This nature center is open.. good spot to educate your children and yourself. Can stop by and have lunch outside which has picnic tables under trees for shade.. outside are areas were live animals are kept in captivity..Such as several turtles, red tail hawk,, owl,, racoons,,and other animals.. inside the museum are live Snakes such as King snakes, rat snakes gopher snake & a rosey boa snakes.also Tarantulas.. display of various taxidermied animals displayed throughout the museum.Including a gift shop. The associates that work here have great attitudes and friendly..the bathrooms here are very well Maintained with tissues & soap for hygiene care.. the trails here are full of reptiles,,my advice were high laced boots cus theres Snakes around the whole nature center including rattle Snakes and other creatures that blend in with the terrains here throughout the trails . this nature center here @ Whittier Narrows is safe to visit even though homeless have been seen to gather in the trails...the El Monte Police pass through here on a regular basis which makes it more safe for visitors.. come check it out with the young ones,, Im sure theyll be surprised to see the live animals & reptiles kept in captivity..pack a lunch with some refreshments and snacks for kids and spend a day here and the Whittier Narrows Recreation Area which is located across the street from the Whittier Narrows Nature center..Enjoy and always be aware of your surroundings and be safe..

In November, I cant wait for the rain to bring this area back to life. The tall, dead plants indicate it once full of life. If you stop and listen, there are birds still hiding among the dead plants. In fact, they are still every where, along the river trails or the land trails. I came here to look for the Pin-tailed Whydah, which often found with the scally-breasted Munia, and the Orange-cheeked Waxbill. Instead, I found the red-whiskered Bulbuls, which is interesting. Parking is free. I feel safe because the police park in the parking lot. Compare to the parks we had been, the amount of shades here is limited. If you walk further into the so called Whittier Narrows Nature Area, its also beautiful and wild but there are homeless camps scattered. So, bring a friend or stay close or with in the nature center.

This place is always so calm and cool. There us a lot of shade here compared to parks where the main feature is grass that is well kept. The main feature of this area is the natural state of many plants and animals. There are more clearly manmade trails now, but its still not just a lawn on either side of it.

Ok... I dont know what I can say that would do this place any justice... I take my kids once or twice a month and theyre really into it... The main building has some live king snakes and a river boa constrictor in aquariums, turtles, tarantulas, and a lizard and a dessert toad... also in aquariums...

Interesting spot. I stopped for a little birding and to meet a friend. Nice little museum and gift shop, a few live tortoises, a couple of racoons, and a hawk on display. Trail system is a little odd, and much of it is under crackling high-electricity lines. Good birding potential though. Glad I stopped in.

I love to walk in wild areas where nature demonstrates the connection between the human populations (urban life) and wild natural areas. We can learn and understand how the urban communities contribute both good and bad to our earth, by the changing Heath of the wild. Check out how the trees look within the WNNA...THAT is how we are REALLY impacting the only planet we can live on.
