We were in San Diego for couple of days and visited most of the museums at Balboa Park, except the Spanish Village. It was unseasonably hot that day, so under different circumstances, it could have been much more pleasant. Walking from vendor shop to vendor was not enjoyable. The smoothies were great. The painted cement floor was nice. We even encountered a wandering woman from Argentina who sang to us. That was nice and not a panhandler. I had spotted something towards the entrance and wanted to buy it, but not walk around with it. Less than an hour in the middle of the afternoon we were prepared to leave, but the shop had closed early. No sale there. To be honest, there are similar objects for sale in Old Towne. I also prefer the atmosphere there. A number of places to dine. The Spanish Village wasnt enough to hold our interest. A small number of stores surrounding a huge plaza on a hot day was not fun and apparently a number of people felt the same. Maybe some other time when the weather is normal to San Diego.
I was looking for birthday gifts - nice, affordable, unique.Something local to help struggling community businesses.Plenty of great options here.I wound up buying a pendant and ring from two different shops for reasonable prices.
Great art center where you can see and buy at from local artisans. You can also learn to make art
Happy this place was open, even picked up Lucy Wang original, she has been displaying her art and painting there for 34 years
Amazing place. Its a small village with shops containing local artists work (and being sold by the actual artists). Everyone is super friendly and willing to tell more about their art.The village itself is also very cute and colourful. I would definitely recommend visiting if youre in Balboa park. Opening hours are 11AM - 4 PM. I got there too early but it was worth the wait.
Most people dont know this part of Balboa Park exists. It is well worth checking out. Lots of different types of art exhibits and art oriented shops.
Lovely artist collective and beautiful surrounding grinds with multiple museums and a variety of entertainment throughout. Wonderful park excursion for friends and family.
Great place to visit and inspire kids, teens and the whole family, and to find great art to decorate your home.
What a treat! So much to see and artists who are more than happy to chat about their work and there spot in this cool corner of the world.
What a wonderful way to showcase the various art people creat. I loved the bright atmosphere and the amazing talent.
We were completely amazed by this little area of art stores which is like hidden in Balboa Park. We initially just try to take our dog to the antique carousel and then followed the sign of the Spanish coffee shop. And then here it is a whole collection of various art studios. And a perfect place for photo taking. Most of the art products are reasonably priced but hand made. There is even a Chinese water color studio offering art classes.
Very beautiful.art center. The other stores inside are very eclectic.
Got there before it opened. It was quiet and really beautiful
We always find delightful items here at the Spanish village. The craftsmanship of the art is magnificent.
Love all the creativity on display here, both finished pieces and artists at work.
Cool place. Friendly people. Amazing art. Great deals to be had.
This place has an amazing variety of artists shops and neat things to do. Im a member of the gem and mineral society and I take classes here for cutting gem stones. This place is right next to the san Diego zoo and there is an old fashioned carousel.
Balboa park is a huge place to cover in a day and there are good chances you might miss the Spanish village art center. But for an art aficionado visiting San Diego its a must see. The pictures speak for themselves.
Pretty little courtyards and interesting working artists highlight this colorful part of the park.
Cool place with local artists, we purchased a blown glass pumpkin for a house warming gift.
Gorgeous place to go walk on a date or with your loved one.
Pretty cool place with a lot of Spanish architectural building being used by the local artisans. Artisans work and make their creations there. Seems like this place would be really nice at night time too.
A large variety of Art Studios to see and Artwork to buy. Classes also available.
Beautiful hand made items at reasonable prices. Shop now for Christmas and beat the crowds.
Super cool spot full of Artists of all crafts and trades. Walk around and see all there is to see. The artists are usually more then eager to discuss their creations. I just wish I had enough money to buy some of those paintings.
I love the beautiful handmade art. In a lot of shops you can even see the artists at work!! If you are strolling Balboa Park this place is a must see!
Cool art and craftsmen. Wonderful atmosphere.
One of my favorite places in San Diego. I visit this little art heaven at least twice a year
Quaint little village like area next to the San Diego zoo. Lots of shops and galleries of all kinds of art. Especially liked the glass blowing shop. Wish Id had time to wait for her to show how she makes her glass items, but it group was on a time schedule. Will definitely go back the next time Im in San Diego.
We come often. A great spot with art and artisans.
Amazing little nook, great photo ops! Would suggest for picnicing or window shopping. My toddler loved the open space and colors! Support local artists :)
COLORFUL and a fun walk around! Precious art and very out of the box pieces! Kids loved walking around, you cant get bored walking around this place.
