REALLY, REALLY, REALLY awesome place to visit. Yes, it sounds cheesy, but this guys loves his art and is very passionate about it. He did all the art himself and is still making new ones at 90 something years old!He has a lot of great stories and he has been on several national television shows throughout the years. He has a video tape looping on a TV that shows his television appearances. There are also a lot of newspaper clippings in the museum talking about him.I wont lie to you and say it is something fancy - its actually in his detached garage on the back of the property, but it is still FUN and he is a great guy to talk to.He loves visiting with out of town visitors as well as SA natives.Call him before you go so he can make arrangements to open up. Hes not open all the time but will open up if you give him a couple of hours notice.
A real one of a kind experience! Theres something in there for everyone. not sure what to expect when you come into a residential neighborhood to see a toilet seat Museum. Bernies world famous theres newspaper clippings magazines and TV appearances throughout the museum. If it wasnt for the Texas heat you could spend hours in there and not see it all. Bernie himself has that Southern Charm and a great personality its amazing that he is 97 years old and he is still creating this art for the world to see. These photos definitely dont do this place justice there are what seems like thousands of art pieces.
Barney is an amazing sweet fun host. He makes your day entertaining and pleasant. The art work has history and stories. Barney made it manually interactive where you participate hands on! Great place to go before the zoo or the botanical garden. He was also featured on TV and by the way you will learn how to turn on the VHS :) Its free, and please donate at the end of your quest! I also had the luck to meet Robert D. Peterson an amazing artist who made Barneys painting below. Hurry on meet the King of the Commode! I can say this is an Authentic San Antonio, Texas little treasure museum.
A very interesting place to a little bit of everything and anything !!
The yard this is located in invites everyone with food trucks, live music, a bar with great service, and the entertainment of the toilet seat museum. You can take your time looking at Barney Smiths hundreds of toilet seats that he masterfully created with too many themes to even mention. Go see it! Brong your dog. All dogs on a leash are welcome.
Delightful man with a knack for gab and capturing moments in time on toilet seats. Thats right, mixed media on toilet seats! There are hundreds, each one catalogued, as well.I took my kids for a nice change of pace and to see the value of ones perception of art. Barney has made a lasting impact on many people. Likewise, his legacy will be a positive reminder of loving life to the fullest.RIP Barney.
Barney is great. Wonder treasure if s place and he is full of stories to go with each seat he has created.
Oh. My. God!! Barney!!! This man entertained us for hours!!! GO!! Sign in! Say hi! Donate!
This place is fantastic. Barney is an absolute joy and really enjoys sharing the stories behind his collection. Highly recommend a stop - being your camera and something for the donation jar.
Wonderful place full of history. Mr. Smith was extremely knowledgeable about all of his pieces they were all a work of art, I hope to come back soon!
There was one toilet seat in someones backyard and no signs so we just drove around the block and then went home! :-(
As of February 2019 The Museum is now closed! No more appointments. Barney shared his museum with San Antonio and the rest of the world for over 26 years! At age 97 he decided it was time to transition out of the museum business. Luckily Barneys Toilet Seat Art will live on in the near future at a roadside attraction in the Dallas area at the Truck Yard in The Colony. I dont have information on when the museum Phase II will open. Barney the artist will be staying in San Antonio.
Old dude has a ton of stories to tell about his seats. Fun place to spend an hour if you want to see a good road side attraction
There were so many different toilet seats I was not expecting so many or with such a variety of subject matter. Even my 3 year old enjoyed it. A warning: if you cant handle old people who could go on forever talking about their life dont go. With that being said Barney Smith was very nice and interesting and didnt actually talk our ears off but I could tell he would have if we had asked more questions. There was a story behind every toilet seat and lid.
It was an amazing experience, my husband and me are really thankful to the artist. I was much more impressed that I could have imagine!
So many seats. Barney Smith is incredibly nice and a great tour guide.
Barney is a super nice guy who has so many stories about the seats he makes. When we visited there were 1295 toilet seat pieces of art each carefully crafted. The museum is in his garage so make sure to call ahead to see if hes around to show you in. One of the coolest places Ive visited and would highly recommend to any traveller in the area.
