The size of this museum was more my pace... it mimics the feel of an art gallery but offers a wide variety of events after hours - including a recurring dance fitness series. Thought-provoking exhibits and a timeline that lets you discover hidden histories of WA and Central District. With an ambitious goal to be in brutally honest conversations with other monuments/museums focused on Black history, its legacy in the arts and social movements as they were experienced in different parts of the United States and abroad.
A small but very nice, informative Museum. A visit here is a great way to find out about the history of Black people in the Pacific Northwest. I was impressed by the inclusion of so many stories of Black life in the Northwest both by folks born here and by those who immigrated here. I was also impressed with the programming offered such as talks and workshops. This gem of a museum is definitely worth of visit.
What a nice building and 5 thumbs up for free parking. The outdoor space is massive perfect for spring summer weather. The building is big but the actual museum is quite small I thought itd be 2 stories. The museum had some interesting pieces and exhibits beautiful artwork just the museum portion was a little small. Still learned a lot. I hope it expands.
I loved this place, an interesting mix between historical and art museum with a focus on the Northwest & African Americans if you couldnt gather from the title. Its rather small, its great for a short day trip in a couple hours and you could read every plack. It was amazing to see how and when African Americans flocked to the Pacific Northwest.
Small, interesting, educational. Highly encourage folks to visit. Im from Alabama and grew up at the end of the civil rights movement. This highlights things that happened in Washington as part of the civil rights movement. Please stop in and support the NWAAM. I love this place.
Phenomenal! Was unsure of what the museum would have. It did not disappoint, but rather I was incredibly surprised and delighted I took the time to peruse the artwork displayed. Highly recommend for all ages and ethnicities
I was expecting more historical information. They devoted at least a third of the museum to local artist. I did enjoyed the exhibits they had, though.
I’ve been to this museum twice and enjoyed it both times. They have rotating exhibits and I always learn a lot when I go.
Got a pass through Seattle Public Library and happened to visit when a temporary exposition about Jimi Hendrix was on. Really interesting. The museum regularly has all sorts of events and activities. Theres also a pretty good gift shop.
Great location to host the Black Health Matters Forum
Its a beautiful place to visit and youll learn something new about our history. Actually youll learn a great deal coming here, the staff are very knowledgeable about the exhibits here. Glad theres a museum in the city that honors our culture. Thank you for such amazing tour!
Idyllic setting, warmed my heart. The Iconic Black History month exhibit by Hiawatha D was exquisite.
Soul of Seattle Event! The event was great! The waiting in the Rain was not next time invest in more tent coverage.
Me and my family loved the new exhibit of all the powerful black women that have come and gone before us even the ones that are still here today!!!
1floor of works important to the Pacific Northwest African American population. Well laid out. Gave me insight on issues I did not understand completely.
Outstanding museum! As a Seattle native, I was intrigued with the captured history. A learning opportunity for people of all ages.
There was a world-famous rockstar, and the cashier was pleasant to converse
Excellent exhibits! Wonderful that they allow groups to use various rooms for book talks and other special occasions!
Very interesting to trace the history of African Americans. Everyone must go see.
It was quite, a little small, and has a lot of reading inside. But a lot of information, culture, and history.
This is an AMAZING place to view and learn about our NW Black pioneers and our history! The Iconic Black Women collection by Hiawatha D. is an incredible must see!
Very good Museum! Beautiful artwork and history
Great space. Lots of great history. If you can go on a pretty day, you can also enjoy the adjoining park.
This place is amazing! Its huge and I actually wanted to learn about african history. The black panther exhibit was totally awesome. I didnt know that the WIC program was created by the Black Panthers or that they created a free medical clinic for the neighborhood, and that they originally were established to patrol African American neighborhoods to protect residents from acts of police brutality. I really took my time admiring the pieces of art and really trying to appreciate where the artist was coming from and their point of view. ***Deep sigh in*** Just an amazing place and amazing experience. I love the gift shop too! I admire how they are advertising the local artists in there, and I will be in there soon. my mugs and card will be inside the gift shop soon. excited! ***update*** I AM IN THE MUSEUM GIFTSHOP NOW. go get a mug or tote. #gosupport
Great and unique Afrocentric Music and Art Events.
What an amazing event and atmosphere!
I found out about the museum while researching online ....places to visit in Seattle. I was glad to see there were several historical places within the city that we could visit. If you are in Seattle plan a visit to the Northwest African American Museum. Informative, inspiring and motivational.
Small but full of interesting exhibitions and information. And right next to a beautiful park.
Loved the celebration of african american women!
First visit, didnt have enough time to explore in depth. Would definitely return for special events.
This place is stunning. Created in the old Colman school where I was a student many moons ago...they have done an excellent job with it while still maintaining the same character of the place. Beautiful vibrant colors [exhibits and gift shop]. Love the warm atmosphere. This place is a 10!
Wonderful history museum and Jimi Hendrix Park is just outside.
Great little museum. Important history.
Packs a powerful cultural punch for such a young museum. The NAAM staff honors its roots by consistently centering the LOCAL African American experience, in a predominantly white city and state. Kid- friendly and family-friendly, prioritizes reaching out to the surrounding community. They are increasing the frequency of their visual arts and literary arts events as well.
Inspiring, thought provoking, beautiful exhibits. A fantastic museum of learning and fun.
Please!!! Black people in Seattle AND visitors to the emerald city....SUPPORT this museum!!! Make it your business to salute OUR heritage and pay respect and honor to those who have paved a way for us.....esp the 8 HEROES from Central City that risked their lives to make this museum a reality. Go today....learn something and celebrate being African.