One of the best places to visit in Balboa Park is the Spanish Village Art Center. Its a quaint and charming area with many studios and many artist within those studios. We have seen many incredible paintings, sculptures, wood working, glasswork, etc done all by San Diegos local artist. The area is full of vibrant colors that will make you feel happy. The shop artist and vendors have all been friendly and informative about thier artwork. Thus it s a great place to walk around since all the studios are cl in se together. Overall its a fun place to visit.
Cute arts village with lots of local art shops, a colorful square, and nice outdoor seating. Dog friendly
Gorgeous place! Restrooms & benches available. Usually a coffee cart on one end as well.
Super friendly artists and beautiful work! Great space to showcase different styles and crafts.
Coloured glass, paintings, sculptures, musical instruments, gems - if you are into aesthetics, this place is for you. There is decent value for money.
Beautiful artist colony with artist studios with terrific exhibits. Meet local artists and watch as they work and learn from their experiences.
Must visit when visiting Balboa Park. Super cool gifts directly from the artists.
Always sunny fun day type of place!
A vibrant art community with a variety of artistic talent.
Great place to see what local artists are doing.
If there is one thing in Balboa Park you shouldnt miss its definitely this! Browse the galleries and stalls, paintings, sculptures, jewellery, decorations, postcards, indoors, outdoors, its an explosion of colour! No entry fee. There is a small but delicious coffee stall as well. Definitely go for it!
This place is beautiful, I travel here several times a year as Balboa park has so much natural beauty from the botanic gardens, to beautiful architecture in the buildings, and a plethora of museums to get lost in. My son loves using the tiles at this location to tell us what colors he know. Highly recommend checking it out. The people here are extremely warming and friendly.
Colorful and a little kitschy but all in all a great place to come and browse through some local art. Prices on many of the pieces are reasonable if youre looking to purchase. The whole place is designed well so its worth a stroll if youre in the area.
Beautiful location to stroll, and sip in art.
Loved this art center, just wish i had more time!
This place is pretty cool. I hadnt partied much here.. just came to take pics and listen to awesome live jazz.. its hard to get here cause I work all the time and the festivities are usually over by the time I cam get there.
This place is in Balboa Park. There is this village were craft people make jewelry, pottery, paper, wood art. And they sale their work. You can buy one of a kind items made by master craftsmen and women.
Liked the colors splashed all around. From the colorful stepping stones to the hangings from the tree all scream of art. Quite different options. Jewellery show piece included.
I loved this place. Great place to get art when in SD. Got my a Christmas gift for daughter and wife here. Artsy stuff is reasonably priced too. Lots of variety here. Youll love it too.
Very different. I was in love. Beautiful art.
Love this magical place with the colorful stones and fun art shops everywhere. Wish there were more places like this in the world. Great place for some creative photography!
Very pleasant, colorful area for a stroll. Lots of interesting artisan shops - photography, painting, ceramics, etc. Most of it is pretty pricey. There is also an ice cream shop and a couple of other food stands.
Spanish Village is always a fun place to visit!
Great place to hang out, grab a coffee or yummy rose tea latte (try it!), enjoy the colorful tiles, and wander the different artists shops. I love bringing my daughter here to watch the glass blowers and listen to live music. Its such a fun way to spend your morning or afternoon. I highly recommend it!
Watching the artists at their craft, and being able to discuss their process with them was truly a draw. Bought myself quite a few gifts. Lots of choices, lovely to just stroll around in the warm San Diego sunshine.
Cool little village with lots of arts and crafts
Sculptures and art on display and for sale here. Really nice to walk through and admire all the creativity.
Such an inspiring place. The art, the buildings, the feeling ... Muy Bonita
This is a working artist colony, there are more than 100 active artists in dozens of studios. They create items in a variety of different mediums including glass, wood, painting, ceramics, weaving, jewelry making, metalwork, enamel and much more. The artists are there and you can ask questions and watch them work. Its a great learning experience for children and adults. Many offer classes.
Very pretty with a lot of art and artists work displayed, overall take the time to walk around and enjoy your surroundings
It was ok. We were there on a Monday so not every shop was open.
This artists village has been here for over 80 years now, stands out in uniqueness from all other art hubs/galleries in the city. The colorful and non-uniformed ground tiles and adobe-like/Mexican architecture is a contrast from the rest of the park full of sometimes overly ornate buildings. There is a good amount of places to sit and rest or people watch when not browsing the large number of artists shops. If you want something different than the usual Amazon, Wal-Mart or cookie cutter items for gifting then this is a great source.