I took my 11 year old grandson here and we both loved it. Barney is a great guy who loves to tell you about his toilet seats. He had fallen the night before we got there and we were there for a doctors visit. He didnt want us to leave. See it while Barney is still showing the toilet seats.
Going in I expected it to be super weird or something. But it is just an amazing place with so much to see and so much creativity. He makes seats from all of his travels and stuff. He is just an amazing guy in his 95 years and is really friendly and I would go there again and again if I lived in San Antonio. A great place and I really recommend people of all ages to come and see it!!
My wife, mother-in-law and I were in San Antonio taking my mother-in-law to the airport. Her flight was delayed and it was raining so we were on the hunt for fun indoor activities in San Antonio. After many failed searches we came across the Toilet Seat Museum. We all laughed thinking this is a bit strange, but gave the place a call anyway, since its by appointment only. When the gentleman answered the phone our first thought was that this was a scam (we hadnt thoroughly checked the legitimacy of the museum). The gentleman on the phone was elderly and explained that if we were coming soon he would prop the door open and then once inside he would shut it behind us due to the rain harming his toilet seats. We thought this sounded pretty out there and possibly the good start to a bad horror film. However, once we arrived and met Barney and stepped into his toilet seat museum we quickly discovered the amazing timeline of his life and US history all perfectly depicted on hundreds of toilet seats. Barney has a wonderful life story and great artifacts to prove it. Please visit his unique toilet seat museum. Thanks for a fun time,Tim
Great little museum in Barneys shed. Barney has spent the last few decades using toilet seats as his vehicle to create art that reflects San Antonio and the world at large. The exhibits are very interesting and Barney himself might even be more interesting!
This is my Grampas museum. He has put his heart and soul into the works of art that you will find here. Even though he may be slowing down a little at age 97, he can still tell you in detail about every single piece. This is a wonderful way to spend time and it is free to the public. Please call first so that he can open his doors for you.
Barney definitely has taken his hobby to the extreme and created an interesting and history filled museum. Every one of his thousands of toilet seats has a story and hell be happy to tell you all about them. Dont forget to call before you head there, and bring some cash for his donation jar!!
Mr. Barneys art is unique and beautiful, but more importantly it serves as an outlet for him to be able to share a profoundly powerful, uplifting perspective on life, love and loss. At age 95, he is a veteran in the category of losing loved ones- he mentioned how much he missed his wife, brother and daughter among others- and spoke of his eagerness and excitement to be freed of his body and meet them in eternity. In his own words, Barney has grown homesick in these final years of his life, and yet his infectious positivity and enthusiasm havent waned in the least bit. He is a miraculous, living testament to the power of optimism, faith, love, and kindness, and a towering beam of sunlight in a world shadowed by the sort of grumbling capriciousness which, if unchecked, is capable of distorting beauty and inducing delusions of victimhood.---BARNEY SMITH HELPS US REMEMBER THAT LIFE IS A GIFT---
Glad to hear that at 97 Mr Smith is still at it. We visited his museum about 4 years ago. Really worth a visit for those who are into unusual places.
Nice
What a hidden gem. Barney is an absolute delight. 97 years old and hes still sharp as a tac and a wonderful tour guide through this very unique museum.
This place is amazing its the crappiest place on earth
Great guy and amazingly interesting collection. Highly suggest.
So much more amazing than even the glowing reviews suggested! I highly recommend going to see Barney and his toilet seat museum!
Unique to say the least, a labor of love Im sure. Stop by And say hello to Barney
Barney is a great guy! My husband and I have been going to his museum for the past 5 years. Every time someone comes for a visit we take them to the museum to see all the wonderful art Barney has developed, there is always something new. You will be hard pressed to find such great history along with a very knowledgeable curator. Do yourself a favor, give Barney a call and go for a visit.JacqueSan Antonio, TX
Went here as part of a scavenger hunt and we amazed at all the toilet seats! Worth a visit if youre in the area
Unusual, fun place. Has 1,350 decorated toilet seats . Its in his garage. The best part is his historical narrative. Every seat has a history. Your is free. Parking along the street. Plan for 1 hour.
Absolutely fascinating. Nothing like you have ever seen, but you will fall in love with the artist. This is a museum you will not forget. Amazingly, you will be telling others about it.Not for little kids. Too many small items to touch. Best if viewed at a cool time of year. Plan on 2 hrs.