They have a lot of great exhibits here. great way to learn more about African American history
I went to a Grandparent event it was very well put together, thoughtful music in my era, and the presentations about grandparents, how important they are in our lives
Very nice local museum. We went to see the Jimi Hendrix exhibition, which was wonderful. The staff were extremely friendly. It was a great way to spend part of winter day. It was a real bargain too.
Lots of interesting pieces and the staff is super nice!
Fantastic art and i learned more about blacks in the northwest. Welcoming, pleasant people at reception. Love d it
Loved that we were able to meet a local artist!
Great museum. My daughter felt like she learned about important history and I loved Jimmy Hendrix exhibit. My daughter thought the museum was the best experience of the Seattle trip. Thank you!
There is a lot of history here that somehow hasnt made it to history books. A short vist can open your eyes to pieces of history that are quite interesting. Its very laid back and thought-provoking.
Theres a lot of great things in Seattle lot of great ethnicity youll find yourself with a lot of things to do in Seattle like the Jimi Hendrix Museum and a lot more home of Kurt Cobain which would be in Aberdeen but overall Seattle Washington is a great place.
I never tire of going to visit NWAAM and the adjoining Jimmy Hendrix Park.A must see for anyone living in or just visiting Seattle.
Very good museum. The artist was there with his message, We are all, American.
Its small by museum standards, you can see it all in about an hour. Parking is limited, but free. Some if the exhibits rotate so its worth another visit if you havent been in a few months. There is also a large presentation/meeting space where different community events are held. If youre going for one of those, take an Uber as parking fills up quick. The entrance is on the park (east) side.
The history that is displayed is awesome. Some displays are changed up every couple of months. You cant be the price of only $7. I love it and I have learned so much.
Wonderful museum. Exhibit of art is breathtaking and local history of African American life in the North west is very interesting.
I went here for the first time a few weeks ago, and it was incredible. The amount of history here is stunning.
Very interesting
Beautiful art in celebration of African American art and artists. Wonderful event space as well.
The current art exhibit is amazing
Awesome venue. Amazing staff
This and the Wing Luke are my two favorite museums in Seattle. Its always got exhibits that are interesting and important to me. They have a good rotation and plenty of events with good speakers. Of course they do an excellent job of highlighting African American voices. And its the most affordable of all the Seattle museums, I think admission is $4 and memberships are similar. Keep doing what youre doing NAAM!
Nice museum on black history and history of black people in pnw. Dont think theres any other of its kind. A must see and must support.
Nice little history afternoon
Gorgeous museum! Great experience!
Really enjoyed Tuskegee Airman exhibit
Small but with interesting exhibits and rotating special exhibits. Inexpensive, next to Jimi Hendrix Park and has a nice view of Ranier.
I liked that it was interactive with lots of information of the distant past and the not so distant past. the Jimi Hendrix exhibit was very good.
The recent Jimi Hendrix exhibit was terrific.
So rich in history and array of historic and contemporary subjects
Very nice museum that I did not know before. Definitely worth a visit. Very thought provoking. A hidden secret of Seattle.
The Jimmy Hendrix exhibit was dope. Cool to see where our childhood landmarks overlap.
Fascinating museum with insightful exhibits. Particularly good temporary exhibits. Also, Black Santa at Christmas!
Beautiful museum to visit to learn and see african american history in the NorthWest!
Underrated museum. They have some consistently good rotating exhibits in two rooms. There are also some exhibits that are always there. The staff is friendly and their gift shop doubles as a genealogy room where folks can research their ancestry.
Excellent place to see and learn about African American heritage
Loved the art as well as the other displays!
Junetenth event Epic!
Great exhibits and very informative.
I like this Place Because it tell the Story of Black History that they did not Teach you in School.
Need more educational information on our people.
This is a small museum in a large building, but if you think you know black history, or north west history, you better check this out because they have numerous unexpected details.
Wonderful history of NW African Americans.
This is a great venue! I love my experience here! Beautiful exhibit as well. This venue needs much better parking.
Conveniently located, nice surrounding area. Terrible parking! The spots are so small that a compact car barely fits in. Non of the spots are marked as compact, but if two SUVs (properly) park next to each other, someone guaranteed to not be able get out of their vehicle. I did not see a current exhibit but attended an event here.
It cool I guess I just wasnt amazed at anything they had to show except Hendrixs hat.
Great info on how African Americans ended up in the north west!
Small, but classy, informative, and very well done.
Beautiful building. The museum is always changing with interesting and engaging displays.
I recently visited and saw a fabulous exhibit that left me thinking about displacement. And also feeling like I had found a community, my community that is so oppressed. However, we are here, thriving more and more. I think we will one day take the Central District back.
Very incitefull if learning about African Americans coming to the nw is your thing plus jimi Hendrix experience...
Cool exhibits and friendly staff.
Black History Month NHL tour!
Great place to visit
A great little museum in a tucked away corner of Seattle. The Northwest African American Museum provides a glimpse into the history and culture of African Americans in the PNW.
I thought that they would have more exhibits... But the exhibits they do have, are nice.
Awesome museum highlighting Black History in the PNW!
A treasure trove of details, facts, and history. The depth and breadth of the history of Black people in Washington is just amazing.
Really enjoy myself! Next time visiting need to come back to read -listen to exhibits
Thank you for providing this opportunity to learn more about how the past has shaped the present. I appreciated hearing the stories spoken, seeing pictures in the timeline. I wonder if there is any way to recreate the smell of oppression?
