Nice quiet museum. Well cared for by the old Mill foundation. This place is just beautiful. It really shows how wonderful things can happen when people come together to preserve the past.
Magical garden. Perfection.
California Historical Landmark No 302: The Old Mill, El Molino Viejo, was designed by Father José María Zalvidea and built of fired bricks and adobe about 1816 to serve Mission San Gabriel. Another grist mill was built in 1823 near the mission and the old mill was gradually abandoned - it passed from mission control in 1846. The property remained in private hands until 1903, when Henry E. Huntington bought the building and used it for a golf clubhouse. Later owners, Mr. and Mrs. James Brehm, had the mill restored in 1928 by Frederick Rupple. The Millstones: Originally located in the upper story of El Molino Viejo, these volcanic tufa millstones ground grain for the indian community of Mission San Gabriel. The stones were turned by water flowing from nearby canyons. When the mill fell into disuse, the stones disappeared. A century later they were found on the Huntington Library grounds by General George S. Patton, who, as a young boy had seen them used as blocks for mounting horses.
Its very pretty, but I would not recommend making a long trip specifically for it. Check it out if you are in the area. Its free.
An interesting historical place to visit.
Charming historical early CA mill connected with San Gabriel Mission. Venue for art shows, weddinga, special events. Locatwd in San Marino.
Historically interesting
Very nice historic site
A lovingly managed historic grist mill built in 1816 to support Mission San Gabriel, 2 miles to the southeast. The milling apparatus is no longer here, but the building houses a small, working model of the mill, historic documents and objects, and a changing collection of local art. The mill is surrounded by beautiful gardens. Open 1-4 Tuesday to Sunday.
Beautiful pictures, Great artists
The mill/house is in amazing shape, the gardens are lovely. What a joy.
An excellent venue for smaller, intimate events and get-togethers. So beautiful, and private. Just lovely.
Beautiful building surrounded by a quiet garden. Excellent to know a little bit about history and walk around.
Nice little garden tucked away in the middle of a subdivision.
Beautiful, peaceful little space. A hidden nugget of So Cal history.
Small museum, tucked away in a very beautiful neighborhood -parking is very difficult. The site is well kept and still in use. One room houses art from the California artist community. The grounds are beautiful.
A building from the old days, now used as an art gallery, surrounded by a small, exquisite garden. Local George Patton plays an unexpected part in a Mill anecdote.
Hidden gem tucked away in the middle of San Marino. Surprisingly large grounds full of native plants and succulents for such a modest museum. Open to the public most days from 1-4pm except for Mondays. Great place for a small outdoor wedding reception or ceremony outside of museum hours.
Went there for a field trip. Pretty small place but some interesting stuff there
An amazing out of the way garden, art gallery and museum. The perfect place for a picnic, reading a book or just going for a walk.
