During the Cold War era, the U.S. built Nike missile sites to protect cities from Soviet bombers. A ring of Nike sites were strategically built around the most important cities, with Los Angeles having a total of 16. They were active from the 1950’s to the 1970’s with radar searching the sky for enemy airplanes. New military technology made the Nike missiles obsolete.
I love this Park. As a kid we use to sneak in and go to the missile site down below. I will never forget that
It was ok but they should not charge people that are over weight that mean they cant get in the rides
Its just a dump for the county now
I just went here today and pretty much everything is torn down . They still have the area where the missiles were stored but you cant get down into it. All access is welded with big steel plates on top. Plus the amount of spiders down there has to be horrific
Its still there, but its being torn down little by little. There is a seismic station on the site. The missile doors are welded shut. All the access routes down into the underground magazines where the missiles were stored are either welded shut or filled in with rubble. Still, a cool place to visit and learn a little bit of history.
They used to have missiles here. Now all the doors are welded shut. Located right next to legg lake.
We look we were station and reserve unit back in the 1980s
Big as park
There’s no way of getting in
Not really a missile site
