around and I got to learn all the little tidbits of info she knew about art. But noticed we wre being followed. Once we rounded an exit of one exhibit a man with a radio approached from around a corner and told us in an aggressive manner that we werent allowed to be within 12 of the art, which we werent ever. We told him okay and casually strolled on. We still were followed and again never got close to the art and again were approached in an aggressive manner and at this point it was a struggle to not become upset but because of my girlfriend I didnt. The director of the place I believe either took notice of how frustrated I was becoming or something, because he came over and made sure to chat about some of the cool art and calm the situation down. Overall we felt very judged, I guess because of our age or looks.
The exhibits are spectacular and the atmosphere in the place is nice.
Wonderful exhibits. Strongly recommend.
Nick, the director at the Art Museum, blows me away with how much collaboration he has instigated this year. I have watched the Art Museum grow over the years and look forward to how it will continue. We at 1 Million Cups SGF really appreciate the museum letting us have a home there!
Beautiful art! The current exhibit is a must see!
I did my first Open studio session with my daughter this week and she had an absolute blast! What a cool, free set up for kids! Ive always loved the art museum here in Springfield, but am just getting my toddler involved and the teachers and leaders of the kids art programs are so sweet and patient with the kids
I have to be honest, I love art. So maybe Im a little biased. The curve of the sculptures. The color in the paintings. The feel of the cold metal and glass displays. I can get lost in the smell of just art. I find myself thinking about art as I try and fall asleep at night, and again when I first wake up in the morning. I would take a bullet for each and every exhibit in this museum.
I love this place! Having it be free to take a tour of is really nice, and I love the classes that are held there! They are a little pricey, but the classes are much cheaper than what Ive found looking around at other places.
Had a great time watching a concert in the auditorium. I did not get a chance to view the exhibits, but they look intriguing. I will be back
Nice art museum with exhibits that change frequently. I like that it is free and the people are always nice.
Nice visit with the homeschool group.
A nice place that is free to the public. It has multiple rooms with a permanent collection and special art showings. Lectures and other art related activities happen here as well. I would recommend this activity for anyone. Handicap accessible and other benches to rest on during your visit. Restrooms are also available.
Really neat to see. Im not an artist but was quit impressed by some of the artists work.
Always interesting pieces to look at and staff is polite and helpful. Love this place and different art exhibits. Love taking my granddaughter whom always complains until she sees the art then shes inspired to be creative.
We had a great time here. We loved the variety of exhibits. The kids were excited to play in the family area where they could become a work of art, build a house, make art, and design a museum. I want to come back another time when I can sit and enjoy the art more either alone or with older children.
Good. Small. Free. They wont let you walk around with your coffee.
Friendly staff. Great art! Clean spacious, facility!
I absolutely loved this place! my fiance and our daughter (2years old) went and it was wonderful! it was free too, so that made it even better. they had many beautiful pieces, plus, they even had a play area for my daughter. she didnt want to leave! lol my advice is, if you have children, take them to the play area last. also, they have a family bathroom!
First time at the art museum! What a lovely place. Definitely inspired me to continue working and growing as an artist myself.
This place is not bad but when you are used to St. Louis Art Museum and Crystal Bridges, a C is the best you get.
Attended for a show and was made aware of audio issues within the theater area, there was an active microphone but no way to but recorded audio into the in house sound system or it was faulty. Sadly this had not been the first year there have been issues like this at the event. Full support for the upgrade if this gets fixed.
Nice place to go for something to do. Sometimes the art is kinda crazy but I guess thats art.
This place has been completely transformed here lately. There is so much to see and do. The Rose ONeil exhibit was amazing, and Im loving the pop up shows like the floral design exhibit. The art museum is becoming an even greater asset to the community and Im so happy with everything they have been offering to the community!
Fun place to go its free
Great for a place to experience art for donations only instead of having to pay a fee
Staff was so friendly. Great way to spend a little free time.
I adore our formal Art Museum SGF. Its large enough to rotate continual shows, in addition to hosting a monthly guest Artist lecture. 5 stars.
I got in trouble for touching the fountain in the courtyard but I had a nice time
Very nice
They always have new exhibits coming and going over the seasons. Plus, they offer art classes- I took some when I first moved here 15 - 16 years ago!
I visit the museum several times a month and absolutely love the atmosphere and the art displayed; always something new to see and experience.
Over all the museum was good. They even had crafts. But the gift shop is a rip off. I got a Play-Doh set and it was rock hard. The reason I am complaining is because I dont want kids to be disappointed when they open the lid.