Unbelievable place to visit. You have to stop and see Barneys display of art. Great stories behind each piece. Reading previous reviews, you have to call first. I am so glad I came.
Such a humbling experience. The owner himself is enough of an attraction and his amazing collection and stories are truly inspiring. An amazing addition to a trip, free and educational as well. (Please visit around 7:30, when the heat is less intense)
Barney Smith is a very sweet 96 year old man who spent his life creating works of art on toilet seats and has them displayed in his garage. He is up to 1301 as of today. He has invited the public in to share his art. A must see.
Barney is awesome!! Just listening to his stories about the sets is worth the trip!
If I understand correctly, Barney Smith decorated some toilet seats at his home with memorabilia from his travels and over time it became an international sensation with folks sending Barney items and toilet seats they made from around the world. Quite an interesting collection.
This guy got spunk...a unique museum or garage with dozens of unusually decorated toilet seat covers. Make sure you cover yourself in mosquito repellant before you go.
Barney was Super friendly & opened up for only us two! There was so much to see, a really wonderful place; and dont forget to bring change for donations!
Barney was amazing! Such a good time listening to him and seeing all of his art.
Wow, what an interesting man with an interesting article from. Such a great time!
An absolute privilege to meet this gentleman- his museum is well worth a visit if you are in San Antonio. If you can donate anything he will put it on a toilet seat- I gave him some old odd earrings and hope he will use them in one of his creations. Hes a helluva character and I am honoured to have had a personal tour of his collection! Long live Barney!!! Long live the toilet seat museum!!!
I had an absolutley amazing time here. The tour is led by the artist himself (which suprised me) who seems to have found his calling.
Me and my husband stopped by to visit this museum. We have been to a lot of museums. In San Antonio and Austin area. But this is one we had never been to.Barney is so friendly and very talkative. Makes people feel welcome we took quite a bit of photos, we even took one with him.If you have never been here you should pay him a visit .
With about 1400 toilet seats to see, you really need a few hours here. Its best to call ahead.
Barneys a great guy come and see this while you can and be sure to make a donation
Amazing. A must-see attraction. Barney will not only give you a personal tour but will be able to tell you the entire history of each piece on request.I plan to visit whenever Im in town.
Barney is an incredible guy with so many stories. Loved his exhibition!
Fantastic place, well worth a visit. Bring Barney a license plate if your from out of town.
Loved our visit! Barney is the perfect host. Funny, gracious, full of stories!
Unique museum with a sharp mind 96 year old, as of late 2017, owner. So many toilet seats and each tells an event.
Unique place to visit. Definitely worth the trip!
Nice 92 year old man. Has over 1000 artistic seats and still making them. Its free and a fantastic way to spend some.
Toilet Art, love it or hate it. Mr Smith is a born entertainer himself! Call for reservations, while you still can.
Very unique place. Barney is a very interesting man
An excellent host will give you a tour and with Grace and care. Mr Smith is one on a million.
I love Barney so much. Intended to stop by for 20 min or so, ended up spending an hour and a half talking and helping him around the shop.
Amazing and talented man, Im surprised I never heard of him sooner.
Absolutely fascinating! What a unique way to honor memories and interests.
Barney is amazing and the toilet seats are very cool. Dont forget to sign the seat from your home state or country.
This was super interesting! I couldve spent hours in there talking to Barney. I called him and hed already closed down for the day, but told me to go ahead and come on and hed open up for my gf and I. He had 1,192 toilet seats in there and he knows every detail of every item in there ( who donated the items, where everything was and what each one says). He pulled out some vhs tapes and showed me the times hes been on tv. I spent maybe an hour in there and couldve stayed longer, but it was getting late. Seriously, he was one of the sweetest and interesting people Ive ever encountered. I kinda just want to be best friends and decorate toilet seats with him. Thank you, Barney. It was a true pleasure meeting you tonight. I hope to make it back to San Antonio soon to visit again. As we were leaving here told us not to wait too long to come back because he is 94 and you never know when his time will come (haha). Check it out, its free, just throw a couple bucks in his donation bucket (if you can) and hes happy with just that.
Barney is just full of information! He is delightful!
