This building currently under restoration is known as the Betsy Frazee house also known as the former Terry Lou Zoo. The building was made famous in the battle of the Short Hills on June 26th 1777 ( named such because the Hills near the Frazee house and current Plainfield Country Club were shorter than the Watchung mountains not to be confused with the town of Short Hills) the British general Lord Cornwallis stoped to buy bread from Betsy Frazee. She she replied to his request that she would give bread out of fear not out of love and General Cornwallis replied that he would not accept bread out of fear and then as he walked away his troops stole everything off of her property including farm animals, picket fence, and her husbands carpentry tools since he was off at War. We know the story to be true because after the war Betsy Frazee puts in for reimbursement to the Continental Congress for replacement of all the items stolen on that day. ( as noted to this day in the Library of Congress] The Battle of the Short Hills Ended as a stalemate but was a very important turning point for the war. Because the Americans stopped the British artillery cannons at the Ashbrook swamp also in Scotch Plains. And thus prevented the cannons use at the front of future battles.
