Fun place with the family for a small hike & look at nature.
A short walk from my house. There are several ponds, I understand left-over from dredging by the Arden Sand & Gravel Co. The river is always cool (~70 F), coming from the bottom of Folsom Lake & Lake Natoma, but the ponds get warmer in summer to hold bluegill and bass, plus otters which eat them. Rattlesnakes are common, and the kingsnakes which hunt them.
23 beautiful miles of river flowing through the center of Sacramento on which you can raft, canoe and kayak; fishing for steelhead and salmon; picnic at several developed recreation sites; and bicycle and walk along the Jedediah Smith National Recreation Trail which follows the entire length of this National Wild and Scenic River. This protected section of the river, known officially as the Lower American National Wild & Scenic River, begins downstream of the Nimbus dam, flows through the American River Parkway, to the confluence with the Sacramento River.
Beautiful area.
