Quick facts:Size: Very smallPrice: Free (donations)Est time in museum: 15 - 20 minutesRecommended for: Locals interested in San Diegos early historyBest Feature: None really.Small mission/museum. Much smaller than I thought it would be. It is on top of a hill so you get some decent views of the surrounding area, although there are large trees that obscure the views. The museum is primarily one main area, about the same size as a small chapel and a smaller room as you go up the mission tower. There is a small trail area next to the museum if you wanted to take a walk. Overall a peaceful location. When I visited there in the summer there wasnt anything on display in the main areas other than a few Indian artifacts in a glass display. The other displays were mainly text and some old pictures explaining the local indian culture in early San Diego. So it seems as though they do not have exhibits on display all year round in the main area. The mission itself didnt appear to be in the best condition as well.Would I recommend a visit? Probably not especially if you have to drive more than a few miles just to see it, but it is right next to Old Town, so if you have time at the end of your day, you can stop by for a quick look, but you wouldnt be missing much if you didnt.

Beautiful building. It looks like it is old, but it is only 95 years old, not 300 years old. Great views and a historic site. Great museum about a person fundamental to the European settlement of California.

Junípero Serra Museum is currently operating according to Summer hours and opened to public from Memorial Day till Labor Day Friday-Monday 10 am - 5 pm.As of now museum is undergoing renovation and its Main Hall and Tower are not available to visitors. During much anticipated renovation museum Visitors Center and Store are opened to public. On July 16th Junípero Serra Museum will be reopened for the 250th anniversary of the founding of contemporary San Diego, and the 90th anniversary of the dedication of the Museum. Original site of the first Mission and Presidio in Alta California is only one minute walk from the Serra museum building and museum employees are providing walking maps and directions. Grounds and views of canyons and hills are absolutely stunning and picture perfect. I will definitely return and post more photos after museum will be fully renovated.

Beautiful old building... Needs a little exterior maintenance but otherwise really cool. Small FREE museum, you can climb the tower see old pictures of what the valley looked like 100 years ago. Looks like it can be rented for events too. Lots of trails and open spaces to explore as well.

The exhibition is a little sparse, you cant always go up into the tower for the best view, and the ruins of the Presidio are little more than some statues and mounds of dirt. But the building has an interesting history and is set in a peaceful, beautiful park (minus the freeway noise)

The historic significance of this site is awe inspiring. As you come up the hill, take note of the statue of an Indian. Beneath this statue is the archaeological site of the who lived outside of Old Town San Diego. Dont just visit the building, walk the grounds. You will see so much more of the FEEL of San Diego. Beautiful vistas.

Was smaller and less kept up than I thought it would be. Still had some good artifacts there but they are in the middle of renovating the tower exhibits so I can see where it should be much improved in the future. There were some areas to walk around outside which was nice. Glad the entrance fee was by donation only though.

Peaceful, Relaxing,Scenic Views....has a tendency to attract junkies (found a few used syringes in the parking lot).. Old town is within walking distance. It has two hiking trails -one that goes behind the museum and one going towards Old Town. Also attracts nosey wannabe Park Ranger Beckys that cant mind their own business. So lock your car and keep your cameras close and ready to go live.

The museum, the park, everything is awesome! The museum is only open on weekends so try to make it then as it’s a great little learning experience for kids and adults. The grounds are clean and plenty of flowers blooming as of late! Bring a blanket and enjoy the afternoon on the grounds.

Always wondered what that place was at the top of the hill, now I know. Great hour or two excursion, walk around the grounds, check out the museum, sculptures are placed throughout the property and there are trails going all over. The downside is that it looks like quite a few tweakers hang out there as well.

Ka
Review №31

The museum is only open extremely limited hours, and the history presented has been severely whitewashed to erase the crimes committed against the natives and to glorify slavery and rape they experience as some sick process of improving their lives. The surrounding park land is wonderful and is great for hiking, but the mission itself is a monument to colonial white supremacy.

My wife and I visited this beautiful historic building last weekend. It sits atop Presidio Park and was built in 1925.It was donated to the city of San Diego in 1929 by the wealthy owner. The museum is named after a Spanish Roman Catholic priest who did mission work in the area in the 1700s.He must have done a lot of good deeds because he was later made a Saint by the Pope.Junipero Serra is known as the Apostle of California. What a wonderful history this building has.