Super festive and Alot of really cute shops !
Enjoy the artistry of local artists here. A lot of them. A lot of styles. A lot of mediums. You will love some, probably not all. But all interesting.
Lovely place!Artist can show their unique artwork
Great place!
I love looking at all the local artists work. Its so awesome! We went for the 10th annual Family Halloween Day! Lots of fun with free art activities and candy of course.
Dont buy San Diego souvenirs in ANY other place but this! 1. Quality is solid, 2. Process are on a high side but reasonable, 3. You support true local artists, not some sweetshop across the ocean
Fun little shops many with the artist working in the studio space inside.
The Spanish Village had its origins as an artist colony for the California Pacific International Exposition during the 1930s. It is now occupied by more than 200 artists who practice every sort of art from enamel painting to photography to gourd artistry. 37 working artist studios and galleries are free and accessible to the public every day of the week and many art classes are offered as well. Located in the middle of Balboa Park, the Spanish Village is an authentic and unique destination for art-lovers everywhere.
I LOVED this place!Everything is so colorfulThe tiles and houses are so colorful that beings joy just looking at them The shops belongs to artists in San Diego and everything is made by them There are chairs and tables if you like to sit down There is also a coffee shop and the coffee is really good Pets are allowed
A wide variety of art styles to see and buy!
Unique art pieces that are functional have been hand-crafted by talented local artists in their studios that are laid out like a little village. This place is an important part of Balboa Park. Shame I am not allowed to take pictures of the merchandise so here is the colorful village floor.
Neat little shopping center with great coffee!
Such a gem in San Diego. Forget souvenir shops. Youll find extraordinary pieces here at decent prices. Also nice to just stroll through and chat with local artists.
Fun and funky little area if Balboa Park right near the zoo. There are main little shops to explore with different types of artists. The courtyard area is beautiful with different colored painted pavers.
Very cool place to stop if you are a tourist or just plain love local art. Sculptures, glassware, pictures and paintings. We spent over an hour here just looking at everything.
I always visit this place whenever I go to Balboa Park. The colorful flooring catches my attention every time. Personally, I believe this is a great place for family bonding, or just to hang out in general. They also serve coffee shops, mini thrift shops, and beautiful paintings for people to purchase. I recommend this place for anyone whos visiting San Diego.
Its a creative art center, with its floor being colorful and pleasant to the eyes. Theres a lot of studios that each artists have, for you to buy their works from. You can visit their studios and there are food stand there.
You can tell why this place holds a certain appeal with Americans: it is, indeed, very much like a picture of a “European” Village. However, as a European, the atmosphere here feels a little pretentious and the surroundings... inauthentic. Feels to me as though you’re walking around a Disneyland version of a Spanish coastal Touristic district. Only stopped by here briefly but it didn’t quite capture my heart the way I had hoped after hearing about it. Still enjoyed seeing the local artwork and artists’ studios though, that’s always a pleasure
There are so many cool artists here and handmade jewellery and other sorts. Definitely visit this place to explore San Diegan culture!
Such a cool and inspiring place! Visit Andy at the glass blowing place. Shes great and the other two artists there do amazing textiles and unique jewelry.
Chill spot to have a pizza n beer!
Love this little art center next to Balboa Park. 38+ small studios with many representing several artists. Lots of treasures here and many working artists in their shops. Great gift finds and fun and very beautiful art pieces and jewelry. Worth spending a couple hours browsing.
Love it Magic place.
Absolutely wonderful! I recommend this place for everyone. This center contributes to our local understanding and appreciation of the arts and helps promote our culture. Please help support local artists!
The Art Center is a great location to view numerous types of craft work from silver smithing and glassblowing, to lapidary and leatherwork. One of the more exciting aspects of visiting, os getting to talk to the artisans as many are working right there in their own shops.
Beautiful and colorful village!
This is always a must go for visits back home. There is a wide variety of art, from jewelry, to paintings, to glass work. It makes me think of home and bring something home almost everytime.
Love this place. My favorite time of year is the Potters Guild Sale and Exhibition, which is performed twice a year in the Courtyard. A must go to event. One of my favorite things to do in the park.
Sculptures were amusing. The rest been there seen that. Glass blowers put on a good show
I like this place with all its colorful. Right away next to Balboa. There are a lot of art, a lot of variety. You can find a special gift for a best friend to a piece of art to decorate the house. Also jewelry, unique designs created by amazing artists. The prices are fear depends on what do you want to buy. On weekend there are artists painting live models, such a great show for free. Its a kind of experience walk around.
