Love this little theater! What a gem. Less than 2,000 seats so it feels more personal. You can see the stage easily and it feels like youre having an intimate chat with a friend. The pages were very helpful and everything was well organized and clean. My only complaint is the chairs are very small, very old and very hard. Plan accordingly, but dont let that stop you. Youll love it!
Great venue to see a show or talk. Even far back in the balcony, the sight lines are pretty great. Also, typically great programming. Downside: no theater bar & no ADA access to the upstairs.Fun fact: used to be the Nourse Theater, renamed for the woman who championed City Arts & Lectures!
Lovely older theater. Good views from most seats. Good acoustics. Handicap accessible w/ seating in orchestra section. Climate control could be better. Location near Civic center, BART/MUNI locations nearby.
Sit in a back seat. View was good given the distance. But the audio wasnt clear. Parking at the performance center garage was expensive as they charged a flat $20 for the event, which was only an hour for us. Itd be more reasonable to charge by time.
Got to see the San Francisco Gay Mens Chorus here for their Ring in the Holigays show, and it was a joy. The theater is large enough to accommodate a decent sized audience whole still feeling intimate, and the location is easy to reach by public transit. There are parking lots close by if youre coming in a big enough group to make it worthwhile, and there are a lot of options nearby for a meal before a show.As for @SFGMC they are amazing and well worth seeing. Family consensus is this will be the new holiday tradition to replace seeing the nutcracker.
Beautiful venue and good volunteers to help you get seated. We enjoyed seeing a show here.
Really nice theater, apparently was used as storage by The SF school district until the past few years. Be forewarned no refreshment/beer/wine sales (maybe because its leased from the school board?).
Lovely theatre. Great acoustics and decor. A beautiful courtyard and the auditorium drips with everything elegant! Do visit and enjoy a performance if you are able! ️
Beautiful theater restored by Sydney Goldstein for use by City Arts and Lectures. The speakers are always interesting. The only minus is that the stall doors in the unisex bathroom dont show if its occupied so you have to bend down and look under the door to find the empty ones.
The pluses: No line to get in.Ushers are good at directing traffic. The minuses: seats are small and hard. Balcony visibility is marginal.rows are too small to walk in/outridiculous bathroom linesVisibility suuuucks from the balcony. Will not attend an event here unless i get front row seats.
A nice little theater. Use the bathroom before you attend an event here though, theyre very limited
I enjoyed my first performance there last night. The SF Gay mens chorusA wonderful night.A must seeEnjoy
Beautiful theatre. Was invited to a performance there and really enjoyed the theatre and the show. Like many old theaters is SF great architectural details abound.
A great SF venue for speakers of all sorts, Ive enjoyed all 5+ shows Ive gone to!
We had great seats. Only complaint is only 4 stall, no urinals in mens roomNot enough for all those people.
Great location, beautiful if faded old building. No bar or refreshments except water in tiny paper cups.
Came to see Pete Davidson and the theater is quaint, clean and comfortable. Pete was alright also.
Nice historical theater in downtown SF. Parking is difficult, but its in a nice area, so walking a few blocks isnt a problem. Tons of restaurant options for pre- and post-show noshing.
Show was great! Tough parking but manageable!
Got to see Tegan and Sara here- love the venue!! Very intimate and classy vintage building!!
Neat, early 1900s vibe. Comfy seats,, good acoustics. :-)
Easy to enter friendly employees including security guys.
Worst theater, poor infrastrucrure. The two stars are for the staff that tried to remediate. Im 6 tall and couldnt fit on the chair without hurt my nees. If your are a produtor fone brinde your artist to this old junk
This is a great venue for events of all kinds. If youre upstairs, however, it helps to bring a seat cushion as the seats can be a little uncomfortable. Otherwise, good acoustics everywhere, even the very back of the theatre.
Second row, seat 77 for Ear Hustle. It was a truly amazing experience. Its the best theatre experience I ever had. The night was epic! I was serving row, I could feel the spit as they recalled great stories. After it was over, I looked up to the balcony to see a friend that had bragged about getting seats from his friend, Earlonne Woods. I guess it really is who you know that runs the theater.
No parking of its own, but parking nearby. Small and cozy, not very big
SFGMC always brings smiles, laughter and joy, especially during the holidays! Legendary theater, staff and performers.
Beautiful restored theater. Good acoustics.
Really lovely place, why not more programs there?
Great fun. Professionally executed.
Interesting experience to be required entrance at 5 for VIP when the show didnt start until 8. I know thats a weird complaint but it was honestly super inconvenient as we were unable to eat dinner before the show.
Saw Adam Schiff here. Great rooms. Every seat has a good view
A great venue for public presentations, the principal stage for City Arts and Lectures. A beautiful old school facility beautifully restored for this new life. Bathrooms are dated.
Nice and cozy hall for concerts. Would be nice if there was a bar or some other facilities there.
Nice atmosphere. comfortable seats.
Beautiful, comfortable venue for City Arts and Lectures series.
A gem of a theatre. They don’t make them like this anymore. Definitely Uber or Lyft to the Nourse and be ready to jump out and walk because the area of Hayes and Franklin is pretty much always busy.Visually almost every seat is good, but acoustically it can be a bit hard to hear. Great facilities. Cell phone reception is a challenge, so if you’re having trouble getting your Uber walk a block away, probably to Hayes and Octavia to get a ride.Other than those minor issues, it’s an amazing place.
Nice theater in Hayes Valley for all kinds of shows - comedy, talks, etc. Orchestra/Loge/Balcony seating. Bathroom capacity is somewhat limited. Multiple entrances (one direct to balcony) helps crowd control / flow. Lots of good bars and restaurants nearby in Hayes Valley for before and after the show!
Good seats and sound systems. You can see well from all over.
Beautiful Ornate ceilings and original architecture, yet few bathroom stalls, leading to long lines and it lacks needed railings to some seats in upper levels that is actually quite dangerous
Nice small venue, no beverages.
Saw the Bestie Boys here. Loved the show and it was a great venue.
Nice sized venue for seeing a performance, hearing speeches, or panelist conversations.
I sat in row b of orchestra and had a great experience. Plenty of leg room for me at 62
Great old style theater. There always excellent speakers here!
Great theater to see your favorite event. Rear balcony has wooden seats to be aware of. Good location to have a meal before or after the show at a variety of restaurants in walking distance.
The concert was great and the venue is nice. Its a smallish and somewhat intimate space which was great for such soulful music. The audio didnt seem mixed terribly well. It seemed a little flat at times and the musicians seemed to be gesturing/calling for various mics to be boosted at times.
Was easy to get seated
Beautiful old theater with wood chairs and excellent acoustics. Ive attended two City Arts and Lectures events and the moderators and speakers were both fantastic.
Easy views of the speakers and great acoustics. I enjoy attending City Arts and Lectures and recently attended graduation in the nicely renovated theater. It has a vintage feeling that enhances the experience!
I was attending a Bill Burr stand-up comedy show, everything was good/perfect. Even from the balcony you could hear everything, really satisfied.
Pretty, but pretty cold. Gorgeous, but they were too cheap to run the heat on a winter day. We froze. Wearing a parka rated -20F didnt help much. Loss of stars.
Very good theater venue overall. Good visibility and good acoustics. The layout is dated and not very mobility friendly.
Lovely building and near good pub should one need to escape.
Fun.. get there early so you dont have to sit in the back by the noisy kitchen /bar
Very cramped seating, restrooms are downstairs only, and no concessions. There was a small water dispenser with tiny cups, also downstairs.
Great old theater. The restroom situation is pretty awful. So if you can go before the show, go.
Very nice theatre...worth checking out a show here!
We saw a comedy show there and it was a lot of fun. Just like anything in a big city its cramped however, the venue is beautiful and you have a solid view to the stage regardless of seat.
Great performance by the SF Gay mens choir. Unfortunately the venue leaves a lot to be desired. It was an old high school from the 1930s (?) And they have very limited bathrooms both for men and women. Also the seats are super uncomfortable and cramped (if youre a taller person). The balcony also cuts off the front part of the stage so you miss anything going on in front. To sum up Choir was great, venue needs a massive overhaul.
Major points for a staff that was both diligent and pleasant. The floor seats are average sized but nice, though from what Ive read the loge and balcony seats are very small. The building itself feels historical and old, but not run down. I was impressed by the calendar of events and suspect Ill be back one of these days.
Bill Burr was awesome! But the theater sucks. The seats were narrow and i was seated next to the largest man im SF. If you are in the balcony the place gets hot
Hidden gem, didnt even know it was a theater.
Gets hot and stuffy during a packed show. Still a good theater with the staff, decor, and set up of things. Stones throw from Bart and stone good bars and restaurants
Nice building my nephew graduated
I have been here a handful of times. This location is great for local events that are going on. Its also conveniently located next to some nice restaurants. I recommend coming here for any event.
Good performance hall
Nice theater near civic center. Quick walk from the performing arts garage. Staff was super friendly and relaxed - from door to our seats took no time. Seats are a little small.
Ok. Bit warm inside.
Great seats, absolutely loved Paula Poundstone. Great to go to a different theatre.
Beautiful venue.
Kind of a hidden gem. I would never guessed the theatre was as classic and nice as it was from the exterior. Really enjoyed the venue as well as the show.
Very good acoustics and a pretty venue. The seats upstairs are very tight.
A nice place for an event!
Doesnt look much from the outside, but once you walk through the doors, you step into an intimate space that has been preserved and protected from another era. Perfect venue for lectures and small art/musical event.
Old beautiful building, with lots of history.
Cool place. Big enough for civic symphony. Cool symphony
Very nice theater
Nice theater, we sat in the mezzanine section in the very back and could see decently.
Great venue for a graduation.
Good Place Has A Lot Of Things To See No Comapline Tasty Foods Around Here Must Visit If In this area
Theatre is pretty big. Acoustics and stage lighting was good. I wish they had more restrooms though.
Amazing ambience!
SF gay mens chorus
Great theater, good acoustics, comfortable seating. Long lines for toilet facilities, ten minute walk from BART, good and drink not allowed or available.
Seats were impossibly narrow...zero legroom.
Great place to see a show. Just be sure to visit the restroom first as they are inconvenient from the balconies.
Nice place for a graduation.
Oozes SF character and charm.. always a treat
